Sonny Rollins will go down in history as not only the single most enduring tenor saxophonist of the bebop and hard bop era, but also as one of the greatest contemporary jazz saxophonists of them all. His fluid and harmonically innovative ideas, effortless manner, and easily identifiable and accessible sound have influenced generations of performers, but have also fueled the notion that mainstream jazz music can be widely enjoyed, recognized, and proliferated.

1:39 "jazz is a force of nature, it's a feeling, it's a sense of liberation, sense of communing with nature, with higher, an abandon of your spirit, a sense of hope that life can be better, that things can be better, it's a sense of happiness ..."

I saw Sonny several times between 1972 and 2000. He never failed to leave me exhausted from sheer amazement at the power and beauty of his music. He'll always be my favorite tenor sax player. As much as I love Coltrane, Sonny is my guy.

Never will I forget Sonny, I met him back in 1988, and I got his autograph, and sadly, some how I lost it, his message to me was, signed, "keep blowing Sonny Rollins", and I never learned how to play jazz, I am forever haunted by the fact that I never completed my goal, this was my hero, and I let him down. Maybe one day I will pick up a Saxophone again. I still have the ticket stub from 1988, this is my Sonny Rollins story.

I saw him live at the Hollywood Bowl in the seventies. He was on the bill with all my favorites, Peterson, Ella, SuperSax, many more. But Sonny was outstanding that evening. His playing just...does it for me. I love this guy.

Thank you so much for this! He's a beautiful person..a COMPLETE human being because he has addressed his spiritual side as well as his physical. Some musicians fake it but Sonny is for real. Totally connected.

Heard Sonny at Carnegie Hall in '89 and he played for 3 hours straight without a break!!! And each tune was more intense than the last and ended in an explosion. And after the concert the whole audience was high for hours afterward off the experience. Something going on there beyond the music.

Jazz is a force of nature. I can hear the sounds of earth moving in rhythm and feel the wind blowing sometimes it's genital and sometimes it's hard. When the wind is just right, I hear the birds coming to eat and I get excited about the fish then after it's on the hook i exhale.

@MCgoogles1000 he could be trying to say that in previous lives when there was no emanicipation for his people in particularly the african / carribean they was no chance of absolute freedom for expression, there was no voice, in this life since his birth there is the opportunity since freedoms were denied previous, there is the chance now to express and voice concerns and discuss and state through music, he does it perfectly.
