Bit of a long post. I apologize ahead of time: To be fair, we don't know if Surge was forced into this like Monkey Kong in Archie Sonic or if she willingly wanted this for herself. That's why she is so mad. She didn't care that she was killed off/tortured time again in Starline's experiments(she didn't bat an eye when she saw the video clips) She just freaked out when she realized she had no idea who she was. So she feels she is forced to be Sonic's shadow, that's it. She reasoned either no one was looking for her, so the planet could burn. Or she was already a bad guy volunteering for this, so the planet can burn anyway.

Finally! Someone gets it! The Sonic vs debate community is genuinely awful because everything to them is an excuse to vs debate and compare power levels, and then inevitably whine whenever Sonic loses a fight. Surge has been getting shafted by vs debaters like this since her very first appearance long before she met Sonic, people constantly ignoring every last detail of her characterization in favor of seeing how strong she is compared to Sonic or Metal Sonic, and the constant mockery at the very idea that she might actually stand a chance. Don't get me wrong I love to vs debate to, but there is a time and a place and a comic dub where a character is pouring out their heart and soul about the tragedy of their life is not the place to complain about your favorite characters losing.

​@@anthonyrodriguez8788AMEN BRO SERIOUSLY Surge is such an unbelievably interesting and well written character and her mental conundrum is one of the most defining aspects of her character, it's absolutely amazing I used to also be a fan of the while Vs debate crowd when I was younger before I realized....a character winning in a scenario is based on waaaaay to many outside and outlying attributes that the entire concept of going back and forth on who wins what is fucking dumb Definitely when the story being told is so much more interesting than the result of the fight Which character wins is entirely dependent on the story being told and the writer who is writing the story Surge is living proof tho that no matter how well written a character may be or how sorrowful and deep a story can be. All most fans see is just another colorful pawn to add to their power scaling debate army. Surge gets so much hate already for just being GREEN LIKE SCOURGE and now she has to fight off ppl who hate her for simply BEING STRONG AND WINNING it's ridiculous and it's why I try as hard as I can to separate myself from the sonic community

No, you're not alone. What Surge and Kit suffered at Starline's hands was horrific. The reason why Sonic is holding back is because he recognizes that, is deeply moved by it, and is trying to talk them down. If Surge was just another two-bit villain, he would be putting out a lot more effort to clobber her, and he wouldn't have had his ass beat so easily, but he didn't. That speaks to Sonic's noble character, in that he recognizes that they're brainwashing victims and is trying to help them. For Surge's part, whoever she was before Starline turned her into this is gone, and she's rightfully angry about it, and is seeking relief the only way she knows how, even if a part of her clearly fears that killing Sonic won't make her whole. It's a very complex situation, and my first thought when I see this is not, "Aww, man, Sonic got beat up by a girl, that sucks", my first thought is something more along the lines of, "Damn, is Surge ever going to recover from her brainwashing? Will she ever be alright?"

I say top contenders would be Mephiles not just for Sonic but mental attack on Shadow, Dark Gaia for putting Sonic through pain itself, and Merlina who gives Sonic an beatdown with literal Swords that cut reality on their own slashes.

Sonic and the secret Rings has a final boss where Sonic while fueld with pain rage sadness and hatred is punch the heart of a literal god while screaming his lungs out because the god in question killed his friend. But to be honest I would agree that the fight between Sonic and Surge feels even more visceral and hate filled despite the lack of heart punching. Probably because of Sonics desperation to get through to Surge.

@@anthonyrodriguez8788 I am going more by Game Sonic rather than IDW Sonic as Game Sonic is more in-line with his Japanese Interpretation who rarely lets his emotions show due to constantly living in-the-moment. Especially the actor for Jap Sonic gives the same rage as Dark Sonic who absolutely represent an unchained animal or a state of Sonic above his serious nature. The fight for me after seeing it (And knowing extensive lore on Sonic's rivals and how they all stack to one another) was one-sided in such a sad and metaphorically heart-punching way. Surge got killed 200+ times, enhanced with Power Cores just to match (Casual) Sonic who basically blitz Surge before his next battle has him hurt more by Eggman- getting an injured leg but still able to toy, blitz and put a can on Surge's head using the energy of 1-3 Wisps nearly burning out her Cybernetics. All while Sonic clearly is still standing even with worse injuries showing Sonic Endurance/Durability >> Surge's Endurance/Durability. Then the final moment does have Sonic holding back to as mention; desperately get through Surge. He is not even fighting full force and ironically falls into the water because Surge could not keep Blue Wisp Energy on long enough for Sonic to stand on. And as mention, she basically uses 7 Energy Sources being herself, Metal's Black Shield, 5 Wisps and even an water advantage to do nothing but land killing blows and Sonic is left more stunned than hurt. He even is able to willing fight Metal so that Eggman does not get Surge only for Kitsunami deciding to bring Starline's base down and Sonic still walking means he was more tired running into Eggman after Starline's Trap and his 1st battle with Surge than he was with Surge this time around.

@@Rathalos2428 IDW Sonic and Game Sonic are the exact same character, the IDW Comics are canon until stated otherwise. as for the Wisps, Surge had no problem handling the power of five Wisps, Surge overloaded herself because she became a power addict and was absorbing all the energy she could, First from Starline Base Gamma where she absorbed every watt of energy she could before the based tarted relying on the emergency generators, then she absorbed Eggman's Chaos Drive, and then she absorbed all of Metal Sonics energy. I would also like to point out that Sonic only used the Final Color Blaster for less than five seconds before he stopped using it. Sonic fell because she dissipated the platform he was standing on, you see her gesturing to dissipate it, you are trying really hard to downplay Surge if you somehow got the impression that Surge dropping Sonic was an accident. Eggman has never stated that Sonic was getting slower in his fight with Surge nor was Sonic blitzing Surge before that point, Sonic got the better of Surge in their first fight because she was getting angry and sloppy which caused her to overextend her attacks.

This isn't a Superman situation dude, Sonic doesn't hold back to the point where he could accidentally destroy the planet. I would also like to point out that not long before this scene Surge beat the absolute snot out of Metal Sonic while Sonic was helping him, and Metal Sonic is just as powerful as Sonic and he doesn't hold back. To be frank as soon as Metal Sonic went down the only chance Sonic had was to hold out while Surges Dynamo Cage finally overloaded.

Metal sonic wouldn't go to the extreme amount of power where he would destroy everything because then he would end up killing eggman. His creator. The one thing metal sonic needs to protect. So obviously metal sonic would hold back to make sure his master is safe.

@@Genesis_Prime no.....just no. Metal Sonic goes all out all the time, heck his Maximum V Overdrive is him literally overloading his own circuitry in order to increase his speed by a factor of 4. Sonic does not hold back that much and Metal Sonic doesn't hold back at all.

@@Genesis_Prime 1. That's their Super forms, not their base forms 2. Sonic does NOT scale to Super Sonic 3. Metal Sonic still uses the V Maximum Overdrive, heck he used that move in the beginning of this very arc while hunting down an injured Sonic like a horror movie villain 4. Surge is already on par with Sonic physically without the Dynamo Cage, the only major difference between the two is combat experience.

Different medias depicted different outcome but all results one thing: Sonic now has internal Ring Energy that acts as a healing factor, which helps him withstand even the deadliest attack or heavy collision such as falling from great height and is completely unfazed with a brief disorient. 2) Sonic was killed 3 times canonically now. He was impaled by Mephiles and was resurrected by the Chaos Emeralds. He momentarily died then revitalize when he transformed into Darkspine Sonic (as he's a Collector and his brief death allows him to use 3 Rings at full power to defeat Erazor), and now he was killed by Surge but revitalize by his internal Ring Energy since it's not equivalent to Mephiles' antimatter attack. 3) Sonic was shown time and time again he survived fatal attacks that should've killed him. That's because his internal Ring Energy are like Extra Lives. Surge and Kit had artificial version through the modified Zombot.

@joel1245 The only thing that's wrong with your sources is that Sonic was killed by Surge and Erazor Djinn. He was not. Sonic became Darkspine after the death of his genie partner, Shara. And with Surge's case, while his rings may have been keeping him alive (the rings aren't a touched factor in IDW), he didn't die from Surge's attack. He has only died once, and that was at the hands of Mephiles.

She's not an ally, or you picked up a later issue- she was basically brainwashed and enhanced repeatedly to hate and kill sonic, and the trauma has left her unstable. Dr. Starline, her creator,is dead, but because of all the trauma and programming she doesnt want to be allies

​@@justynhill4814 I don't mind the character, it is actually pretty great info to work with if I ever get the time. In terms of what I enjoy deciphering, Surge seems to be a good rival but her lack of identity makes it irrelevant for Sonic to sway as he did with other Rivals making her fall in lines with Metal, thematically speaking. In terms of power, Surge needed an Amp to both tag and damage Sonic who is less hurt and more shocked (unironically speaking) which can be compared to how in DBS, Vegeta lands an punch when he is not close to hurting Jiren but the fact Vegeta landed an hit on Jiren shocked Jiren more than the actual damage. That's how I see Sonic's reaction, you see something like your little brother you're trying to convince only for their strength to go from something you can overpowered to literally having you on your own back, the shock alone is more startling than the damage that follows.
