I'm going to give my two cent here. First of all, the name Relic Ruin wasn't a official name, fans has named it and been calling it for years. Second, some has say that the levels has bits of graphics other zones, the wacky workbench past secret room, the background of stardust speedway past, all revolving around the Greek ruin theme like Marble zone. The D.A. Garden music (the JP version), some say that it might have been for R2 music, possibly for a Past or Good Future as it sounded more peaceful. Hope this clears up

I'd guess the D.A. Garden's JP theme was the Present version, rather than the Past or Good Future version due to 1:33 into it sounding like it would probably be used in a Bad Future theme.

Rainbow Ruins zone. That's what i think it was. First, it fits the level naming scheme: someone clearly had a thing for alliteration, and this fits into that perfectly. Plus, it fits better with the concept art, with the rainbows all over the place. However, we have no clue as to what the letters used would be. So it's probably wrong.

R2 has been elusive for nearly the full 20 year history of sonic game research. Short of any of the original development staff directly coming forward and outlining any unused/cut content, I don't think we'll ever really learn anything more about it. Even in the earliest known prototype (510) doesn't even have anything, iirc. Beyond that one developer diary video that showed the rainbow waterfalls, and the handful of sprites that Taxman posted 4 or 5 years ago, there has literally been no other revelations about it. I've always figured it was cut pretty early.

6:11 So wait, you mean to tell me that the same game that contains the level "Wacky Workbench Zone" had quality standards for the level design? Furthermore, I'm expected to believe that "R2" didn't meet said standards? There are 2 possible explanations here: either this guy actually has no clue why the level was cut and just had to confabulate an answer out of thin air because he didn't feel that "I don't really know for sure" was an answer we'd settle for (he dodged a bullet if this is true; this fanbase has no chill and you know it), *or* R2 was secretly the worst sonic level to ever be created and the developers felt the need to return it to hell before they even got to the 512 prototype.

Sega hired artists to make a rendition of each zone in Sonic 1 for Sonic CD. Either Yuji Naka or Takashi Izuka said that they were unhappy with the design of Round 2 so they cut the Round. I believe it's a lie.
@STikER326
@STikER326 6 жыл бұрын
Matt EDG, WUT? Yuji Naka or Takashi Iizuka? Naka was working on Sonic 2 at the other side of the globe at the time, and Iizuka wasn't even around (his first Sonic work is Sonic 3's levels)

By quality standards, they probably meant things like the way the level looked and the music not fitting. The level design could've been the best ever, but the level itself wasn't really that great.

The best guess as to why it was cut is due to rushed development. This has been an issue with Sonic games since the very beginning. It's for this reason why Sonic 2 is missing its desert level, why Sonic 3 was cut into 2 games, why Sonic Adventure ended up scrapping the more ambitious stages for more streamlined ones and why Sonic 06 was released as a buggy mess.
@apollo4295
@apollo4295 6 жыл бұрын
I really like the "music" for the level, but I have a hard time believing it's real (which it probably isn't, as you mentioned). For one, the "Past" music for every level in CD, unlike the other Times, were sequenced music, like on the Genesis. The one played doesn't sound like it could be feasibly played as sequenced music. Plus, all of them have a very "USA soundtrack feel to it," and I doubt the need to make a track for a scrapped level would have even been necessary by the time work on the USA soundtrack began.

I think the Cut zone in CD was Dust Hill/Desert Dazzle (or at least had it's graphics). Those badniks do look like they'd exist in a desert zone. And that robotnik boss looks like it would drive along the sands. A desert zone with ruins sounds interesting. I'm guessing those Desert Dazzle screenshots once belonged to the Past of R2. Further evidence of this desert zone are extra areas on the DA Garden world map. And the background on Wacky Workbench Past (a canyon).

I freaked out when I heard you play "Take It" by Alex Lee at 4:54. That track's been on my playlist for over a decade and I always thought the way the voices are edited sounded a bit like Stardust Speedway. Could it be the Sonic CD soundtrack actually is related to these tracks?

Since all past tracks in the game use PCM samples instead of redbook audio, the supposed past version of Relic Ruins seems way too high quality when compared to the rest of the past tracks.

Those music tracks were actually used in a hack called _Sonic VR_ by MarkyJester, who compressed them to run on a Genesis. This was _way_ before 2016, so those tracks are definitely not “new discoveries.”

My idea for what the boss of R2 could of been You race eggman and eggman places the spikes that you jump over or it will hit you. Eggman does a little boot that shoots little fire from the eggbike's back (yes I'm calling it eggbike) dont touch the fire or you may get hit. If you run into eggman or eggman drives into you. You will get hit. He takes 8 hits to defeat. The back spring on eggmans back will push you back when trying to defeat him. Yeah I know my idea isnt really great and it sounds easy but the bosses in sonic CD arent good anyway

The r2 thing is actually going to a desert the same one that was cut from sonic 2 so the CD remake was a desert themed zone and Christian white head wanted to add in that missing zone but Sega didn't want them to and what you see in sonic mania is the cut desert stage from sonic 2 and cd
@GabePuratekuta

No, Desert Dazzle was entirely created by Christian Whitehead specifically to fill the R2 slot in the 2011 remake and was inspired by the scrapped Dusty Hill Zone from Sonic 2

Well, the past music is definitely take because the soundtrack for past zones were never CD quality tracks. They used the system's sound board. This is also why the Japanese and American versions share the past soundtrack of each zone as they are not actual tracks on a disk.
@Tornado1994
@Tornado1994 6 жыл бұрын
On top of that, the samples sound WAY too "Desperate Modem Early 90s Remix" to be authentic. Sonic CD's Japanese soundtrack is way too unique and Ubiquitous. Its pure Early 90s Japanese Clubhouse Music. That sounds like it has a Footprint from that time period.

Actually, the Jalex777 R2 themes are all fake, as not only do they "use" parts of Take It by Alex Lee, but most of said tracks are just compressed versions of different official remixes of the song. If I remember correctly, the Mighty version is used for the Present mix, the OPM Mix is used for the Past mix and the Good Future mix, and the Mr. Oz vs Klepto-Maniacs version is used for the Bad Future mix.

4:37 sounds far too advanced for a Past theme. All of CD's Past themes used the Genesis soundchip (Or something along those lines, I'm not entirely sure) instead of the CD-quality music of other tracks to give them a more "retro" feel. They couldn't be easily altered either, which is why the US soundtrack doesn't have any Past themes to call its own.
