There's been a lot of noise surrounding the Littlebits Synth Kit. made in conjunction with Korg, it's essentially a set of Monotron modules in snap together electronic kit form. We take a look - Happy Christmas!

This is way cooler than the comments section would have me believe. You get modular style modulation without the modular price.

Just got mine ~ May 2021~ fantastic little units, even with all my modular synths etc. Props to Korg! great company.

Id like to see someone put it all in a mudular case and wire all the connectors to jacks so we can rout and use it like a proper modular synth!

If they made some sort of CV module that would allow volca integration I think that would be fun.

I'm actually excited about this. I'm normally not taken by Korgs analogue productline, but this has something. Obviously for it to really shine, they need to expand upon the premise with buyable stuff, like i wrote in the unboxing video; loose modules, a few different starter packs at different price ranges, more utility modules like CV/gate and MIDI, perhaps something to hook it directly up with a Nanokey controller, a noiseless PSU, and some cases - which would also allow the live performance if done right. I'm also actually quite surprised at how little noise there seems to be while battery operated - the Monotrons are noisy as hell, so if it's the same components, something obviously changed for the better! GJ Nick, and GJ Korg. This time they have a real chance to rake in money hand over fist.

As for the PSU, I think you were using a non-regulated supply. You need a regulated supply to kill the hum

Loose patchcables are annoying. They drive me crazy every so often. Think I will needs a shrink, when I start playing with ’LittleBits Korg’. But what really bugs me: “No Aftertouch‘’ . ;-)

From looking at that without having the joy of using it, it looks really really cheaply made for £100. I mean the oscillator broke the second it was taken out of the box. That speaker is a stock part you find in foldable iPod docks in poundland. That combined with not being able to use midi seems like it'd get boring pretty quickly unless you spend even more money... Can you at least use the mixer to have two signals going with the oscillators so you can have a drum going at the same time as a lead?
@baphomick9 жыл бұрын
***** On the bright side, they will quickly ship you a new Oscillator at no charge. One of mine was also broken.

It's not digital. It's analog, so infinite voices in theory.

None of the kits include that pegboard and side pieces. They show as "coming soon" on their site. US kits came just like yours.
@sdero49910 жыл бұрын
I was a little upset that you didn't try it out with other LittleBits because that's the whole second part of the kit. It's not just Korg, it's LittleBits compatible and I wanted to see how well you could use it with other LittleBits at least for the voltage parts.

Like playing dominoes but with cheaply made audio parts. This is selling where I come from for approx $170 USD and this could be spent towards a Volca, Brute or something else... I think if one had several boxes of these modules then more fun could be had. Also given that it's open source expect to see heaps of knock off versions. There's the Trinity and one other which has full midi capability
@this_connor_guy10 жыл бұрын
That's a neat little device. I wouldn't get one, myself, but it's still a neat thing. I feel like there's gonna be a trading card sort of thing with this like you buy a deck and then buy booster packs, but with little synth bits.
@ebmmdawguy10 жыл бұрын
Instantly makes you want to mess with it, You could 3d print clips to hold the modules together better and you could get the connector those splitter boards use and solder some header pins on to intercept the CVs. I think the guys who will get the most value are those with a bit of electronics experience who've never done anything with audio before. Fun, if a little pricey.

I just can't get excited about this. For a toy, yes it is some toy alright but for a synth it needs hard wiring really in some intelligent way. A good educational tool for kids or novices who are interested.

The best that you can buy some other not musical Littlebits and make a deep exploration. They ve got motors, sensors, operators like "OR", "AND", LED panels, microphones etc. It just something like an art installation, you shouldnt perciept this kit just like a synthesizer.

I like the concept but it looks pretty fragile.

maybe i'd get one for $30. maybe. its looks cheaply made and that speaker looks like junk. you manage to breadboard this unit up? if not you should be able to just attract some sort of conductive piece onto the end contacts to point 90degrees downward. then just be aware of how your breadboard is laid out

nice review, your vid cuts out a bit at 10:25 but it's ok link to the github,.. is here: github.com/littlebitselectronics/eagle-files i've looked at some of the files,.. osc is their own i think filter is a lm13700 variant delay is pt2399 so it is kind of common,.. but they have done something with the voltage to get it to work..as you said the signal may be able to go into a rack (maybe),.. i wouldn't put any outputs from the rack into the little bits though price is reasonable i guess maybe a little high considering you can get a volca for less,.. but it's good for kids and learning
