Charles L. "Sonny" Liston (unknown - December 30, 1970) was an American professional boxer who competed from 1953 to 1970. A dominant contender of his era, he became world heavyweight champion in 1962 after knocking out Floyd Patterson in the first round, repeating the knockout the following year in defense of the title; in the latter fight he also became the inaugural WBC heavyweight champion. Liston was particularly known for his toughness, formidable punching power, and intimidating appearance.

His jab is magic because that guy is 1,85m in height but has a arm length like fury xD. It's hard to tell when you in the right distance. Many felt comfy and far away enough and bam the telephone pole jab comes out of nowhere!

Without even a questionable doubt. Today's champs have to take steroids to even get half the strength of Sonny Liston.

@@kantovagrant3194 This is why I laugh whenever someone says that Eddie hall or Thor bjornsson are the worlds strongest men. I mean they're definitely strong, much much stronger than the average man, they're professional strongmen after all. But then we don't know whether or not they took steroids. And their greatest feat was deadlifting 500kg off the ground for only one rep. I'm not taking anything away from them, but George foreman lifted that exact weight in a cow on his shoulders and exercised with it like it was nothing. And this was a time when steroids were unknown in combat sports. Really makes you think how strong these legends of boxing really are.

It has been reported that Sonny was possibly born in 1919 which would have made him 44 (older than Marciano). Everything about Sonny was a mystery and begs the question if only ?

Beaten up daily in childhood.... Went to city sent to jail... Never recognised by the ppl to be the real champ... Lost the the title to ali... As soon as he won from flyod patterson... I think He never had luck on his side.. But what a boxer.... ya what a boxer!!!

Fantastic fighter and should be up there with the all time greats. Ali never KOd a fighter in the 1st round either before or after this so do not be kidded into thinking he knocked out Sonny in the 1st. Sonny was terrified of the black Muslims and threw himself on the deck. Watch the fight?

joeycard17 Facts not opinion. Not saying Ali would not have won only that he would not have won in this fashion. Watch the 2nd Ali vs Liston fight and then say Ali KOd Liston when he could not do this to any other fighter in the 1st round. Liston was involved with the mob, and most TV pundits and the paper's were suspicious at the time. Even Ali screamed at Sonny to get up.

Agreed that he bailed on the second fight, but he wasn't going to beat Ali. He matched up poorly against Ali and was already aging, in his mid 30's.

Ovik2k Thankyou, good to hear a like minded person. Nobody knew Sonny's age , (definately older than recorded )and indeed he was a complex character, although not given the respect he deserved and all in all a sad story ! Several years after Ali, Sonny had George Foreman as a sparring partner and Big George stated he was the hardest hitter. Sonny Liston, A Man ( gravestone ) RIP. For me, at his peak, he was almost unbeatable !

I love Ali. He is a master boxer with the biggest heart. But Sonny was neither unable to fight in the 1st nor the 2nd fight against Ali. The punch was too weak for one thing and it usually took opponents such as Muhammed a series of punches to knock somebody out. Sonny on the other hand wasnt the guy to drop after a single shot. Not to mention his controversial involvements outside the ring and the political scene at that time. Neither Liston nor Muhammed were alone. They both represented the people they were part of. Even if Sonny went down he didnt hear the refs count nor did others. All in all the case is just too strange to be believed naively. Dont forget Sonnys death which was controversial to say the least.
