I will never forget when eggman held Amy hostage at gunpoint, outsmarted Tails and nearly blew up Sonic for real. FUCK do I miss when Eggman had a brain. When he was a mad scientist who wanted to build the eggman empire, not a theme park. When he had a plan beyond: "Wake up big bad monster guy only for it to inevitably turn on me." or "Here's my new big bad robot. I'mma try and smash you with it now, seeing how well that's worked for me the last 12 times." I miss when Knuckles could do 9 + 10 in his head and not get 21. When he had responsibilities and a personality beyond "I'm loud punchy guy now. Also my IQ dropped about 50 points." And god, do I miss when Sonic was just a guy that loved adventure. Who loved the planet that was as cool and blue as he was. Where he was confident and cool but still had those real moments where even he had his doubts. Hopefully he'll make a comeback sometime in the future... for now, I guess I'll take what I can get.

6:53 There's a reason why Sonic remained unchanged: I spoke with one of the developers of Sonic Lost World a few years back (he was teaching a course on game design), and he shared some important insight into how SEGA operates. He said all throughout the game's development, whenever they came up with an idea, they'd have to run it by a "Sonic Council" in Japan. This group would decide whether the idea was on-brand for Sonic, and it went down to the tiniest gameplay details. At once point they had Sonic boost through a tunnel to collect rings, and that got shot down as not being something Sonic "did." Weirder still, they were really flaky about stuff, often changing their minds weeks after an idea had been worked on or canned. (Including the aforementioned tunnel idea.) I therefore wouldn't be surprised if that same Sonic Council forbade the developers from doing anything interesting with Sonic, as doing so would clash with the brand's image.

KZfaq is starting to spread this and I'm glad it is, it's wonderfully stated. Even though Modern Sonic's writers think it has to be endlessly self-deprecating to survive the "fans", letting characters exist in their own world and showing genuine emotion isn't just nostalgic, it's why Sonic Fans are so dedicated to begin with.

Sure, Adventure fans are old and jaded now, but when the next generation becomes old and jaded, they'll just find what those people are jaded about to be funny. Just know it gets better.

It's about time someone brought up the tired storytelling crutch of "Sarcastic self-aware humor" that plagues modern shows and especially reviewers. I am very sick of it as it's just lazy writing.

People have a lot of favourite moments in Sonic, but I have a really small thing that shows how genuine Sonic stories were. At the end of the Team Sonic story in Sonic Heroes, Sonic looks back on the Egg Fleet he teared through with his friends, feeling cocky at the victory. But Knuckles chimes in, teasingly saying that Sonic was scared and needed his friends to survive. So, Sonic admits that he did need his friends and then thanks Knuckles, who is completely taken aback by the unexpected reply. it's so friggin *precious* i want those moments back, man

What you said about self awareness really made me reflect on the stories I love, because I actually love them. Because they're unapologetically weird and goofy, and they focus all of their runtime on saying what they have to say. It's not that the story doesn't realize it, it's that it embraces its weird traits without worrying about wether or not the public will understand it beyond the surface level. I guess there's some confidence in that, compared to constantly hiding behind irony.

I love your little animations. They add more entertainment and depth to the video when you're talking. It's more engaging than other "storytime animation" videos I've seen. I hope you grow even more because this video was cute and insightful!

You make a good point about the ironic content being what's truly cheesy. Honestly, whenever something is ironic nowadays it makes me think the creators are just too cowardly to actually try and put their heart out into a good story. But then again authors are not entirely at fault for this recent development, most of the blame falls on godawful "cringe culture". Glad it's dying out.

There's some great commentary on how overdosing on irony in order to shield oneself from public perception is incredibly harmful. It's better for one to be honest with themselves rather than playing it cool just not to feel embarrassed. It's quite liberating and refreshing compared to endless cycle of cynicism and nihilism among social media.

When you talked about the “self-aware stuff,” my favorite character from Netflix’s *A Series of Unfortunate Events* came to mind. Larry Your-Waiter wasn’t the best agent, but you could tell that he genuine cared about the Bauldelaire children, trying his best to keep them out of the clutches of the dastardly man who murdered their parents to obtain their fortune. His fellow agents either were murdered by Count Olaf or retired from the job, leaving Larry as the only living member of VFD. He was cornered in a room, tied up, and burned in a boiling pot of curry. They quickly made a joke about the food staining Count Olaf’s shirt though, which made me feel even more sad for Larry. Rest In Peace, man.

I still remember when Sonic Unleashed trailer dropped, and that banger Endless Possibilities played. Man, I had goosebumps throughout it, and a bit teary eyed, because Sonic 06 was such a dumpster fire, it felt like SEGA just didn't give a shit about it anymore, but that trailer really resonated within me. The Boost Mechanic, the fantastic visuals, the stunning stages and map design, and the amazing OST in the game; truly one of my favorites ever. Sure Generations was great too, but it felt too humorous for my liking, Unleashed was still fairly serious and told a grounded story, which I appreciated. Also being the last time Jason Griffith voiced him, he really nailed Sonic at this point, coming off as a very genuine character in contrast to the Sonic we have now who's just kind of an wise-cracking asshole, in my opinion. Sonic Unleashed will always be my favorite Sonic game, even though it has it's flaws...many, many flaws.

I'm one of those weird people who has been privately doing my own rewrite for the plot of Sonic 06, because, even though the game is bad and the plot is nonsense, I see SO MUCH promise and sparks of wonderful ideas and characters there that I refuse to let them die there. Mephiles to me is one of Sonic's greatest villains, and I love the whole idea of such a demonic, serious villain like him being in the world of Sonic to face against such a light-hearted character, and while Silver's managed to make it into other games he's never really had much of a focus, even though I also really like the concept of what and who he is as well. Sonic is remarkably special in that way it CAN be ridiculously corny, and amazingly serious and epic at the same time, like a super sentai, or a godzilla movie. I love stories that can do that, and Sonic is the perfect setting to do such things.

Kirby and the legend of Zelda both manage to have amazing stories but honestly, Kirby is a masterpiece. Every game has a totally different vibe while always being Kirby. Every game is a self contained story so anyone can pick it up but if you look at the series as a whole you get an amazing over arching story of friendship ancient mysteries eldritch horrors of pure malice and the power of this one kid to bring people together

Something that has always really bugged me with media in general these days is the fear of showing "actual emotion." As you said, that trend of having to be "ironic" and "self-aware" is pretty prevalent. It seems many are scared of writing or making something that'll be labeled as "cringy" which is why they feel the need to be as ironic and self-deprecating as possible. For me, I love games with a good, emotional, somewhat cheesy story. I find it considerably harder to enjoy a story that is constantly trying to be quirky and not take itself seriously. Why even try and tell a story if you don't even try in the first place? Just feels like hollow and empty filler.

Aw Geez, That part at the end where endless possibilities was dejectedly sung really hit the feels, maybe because that's exactly how the child in me feels. Sonic Stories of the past are among some of the best pieces of media. A lot of people say Sonic and The Black Knight is an amazing story, and a lot of them testify to it helping them deal with morality as a child, myself included. Ijust wish Sonic Stories could do those same things in this day too.

It feels like Sonic has been so many different things to so many different people, but rarely the same thing for more than a couple of games. So the sonic fandom consists of different groups who all like different versions and it's rare for any one group to get another version in the style they liked.

When we played Sonic Forces, the transition of interesting intro plot stuff to BAM HERE'S SOME TEXT SONIC IS DEAD to "Hey just kidding haha but the world is Eggman's" all in the span of 5 minutes gave me whiplash.

Its honestly really refreshing seeing a video talking about Sonic's Story in a hopeful and genuine tone, this isn't some Analyst giving an hour long explanation on how Current Day Shadow needs to be more/less edgy like the old days because thats his character, but instead is a genuine happiness for the silly yet epic stories that sonic was known for.

Bro I'm gonna be honest... I thought this was gonna be one of "those" videos but no. I'm glad It wasn't. This is exactly how I feel. Back then of the days of when I was playing Sonic 06, Sonic Unleashed, Sonic and the black knight... man Sonic was so god damn cool... he's the main reason I myself wanted to be fast. Running around at the speed of sound, Enjoying what the world has to offer. Living freely without a care in the world... can you imagine that? I always thought of how fun and cool it would be. And also having a friend right beside you to go along with you and your adventure... But now... it feels... different... it's just not the same anymore... Whenever Sonic got serious with the face he had, You know (like you said) things were about to go down. It's also one of the things that made Sonic cool. Like Sonic and the Black Knight (Spoilers) when he was getting brutally beaten up by the girl (I forgot her name) but still stood up and fought back. but then thats when Author broke.... the one you were with throughout the whole game... BUT THEN HE WENT SUPER SONIC WITH THE GOLDEN ARMOR!? BRO THAT TRANSFORMATION WAS INSANE!!! It's like, if you compare that moment to Sonic Forces it's immediately 10x better than Sonic Forces... Hopefully when the next Sonic game comes out it'll make me feel like a kid again instead of making me cringe 100% of the time Lol. If you're wondering how I felt about Forces. I beat it in 3 hours. Seriously. No breaks. No nothing. Just 3 hours straight. And what did I feel about that whole game? Nothing. Absolutely nothing. I was hype and wondering what was gonna happen as the story progressed but... I just felt nothing. I just played it just to play it. The gameplay wasn't intriguing. The story wasn't super interesting. Basically I had the Saitama Face from One Punch Man.... Felt nothing.

While Frontiers is finally trying again, I think there were a few moments where they felt like they were trying to cram in the funny. (Spoiler below) Like, when your best friend in the world is having an existential crisis, and asks if he's been a burden to you because he feels like he can't do anything right... probably not the best time to reply with a sarcastic quip. Also don't know how to feel about them basically saying, "Yeah, it makes sense that he cowered in fear when he saw Chaos 0, just don't think about it too hard" But if that whole story on Chaos Island means we're getting a Tails solo game, I guess I can live with Forces still being canon.

Here’s the thing, back in the early 2000’s sonic stories got darker and more mature. Fans didn’t like it they wanted a more, well, Older type of sonic where the story was light hearted. They gave it to us and now people are realizing they don’t actually like it. I feel like sonic team is just confused as cherry pie in the crab market.

You know this video speaks in a way I figure out what happened to Sonic. In concept Sonic was originally a character that was supposed to represent teenage rebellion but with 06 he took it too far so unfortunately Sonic have to bow down to the horrible critics and become a respectable member of Society which is boring and safe, Sonic needs to break free and rebel once more

I grew up with older cartoons and video games and the stories were great in those. I completely understand what you are saying when it comes to the new sonic games. The tails and shadow from the old games is what I miss the most and I hope the soon sonic games will get better.

Commenting to help others see this video- thank you for this. I feel like you summed up the biggest issue with Sonic stories nowadays and I'm so happy this is now getting people's attentions. Rambling on a side note, I found the idea that the Sonic Team "gave up" around Lost World a really intriguing idea, especially considering how vocal the Sonic fanbase has been with its criticisms. For the longest time, the fanbase kept criticizing the Sonic games for the kinds of stories they were doing ("why is he in a storybook now?" "why is he a werewolf?" "why kiss an anime princess?"), and maybe that's why Sonic Team gave up on trying to put passion into their stories. Granted a good chunk of the fans' criticism was directed towards the style of gameplay itself, but it often pointed at story and character elements as part of what was to blame for the game being "bad" ("too many characters," "plot doesn't feel fitting for a Sonic game," "why are you trying something new again Sonic Team?- go back to the 2D era when everything was kept simple!"). SEGA is known for being aware of the fandom, and both the Sonic social media team and Sonic Boom (the show) are evidence of this, so maybe all this "soullessness" is them desperately trying to "please the fandom" instead of just genuinely chasing after stories and new elements they felt passionate about having in their games. I say this as a Sonic fan who got sucked into the popular mindset of "oh 06 is bad," "werehog is bad," "3d Sonic peaked at adventure 2 and its all been downhill from there," and now regrets it seeing as Sonic Team's attempts to please the fans seem to have made them lose their identity as game creators. Sue me, but I miss the deeper, darker plot they tried to go for in 06- I like that they tried brand new stories with Sonic via the Storybook series, Unleashed, Chronicles, etc. Probably the biggest recent tragedy to me was the loss of Sonic Synergy- judging by the concept art, Synergy was going to be radically different from everything we have seen of Sonic before, but it felt like they were genuinely pursuing concepts and brand new ideas that they felt passionate about. Sonic Boom- I feel is the result of the Synergy people fearing that their radically different concepts would receive immense backlash from the community, so they backed off half-way and just tried to merge the current Sonic state with some "safe, non-controversial" elements of Synergy (which resulted in a lackluster series, so they turned extremely cynical and self-aware because they didn't even believe in what they created anymore). Anyway, that's just my sleep-deprived brain thoughts on things. Make of it what you will :P
