Dan you created extra credits. I know you aren't still involved in it's production, but it is still going and still has a wide reach. Extra history is being used in schools. Your greatest cultural impact, even if we limit it to the current youth culture, likely isn't going to be a sound byte. I'm glad the sound byte became memetic, but your impact is probably wider than you're giving yourself credit for.

That bonus level music is like the auditory equivalent of feeling seasick or vertigo. Like that queasy nausea feeling without actually being sick.

Having just played Mario Wonder, It's really interesting to see two wildly different approaches to designing a 3D "2D" platformer. Sonic Superstars fully embraced the 3 dimensions in its game design. There's perspective on the platforms that changes depending on their height and depth, gimmicks that specifically interact with 3D space like those walls you can run up, and lots of subtle transitions into a more background portion of the stage. And for cutscenes like the boss intros the camera straight up breaks away from the 2D angle lock and starts flying around. Meanwhile, Mario Wonder felt like it really wanted me to forget it was 3D. The main platform assets have no perspective and the camera stays locked in place no matter what happens. Wonder also plays with the whole closer/further away mechanic, but instead of subtle depth transitions they go all out and send you to the parallax scenery way in the back or front, thing you never even registered as part of the playable level. Overall, it feels very much like a classic 2D game that's simply using 3D assets instead of sprites.

Dan keeps pushing that Sonic shaped boulder up that hill in video game hell.

I feel Sonic games like this call for thumbnail art of Dan in mostly the same outfit and demeanor, but with a sort of half-shrug and expression that says "mildly pleasant".

As someone who has never played a Sonic game, i find it quite fascinating (according to my own observations watching various content creators with varying opinions of Sonic spanning the entire range) that the general gaming landscape at large and the dedicated/hardcore Sonic fans seem to quite frequently have inverse opinions of Sonic games.

I happened to watch Barry playing this on his stream. From what I saw, this game IS good right up until it isnt. It seems to fall into the same problems late game as other Sonic games.

The use of the old SFX is so delightful! I have a ton of happy childhood memories of playing Sonic 3 at a friend's house (and fewer memories of occasionally playing Sonic 1 at my cousin's house), so this game is very much tapping into childhood nostalgia for me, and while visual designs do a lot of work there, the audio is perhaps doing even more!

I feel so sorry for Dan, committed to experiencing every Sonic game...yet not being a fan. And for those people who think he's in denial...go watch this man's Final Fantasy stuff. You'll see what it sounds like when he's a fan. That said, thanks for putting yourself through all these games, and providing us with some great insight along the way!

Any Sonic game that makes you want to make your own "vroom" sound effect is a good game IMO.

I think my problem with sonic is that it's a game that wants you to go fast but it doesn't give you a lot of ways to tell how you should go about doing that. As you are going fast it's hard to see what's around you and it's not easy to just walk through the levels to find stuff. I imagine as you play that becomes easier because you learn the possibilities and the sign posts for things but it makes it difficult for me to get into it. At least for me. My eyesight and reaction time aren't great, so that adds to it.

- yeah the Purple guy is Fang, he has been around since the Game Gear. Trip is new for this game (also i love that Fang is basically chosen to the the Classic Counterpart of Shadow) - if I'm not mistaken, the Fruit rouletes are timing based - Act Sonic/Tails/Knuckles/Amy is basically a Character exclusive stage, you can still access it as other characters but it swaps you you to Sonic/Tails/Knuckles/Amy for the duration of that stage - the Robot avatars are for the Multiplayer modes

The best way to describe this game is that it really draws a lot of inspiration from the first handful of Classic games…. That’s both really good and REALLY bad, because they didn’t know when to stop and update for the Modern Age of Gaming.

I’ll fully admit my interest in this video is purely due to Dan’s legitimate history with each Sonic games. He does many things, but his ‘Every Sonic’ Thing is a good one.

My main problem with the side scrolling sonic games is how slow he feels when you start moving from a standstill.

From what I've seen/remember I tend to think 3D Sonic models look kinda jank and awkward, but it all looks pretty smooth here so far. I also kinda like how they used depth like at 4:45, feels like something that would belong in the 1st Sonic if they were able to make it work without spending ages back then.

I don't know why but the 3D artwork in this one makes me think of the Kirby games.... I think it has the similar cutesy charm or something.

Was looking forward to this one! After the teasers and trailers I was a bit luke-warm on the 3D style. Would have loved more high-quality pixel art like with Sonic Mania, but when I played it, it's actually really good! The level designs are also extremely good, unfortunately the game has some serious issues with its boss fights. If you know, you know lol

Oh this game has a lot of charm and fun new gimmicks in it! Might pick it up at some point!

One thing that's always bothered me about Sonic games is how little you can see in front of you. It's a platformer with a focus on speed, so I feel like you should have quite a good view, to be able to make precise reactions. In this one; Why is Sonic in the middle of the screen? If he were in the left corner, the screen wouldn't even need to zoom out for better visibility, so the sense of speed wouldnt suffer.

I'm not totally on board with the music, but besides that and a few nitpicks, overall this feels like a very nice return towards the kind of gameplay I loved as a kid, much like Generations. I respect what Sonic Team did with Frontiers-a solid gameplay experiment that didn't land for me-but overall it feels like they aren't as skilled to do full 3D, story-driven action-adventure games as they have been with the last several 2.5D games.

this game looks really good and really fun. 4 player sounds like chaos with everyone running around. player made character that feels like something from sonic as opposed to forces which to me felt like random guy attached to BROKEN GUN. The powers are interesting having the individual chaos emeralds do something, rather than you have to have all of them to have them do something. I think the biggest problem with this game is the price. $60 when Mania is $20 and the DLC is $5, even combined that's less than half of superstars. you could get SA2+ battle DLC, mania +DLC, AND generations for a little less than this 1 game. it's just not worth it. also there's some Denuvo DRM stuff that people are upset about but IDK much about that.

I just find the core concept of sonic to be kinda self defeating. It's about going fast and having good flow but that speed and flow is the reward for not making mistakes. But if thats the reward for not making mistakes, then the gameplay for a new player is, by design, slow and clunky. Meanwhile in mario speed and flow are just assumed. Like that bit where you jumped and saw all these rings that you didn't run into because you didn't jump in the exact way the game wants you to to reward you. In Mario the jump would just be set up such that the way a player typically jumps makes them run into the coins. I just find the experience of playing sonic to be one of frustration a lot of the time. Maybe it just rubs me the wrong way, but I strongly suspect this is why Sonic has never had the level of success Mario has.

So... if you're feeling good about Sonic again, can we have a NewFrame about Sonic's handheld titles? 😃

It is definitely a good game, but it has some glaring flaws: one in particular would be the boss fights and how they can range from tedious to sometimes unfair. On the plus side, I love all the playable characters🤩
