I know the Sonne’s won’t be reading this after the first posting 2 years ago, but of all the videos you have shared with us, this is the one that I go back to most often and brings tears to my eyes. My grandfather walked behind his mule, Bessie, plowing 2 rows at a time farming cotton in Wellington, Texas. The aerials of your tilled field are a beautiful sight and one I wish he could have experienced. I wish I knew the model of John Deere he ended up with before he left us in 1972 because he thought he was farming in a Cadillac. (you have to be older than 50 to appreciate that one). Thank you Brian and Cole for loving the smell of that freshly turned soil as much as he, my uncle, and I do. You’re stuck with a forever fan.

It's funny...my first thought when you put the camera on the chisel plow was "he needs to turn the top link out a bit. Back shanks are barely digging." I miss farming with my dad so much. You guys fill that void. Thank you!

My most satisfying workdays on the farm were the days I plowed. I could look back at the field when I finished and say to myself, “I sure can see what I accomplished today.” Good feeling.

Love the drone shots of the fields being chiseled, long straight rows of tilled earth ( I know, auto steer, but still looks great ). You didn't say why Dad thought you were doing a "bad job" ... looked great to me (don't forget I lived 78 years in the city ). Also love the old stories with dad... $800 for a chisel bought 38 years ago and is still going strong today. I'd say that was a good investment. 🚜 🚜 🚜 🌽🌽🌽🌽🌽🚜 🚜 🚜

Something really satisfying about breaking land. Whether by plow or chisel it just looks so good after you make a pass and all you see is black soil. One of the car manufactures decided it was a good idea to use soya based insulation in their wiring harnesses. The squirrels love them. Perhaps J.D. does as well. Great video Thanks.

I still see a lot of Moldboard Plowing going on in the Southern Tier of Western New York. Things sure have Changed since I worked on the Farm Back in the Late '50's and early '60's. Back then the Norm was Plow, drag and Disc. Generally a 2 bottom Plow. So you knew your day was going to be spent in the field. Cole, I've watched a lot of Farm Videos and I Keep coming Back to Sonne Farms, Because you speak So Clear and enunciate you words. These other folks could use a Lesson in Diction And clarity. Some of them sound Like the Pooh wound up in their Mouth. Brain, I Love your Stories, Even though they're not as old as I am They're still Great!! Keep 'em comin' !!

We bought a horse farm in Jan. Decided to cut our own hay. After two Tractors and a baler, it was only fun the first two times. Not it's just hard work. People are buying they hay since we cut square bales for show horses. Show horses are stabled, so need sq bales. Pleasure horses eat round bales in pasture. We had so much rain we have a ton of hay. Cutting again Weds. Hopefully, the last cut this year.

As a kid growing up in rural Indiana, in the summer/fall you were farming. I got $1.35 an hour and drove a 1977 John Deere 4440 open cab pulling a grain bin, bush hog or chisel, spreader or plow. And it was just like you did here. I would do the perimeter first, then go rock hunting. It also had the front bucket attachment. I would hit a rock, pull it out with the chisel and then load it into the bucket. Sun up to sundown. In the fall I would pull a triple grain cart train. Countless hours. But I loved it. That 4440 was a strong work horse.

Your spring tooth harrow is comprised of "teeth" (not shoes). Hard work well done. It's a pleasure to watch. I'm amazed you don't have to plow it first after 10 years fallow.

I used to follow alfalfa with two years of corn, then, beans, and, then back to small grain as a nurse crop, with more alfalfa for the next three or so years. That rotation worked pretty good. I moldboard plowed the alfalfa, and, the corn, then chiseled the bean ground.

You have an awesome dad man he seems like an amazing guy love his stories of the ole days and by the way the older a piece of equipment is usually it’s built like a brick shit house and the better it is built to last like that chisel you are pulling I don’t think they make equipment like that anymore it’s built so you have to spend money on it which is where these companies Mark it up

Fun video. Good you guys record how it happens, as so many of us don't know farm life. I loved from ID to DaytonO in 1983. That years some of the corn didn't even get into tassel and the soybeans (first time I'd ever seen them) didn't even get harvested they were so bad. The next year, different story - lush green everywhere :) Maybe your dad's comment about year and 7bu/acre were also 83 ? Thanks for feeding America. And culling out those errant steers.

Great job Cole. That patch looks like a garden. We had an Allis Chalmers chisel somewhat like that one, only you tugged it with the draw bar and ran the height from a remote. About the same width and offset on the shanks. I like that one being on the category hitch. Not sure ours wouldn't have broke a shank or two moving along like you did. Cheers.

That's one of those Minnesota Covid short hopper frogs. Died on the migration to greener pastures and food. Sure brings up some nice looking black soil.

Hi Guys great video again 👍🏻 ! Your right Brian in 1982 most ppl in eastern South Dakota hadn’t seen fields of soybeans . Unless you were right along the very eastern boarder. Soybeans didn’t start until 1984 when everything was so wet that it got to late to plant corn . That’s when lots of ppl started planting soybeans . I can remember ppl still planting beans the 4th of July in 1984 . And with the change over to soybeans now you really have to look when you see a field of oats planted. Up until 1984 most of those soybean acres were growing oats !

I love to plow. It is so great to give the soil fresh air and to see it up and soft and the roots of whatever you plant are more free to move down deep for moisture in dryer times of summer. Very important for the sandy loam plateau, I live on, (Sand Mtn). I wished I was able to farm full time, like you. It is a blessing for you to be able to carry on, what your dad and granddad have been doing for years. I am working on about 30 acres, right now, that hasn't been tilled in 40 years. I should have chiseled it first. I turned it with the turning plow and now I am beating myself up in the tractor, trying to use the disk harrow on it. God's speed.

@@bradrichardson8062 It was the only way to get the broom grass to stop growing. I had to turn it under a use a harrow on it and resow good orchard grass, red clover, bit of lespadeza in the mix. I tried lime, calcium and fertilizing. Ph was so out for so long. Some of the fescue came back but the broom (sage) grass had the soil so root bound the other good grasses didn't have a chance. I guess I could have sprayed killer on it but chose to plow it under, instead. It felt good getting rid of it. It was a sure win for me.

LAURA FARMS has just showed a piece of equipment that seemed to do an excellent job of preparing some acreage for Planting. It has rotating like spikes that turned over the old bean acreage soil and left it ready for planting. Just a thought

Your dad forgetting to put the harrow down is like something I would do. Lol, giving that field a couple years off from alfalfa will make all the difference. Great video and look forward to soybean harvest

We've always called those pieces on the end of the chisels the "points" and they get rotated quite a bit, but I suppose that'll happen after 100 or so acres on the smaller ones. Beefier points we had started using a while back would give us somewhere in the 200 to 250 acre range before needing replaced.
