Within sight of his centenary, Sonny Rollins is one of the last jazz musicians of his generation, a direct and precious connection to the history of the music. Possessed of a drive and work ethic that few could rival, 'Newk' held and continues to hold himself to the highest standard. He wears with dignity and honor the title of living legend, one of the greatest tenor saxophonists of all time, a giant among giants. Sonny's legacy is too big to be contained in one episode, so the story will continue in Jazz History #55.

I was privileged to see Sonny in the UK many years ago. Just in a quartet, so it was basically all Sonny all night. What I remember most was his encore - 20 minutes playing every song with goodbye in the title you can imagine, never repeated a phrase. He must have had the sax on his face for 15 minutes straight but never ran out of new ideas. What an extraordinary musician.

He was famous for that kind of thing. There was a contest on his website a few years back to see who could identify all the quotes in a cadenza.

My favorite Sonny Rollins story is how he leaned into his resemblance to Don Newcombe

Thus his nickname. I think it is in part two that Jimmy Heath relates the story.
