I’m so happy I finally got around to covering this song! This song has been on my to-do list for a long time (many Sonic songs have), but I guess I just never sat down and committed to doing it! Jonny messaged me a few months ago and asked if I’d be interested in doing a collab! It took us a while to get something sorted out, but we eventually ended up deciding on doing both Acts of Hydrocity Zone from Sonic Mania, with the first being a bit more slow and funky and the second act being fast and crazy! I absolutely love how Jonny’s version turned out on his channel, you can check it out here!
As for this arrangement, I can’t think of any one particularly standout influences on this one. My Discover Weekly playlist on Spotify turned me onto a few tunes from the Funky Knuckles, and in hindsight, that groove in C minor right after the drum solo intro reminds me a lot of Jacob Collier’s Savior! This was arranged right around the time I got my hands on the bari, so I really wanted to challenge myself and get a good bari solo on this song! In the past, I’ve had a hard time soloing on bari, just because the range is a bit low for my liking - I essentially have to stay in the range above the octave key split to be coherent with my ideas. However, I think I managed to break that tendency a bit with this one, as I’m particularly happy with the solo! While recording for Jonny’s version of this track, I thought it was hilarious that Jonny managed to take my opening lick from the bari solo and use it in his own stuff… brilliance, right there.

I may have commented on this video earlier, but I don't care. I've listened to this song so many times and I don't know why but I love when the solos take off on the Fm-Gm-Ab-Bb progression (2nd half bari solo and Jonny's solo). It's like the car paused at a yield sign, then got on a ramp accelerating to get on the interstate. Also the sax soli around the Ab-Ab-Bb-Bb was so chill like 👌lol. Love it.

CARLOS YES. You know u had me right in the beginning with that sick intro. Loved the guitar and BARI SAX solos, those were great! I do think the piano mixing was a bit off, in the really short interjections, there could have been more. And the bass end of the piano was overpowering at times. But man, that ending! Im just waiting for the day when you let every instrumemt just go insane at the end, and this was close! As YES CLOSING DRUM SOLO GREAT JOB CARLOS
