Sonic the Hedgehog[a] is a video game series and media franchise created by the Japanese developers Yuji Naka, Naoto Ohshima, and Hirokazu Yasuhara for Sega. The franchise follows Sonic, an anthropomorphic blue hedgehog who battles the evil Doctor Eggman, a mad scientist. The main Sonic the Hedgehog games are platformers mostly developed by Sonic Team; other games, developed by various studios, include spin-offs in the racing, fighting, party and sports genres. While Sonic games often have unique game mechanics and stories, they feature recurring elements such as the ring-based health system, level locales, and fast-paced gameplay. Sonic the Hedgehog is Sega's flagship franchise and one of the bestselling video game franchises, selling over 140 million units by 2016 and grossing over $5 billion as of 2014. Series sales and free-to-play mobile game downloads totaled 1.6 billion as of 2023. The Genesis Sonic games have been described as representative of the culture of the 1990s and listed among the greatest of all time. Although later games, notably the 2006 game, received poorer reviews, Sonic is influential in the video game industry and is frequently referenced in popular culture. The franchise is known for its fandom that produces unofficial media, such as fan art and fangames.
Shadow the Hedgehog[a] is a character who appears in Sega's Sonic the Hedgehog franchise. He was created by Takashi Iizuka and Shiro Maekawa and first appeared in Sonic Adventure 2 (2001). Within Sonic's fictional universe, Shadow is an anthropomorphic black hedgehog created by Professor Gerald Robotnik, the grandfather of the series' antagonist Doctor Eggman. After witnessing the death of his best friend Maria Robotnik, Shadow initially seeks revenge, but later vows to keep his promise to her that he would protect the world from danger. An antihero, Shadow has good intentions but will do whatever it takes to accomplish his goals, putting him at odds with Sonic the Hedgehog.
Shadow shares many attributes with Sonic and controls similarly in games, but is distinguished by his use of vehicles and firearms. The idea for Shadow originated during the development of Sonic Adventure (1998). Iizuka and Maekawa sought to portray him as a subtle, "cool" character players could care about. Sonic Adventure 2 was intended to be Shadow's only appearance, but his popularity among fans led to Sonic Team including him in Sonic Heroes (2003). Shadow has since featured in numerous Sonic games, including the spin-off Shadow the Hedgehog (2005). He also appears in Sonic adaptations, comics, and merchandise.
Shadow is one of the series' most popular characters and was named one of the greatest video game characters by Guinness World Records in 2011. However, he has proven divisive among video game journalists. Some have praised his role in Sonic Adventure 2 and his levels' preservation of the Sonic theme, but others have criticized his dark and brooding characterization, particularly in later games. Writers have ranked Shadow among the worst Sonic characters. The Shadow game received generally unfavorable reviews, though it sold well.

And the level design is really really good although weird in some places but still , it may not look as good as gens/unleashed level design for some people ( for me it does ) but it still holds up

⁠@@elarbibendamia1993yea, for me its generations level, some people say that there isn’t drift or light speed dash and that makes it worse but I think the chaos control, chaos spear and maybe other chaos moves make up for it. The fact that you can time stop and with good timing create a path is really good.

Controversy about a sonic game? No way, I can’t believe this Fadel released a Video about an Hour ago, he said the Shadow level he played (Ark Act 1) was about 5-6 minutes long and that there was a bunch of alternate paths

Yeah Fadel posted a video on Twitter showing the full level. It looks more vibrant and colorful with a ton of alternate paths and the gameplay just looks better since he's actually boosting. It doesn't look as exhilarating as Unleashed and OG Generations but it still looks decent. Way better than Forces and Colors that's for sure.

I think going for something more stimulating in the first Shadow level is a smart choice. Making the player stimulated makes them excited and makes them want so see more of the game, ensuring that they have a positive experience right out the gate, and making sure they stick around for the rest of the game. Most games do this.

On the note of the lack of depth of field we also have to keep in mind that the original game was locked at 30 on consoles and so they had to make some background elements blurry to keep it running steady. The lack of DOF in the remaster could be an indication that they’ve added more detailed background elements cause the consoles can now handle all that stuff while running at 60.

This game is shaping up to be the quintessential Shadow the Hedgehog gameplay experience. - Flawless running/skating animation - Teleport attack instead of the traditional homing attack - Chaos Control (possibly on demand) - Chaos Spear (also possibly on demand) - Black Arms wings! And god knows what else we're getting here. I've got my fingers crossed for Chaos Blast to make a return as a top tier unlock.

Looking at Sonic Generations vs Shadow Generations, the first thing that catches my interest is the automatic camera. Mainly in Kishimoto games like Forces and Frontiers, when the camera changes angles, it tends to just snap in and out of place like it's on a rail, whereas other 3D Sonic games tends to ease into the camera angles like it's being controlled by a drone, even in older titles like Heroes. I wish they would have more easing with the camera, since it makes it feel less like I'm observing the character and more like I'm running alongside them. I'm hoping that the Shadow Generations levels will be challenging, whether just the general level design or if they add the ranking system. I've heard some mentions of there being more alternate paths, but I don't think alternate paths will matter much if the main path is extremely easy; what does it matter if you can beat a stage in several different ways if the first way is the easiest? I'm cautiously optimistic, and I like that it even exists as it says a lot regarding Sega/Sonic Team's change in philosophy. Still, the things I've seen so far seem to range from "this looks too easy" or "I don't know what to make of this without playing it". I want this to be good, but I'm not going into this with any guarantees. The Hedgehog Engine 2 titles in controls, level design, and certain visual elements, have yet to rival the Hedgehog Engine 1 titles to me, but I want this to be the best it can be.

I have to say, this is the first time I've been optimistic about a 3D Sonic title since the OG Generations (not to say I didn't like Frontiers, but the trailers had me worried going into it). Everything in the Shadow portion looks incredibly clean. The animations especially look fantastic. The level design also looks significantly improved. I noticed multiple branching paths within the section on the Ark and everything seems to flow very well without looking too linear. Also, the biolizard bossfight looks sick. I'm actually really excited for this one!

Fun fact, from the the video of the guy that played the full stage. Its basically a 5-6 minute stage. I'm not sure if every stage will be this long but i do know the first one is 5-6 minutes

I have a theory: in the opening stage black doom says his latest creation. I think he is reffering to time eater, as in the trailer (time eater) doesnt have the gears he had in sonic generations

Time Eater being Black Doom's creation would explain why Eggman simply found it wandering space after the events of Colors, and why it was so easily tamed by the doctor. Time Eater isn't a mystical deity, it is an artificial creation.

That'd be one hell of a way to fix what's perhaps the worst villain in the entire franchise. Then again there was always theories that Time Eater was tied to remains of Mephiles.

If we are getting long levels in the Shadow Generations portion of the game, hopefully it is a sign that Sonic Unleashed will be the next game to get remastered. It was the first Sonic game to use the Hedeghog Engine which Sonic X Shadow Generations uses. If you watch that IGN interview with the creator of the new game, one of the questions is if there is any more remasters in the works. The crowd cheered very CRAZY when the interviewer mentioned Sonic Unleashed... and then there is that one person that screamed Sonic Heroes. While the creator hasn't got plans for remasters, if that reaction from the crowd about Sonic Unleashed says something to him, it is now going to be something to think about. IGN even told the creator to ignore the reviews of Sonic Unleashed because deep down it really is a GREAT game. The reason why I am pointing out about level length and Sonic Unleashed is that the levels are LONG in Sonic Unleashed. You got some that takes over 4 minutes, and then probably like 10 minutes for the Werehog stages, and let's not forget the behemoth that is Eggmanland - 45 minutes! I am happy to be double dipping into Sonic Generations again, and definitely getting Digital Deluxe since I already got the Xbox 360 and 3DS versions. If there is a Sonic game that I already got in my collection that I need to double dip into again, it is Sonic Unleashed. It has gotten to the point that it is now dubbed as a Classic in the franchise. Sonic is a franchise that should be celebrated, even to the games that were in the Dark Era of the 2000s. I would LOVE to give Sonic '06 a go at some point if it had a remaster, and if Year of Shadow is doing REALLY well for marketing with SEGA, I hope to see the Year of Silver in the near future since we gotta give the white hog that looks like a marijana leaf the attention. We grew up with these characters and we still love them to this day, even to the lesser known ones too. And I am still begging for remasters of the Sonic Riders franchise. The 2000s era of Sonic should be celebrated, and since we are in the 2020s with a 2000s nostalgia at this moment - why not celebrate the games.

There are several levels in Sonic Forces where you can beat them by just holding the Bost button and jumping occasionally, so you can literally beat them using one hand and never touch the analog stick. So Shadow Generations already outdoes Forces level design tenfold because (at least from what we've seen so far) you can't do that

31:17 Pup Ian Flynn Confirmed that Shadow Generations is gonna be 2 hours long and the reason why Izuka said that Shadow Generations is gonna be shorter than Sonic Generations is because Sonic Generations as a Whole is 3 hours long so Im fine with Shadow Generations being an Hour Short than Sonic Generations as long as they hit the right notes its gonna be the greatest sonic remaster of all time!

Not only will I Replay this Game Again but I’m looking forward to playing Shadow in a Modern Game as he only has 4 Playable Appearances(Forces Doesn’t and will Never Count) in the Franchise’s History, it’s going to be Great to seeing Sega not only embracing the Ultimate Lifeform’s Past but expanding his Lore on every greater horizons, even though I would love to see more Characters Explored, I have to admit seeing Final Chase, Westropolis, and the Biolizard Boss Again makes me feel more excited for the Year of Shadow as they look polished and well recreated, I have to find Time to Play SA2, Heroes, and Shadow 05 before this Game Drops.

"Not as long as Generations" is fine because that could just mean the length of time to clear Modern Sonic stages instead of both versions. Im optimistic about the level length because Games Cage took nearly 6 minutes to finish the ark and he knows what he's doing. Theres apparently multiple acts according to the demo menu So cutscenes, stages, hub world exploration - it could be 2 hours or more of new game

I think the main reason they are is because the guy behind forces is behind Shadow Generations. I agree that it’s more like those but the comparisons show how much he’s improved, at least I would say

I will say this, looking at the gameplay and seeing those alternate paths, they do seem like they just last a couple seconds and just go back on the main path. For example the anti gravity platforms you were talking about, before the camera turns you can actually see where they go and it just looks like it goes up then left to a spring which takes you back on the main path. I noticed stuff like this in a couple other of the alternate paths so that does have me a bit worried, just gonna have to wait and see more though.

I think people are missing the sheer number of alternate paths in the shadow gameplay. Right at the start there are boxes you can break to go under the platforming section and access a totally different path. That’s something I only just now noticed

Honestly my only real issue is i just don't feel like it's worth the price tag and that im personally better off waiting for a sale. But what i have seen looks fun and solid.

Honestly I’m really happy that the base game isn’t $60, even if it’s just $10 off. Digital Deluxe is $60, but at least it isn’t $70 like Superstars Digital Deluxe (and OH BOY I regretted that)

So, I was always expecting that the Shadow portion of Generations would be shorter than Sonic, if only by merit of having one playable character rather than two, but then there's also only really four games to pull levels from. Well, six if you include the Rivals duology. Maaaaaybe seven if they call forward to Forces. Well, even if it's just the main console games that are represented, hopefully we'll see at least two levels from each, and get eight to ten altogether. I'd certainly like to hope it isn't limited to just the three shown in the trailer.

after seeing all the clips and stuff I think we are truly eating good, and i cant wait to see how much the game wants us to use chaos control, because he uses chaos control for a section to make another pathway. If levels later on get more challenging which i hope they do, i wonder how strategic using chaos control will be

Honestly we just dont see enough. But one thing i wish you mentioned was the fact that sonic unleashed was very reactive to its gameplay. It was centered around going fast but it had lots of obstacles that would slow you down which made getting those faster times on unleashed levels all the more rewarding. Sonic forces you didnt really have to react to much while boosting. In unleashed, rocks and pilllars would fall, bumpers could knock you back . If you dont slow down and drift you could run off the stage. Its Honestly stuff like thst i miss in boost sonic games.

7:02 Ok I'm really sick of sonic fans commenting on this part right here. Talking about how "linear it is". Sections like these are GOOD. They act as a transition to the next section, and you can just run for a little bit without worrying about obstacles, and admiring the visuals. I love the part at the end of Green Hill in Gens, when you have to run through a valley, and underneath a waterfall. It's pure spectacle and that's cool. You do NOT need to be dodging spikes, or homing attack things every single seconds. I want them to add MORE sections like this. I want each section of the level to be divided by small spectacle sets where you run along nice scenery for a few seconds

Level design-wise i think its not forces-tier level design but it IS the same "style" of it. But a version that is actually engaging this time. It seems at least on frontiers' level which was at least solid. If they keep going and engaging the player more it can get pretty good. Looks promising! Looks that it'll be at least a solid game, not on gens level but a good game nontheless

The thing about that video you're referencing is that GameXplain compared X360 footage of Gens with PC footage of SSG. I've crosschecked it with the Steam release of Gens, and there's no difference whatsoever. There's no DoF because the background texture resolution is higher and (allegedly) there's no need to hide it, it's obviously at 60FPS, and the textures are the same. So, at least so far, Sonic part of SSG is merely an "upgrade" to the PC version current fidelity.

After watching a gameplay footage i can say that Shadow Generations is the best looking game with really good animations and polished gameplay only sad thing is that it is blocked by a remake of generations because a lot of people propably bought Sonic Generations on steam so they don't need a second version

Said it before and ill say it again. Im not a fan of how they use Shadow, the jump ball, the double jump. You can see its 2 game Engines in one game. Other than this complaint i am excited

From all the videos released the level design is very singular and the diversions barely move off the main path. At this point replacing the Sonic Team designers with the Dream Team seems like a no brainer.

One thing i want to mention with black doom: why does he make the phantom ruby sound when it transitions from the ark to the weird radical highway? (Honestly, it would explain why that bit does kind of look like something infinite would make.)

I'm definitely interested in the Shadow part of this game. But i'm still getting a Sonic Forces vibe, where there's going to be multiple styles and then there's Shadow's campaign. Sure it's supposed to be a remaster, but I really feel they could just focus on making this a standalone Shadow game. Still, I'm looking forward to it. Idk about full price however. Frontiers was great, so I will be optimistic about this one.

Per the punches and kicks during the Biolizard fight, honestly if all they accomplish is the same thing a simple homing attack did in the original but force you to button mash a bit to accomplish it, I'd say that's unnecessary (and it doesn't look great either). Best to streamline combat in Sonic games as much as possible. It's never been the series' forte and every time they try it it comes out clunky at best, obtrusive at worst

Ehhh...I'm genuinely worried about the replay value of shadow gens. Those cutscenes and qtes are getting in the way of my runs for sure. And I know that they're just going to bore me after awhile. Kind of concerned about how the other levels will play out too, and how 2d will be implemented. The most optimal path ways don't have much depth to them either so far, and might as well just be overly simple short cuts. Totally reminds me of forces and cyberspace. Especially cyberspace man....
