What it is primarily about with the REU, and why it has to be an REU capable cartridge, is its DMA (Direct Memory Access) feature. It makes the REU Cartridge able to aid the 6510 CPU with copying data around really fast. The game uses this to achieve the really fast scrolling needed for a Sonic game.

Last year I was part of a Kickstarter that brought "The Orange Cartridge" to life. The Orange Cartridge is an open source FPGA cartridge for the the C64/C128. One of the things it can emulate is an REU and it runs Sonic The Hedgehog perfectly. I've also built a RAD Expansion Unit that can emulate REUs (up to 16mb). The DOOM demo released by its creator is pretty impressive as well, using the RADs Raspberry Pi as an external CPU for the C64 hardware.

Haven't heard of The Orange Cartridge". The RAD unit looks interesting. It's controversial in the scene since it uses a Pi, but then again the SuperCPU was "controversial" until recent years. Recently SuperCPU is a very hot topic all of a sudden.

@@redrumloa I don't know if anyone has done any further production runs for The Orange Cartridge and the creator (Marcus Comstedt) really hasn't done much more with it from what I can tell. I got one as I really really wanted to get my hands on an REU of any kind, and the 1541 Ultimate and Turbo Chameleon solutions have been hard to get hold of. The Orange Cartridge can also play video files (.M64) which are easy to create using software tools released by Marcus.

@@redrumloa I built a RAD Expansion Unit the other week. I don't like having to use a pi to have a REU, but it is the only type of REU that I could reasonably get. It was only reasonable to get as I had a pi3a+ that I purchased a few years ago as they aren't easy to find a retail prices. It can run Sonic, I'll have to try it on my 128 and see if it works with the 128 cpu being a "modern REU" type, or it may not have whatever the difference is with the other modern REUs.

Commodore 64 & 128 only had mono output and this is real hardware, not emulation. I'm keeping authentic 😀

Thank you for taking the time for all of this. It's inspiring me to get my old c64 1541-II out and start tinkering again. What were these reu units used for, in their day, other than BBS software?

REUs were certainly under utilized back in the day. From personal experience I only found it helped with terminal emulation programs and certain copy programs.

Ida know, with SuperCPU it sure looks impressive but with my reflex I probably would enjoy the unaccelerated variant more 😉

REU in reality is not a ram expension but a really fast storage device.

Perhaps a dumb question, but what means the load « * »,8,8 ? Why not just 8,1 ? Best regards

The 2nd number can be anything. 8 is closer than 1 to where my finger is on the keyboard at the moment. I don't even think about it at this point.

Tried it on a chameleon v1 in standalone mode , but did not get it working probably wrong settings after your video need to check it again :)

It might make sense to reset to defaults before trying again. In standalone I'd recommend running as a PAL system. Let me know if you continue to have problems. Also make sure you have the latest main C64 core installed.

@@tlaskows This is a direct port of the Sega Master System version of the original Sonic game.

@@redrumloa oh. I never had the Sega Master system in real hardware and not planning. It's old and expensive to find in new or fully rebuilt condition and then I would have to purchase the cartridge and hope it works ... I have the U64 and if it's the same port, the game is not that good. Requires REU.
