Steve Shelly was the first one i noticed. I dont think I'd use the word monster but hes very special. Love his early work wioth catpower too. Everyone in SY is so unique but Steve does stand out to me, especially on more subdued songs. I can see how someone would use "monster" on the more energetic songs. I also think SY's more subdued sound is so full of energy so its hard fo me to come up with the right descriptive word. But yeah, he deserves much focus and props.

I was just thinking that. Steve Shelley was such a HUGE influence on so many drummers (myself included), but hardly gets credit for it.

@beautifullights8484

@@sexobscura They were already moving away from no wave by the time Steve joined, the move towards an alternative sound was just a result of the band's evolving sound.
@sexobscura

@@beautifullights8484 Even though they 'emerged' from that milieu, I wouldn't never be so bold as to class early Sonic Youth as 'No Wave' in the purist sense. Sure, they were 'noisy' and 'unconventional' but they forged their own musical path. I just meant to highlight that Shelley helped define a more 'conventional' type of songcraft to their playing ('Sister' being a prime example)

@@sexobscura Yeah, I dont know about thast. Steve Shelly was definitly there during some very chaotic/beautiful performances. I never saw a conventional SY performance live, myself. Started seeing live in late 90s-early 2000s and i did miss these performances. The shows i saw were pomoting albums that really disappoeared through the cracks but wee so great. They were like the polar opposite of goo or the incredibly popular 100%. I like those two songs but they're not so experimental. I associate Steve Shelly with quite expermental music. But i definitely would use monster or beast to describe really any SY member but probably especially not Steve Shelly. Graceful, weird, energetic and powerful, but not beast lol. Also, itd be weird i think if he were a particulaly beastly drummer. Wouldnt work. No monsterous/beastly drums on the SY SY album. That was Richard Edson. Starkly different drumming and overall compositions. But beastly??? I dont get thst personally. Do you not enjoy what youre calling thier more conventional Steve Shewlly involved work? Do you think its better or worse...or just different. Not tryin to actually argue about a deciptor but i am curious. Have a nice one.

When they released their album Goo, they were accused in the French rock magazines of having gone commercial. I remember very well the review in Rock & Folk: they're old, they're tired and they've sold their soul to a major company. According to the magazine, half of the album was to be thrown away. I wish I could find it back now.

@@wellesradio But if you know Steve didn't get the position by being part of a radio contest, along with their history & reputation, it's a pretty safe bet Sonic Youth didn't get invited to play a radio station contest in their pre-Shelley years in particular. More warm tones with less projection with a slightly less "bouncy" more controllable rebound than a single typical single ply clear head. Also the feel between the snare head and the tom batter heads will feel consistent and at the speed he's playing with the need to so paradiddle rolls etc. to mimic single stroke rolls across the kit that same "feel" is essential.
