Brenden Schaeffer breaks down the Cardinals 5-3 win over the Giants from Sunday, June 23, 2024 at Busch Stadium.
Sonny Gray was perfect through 6.2 innings before that ended in a relatively emphatic way... But he was still elite in another seven-inning performance that paved the way for a Cardinal winner.
Is Oli Marmol pulling Sonny too early from these starts or are we just getting too wrapped up in an old-school definition of an ace that doesn't necessarily pay good attention to what it is that the Cardinals are seeking from Gray this year?
Plus, the offense deserves some flowers for the way a number of hitters are going about things lately, and for the way they approached the base running aspect of the game throughout this Giants series. There was a purpose to it, and it worked in STL's favor.

I love Sonny, Burly, Winn, and Donovan and the RPs! Goldie seems to be doing better. I hope some of the other players will up their game... and now it's on to the Braves, kind of scary considering we'll probably get Lynn as Pitcher today, but we will hope for the best. We need Contreras back!

Well reasoned argument regarding Gray. I've been frustrated with the last two outings of him being pulled but what you said makes a ton of sense

Thanks for this comment! I'm okay if folks don't agree with me! I just try to outline how I see it and I think it's how the team sees it too. They know how important it is to have him healthy and strong.

My heart hasn’t pounded as hard since that dodgers wild card game when sonny gray was throwing the perfect game.

Since 2019, Sonny Gray has only pitched into the 8th or later two times. He isn’t an innings eater
@Schwartz8288
@Schwartz8288 4 күн бұрын
So going 7 innings is not a innings eater, I guess you rather go into the bullpen in the 5th inning 🥱🥱🥱🥱
@Excitegaming0

If a pitcher records 6 innings pitched in every start for 32 starts that is 192 Innings. That would qualify as an “innings eater” A pitcher who pitches 8 innings every start for 32 starts equals 256 innings. Wanna know the last time someone threw that many innings? Roy halladay 2003 in 36 starts. Stop being so picky and negative.

You’re right yummy cheese. Gray is a good pitcher but not an innings eater. Plus it seems he usually falls off after 70-80

Which is just fine. He's effective at what he does, but forcing him to do other things isn't conducive to long-term success necessarily

I am typically “old school” when it comes to my pitching philosophy or preference. I would love to see more complete games in MLB and the TLR years “conditioned” me to anticipate 100 pitches thrown 3R or less over 6 to 7IP. Gray’s biggest asset to this Cardinals rotation is his leadership and accountability which has been visible since spring training. Keep him healthy and strong down the stretch. Q: is this a year where STL will have more pitchers contending for an All Star roster spot than position players? Bring on the Braves!
@bschaeffer12
@bschaeffer12 4 күн бұрын
Id say yes it is. Sonny is a contender. Helsley is a contender. Whereas position players might just be Winn? Maybe Burly as a late addition? I think more pitchers have better odds.

Finally, another sweep. I have no problem with Sonny coming out of the game. It was hot as hell yesterday and the humidity saps you. It's a damn fine feat that through seven he was elite in that heat. Everything feels like it's starting to click at the right time. Now Mo needs to jump on a few moves to help fortify and sustain the momentum. Burly and Donovan are going to surprise some people by year's end.

CONGRATULATIONS to Ryan for becoming the all time leader in consecutive saves. He looked back on the beam today.. 🎉Sonny was outstanding, and not giving him the 8th almost bit us. Thinking the Cardinals will have arrived by winning the Braves series. Go Birds on the Bat. Huge insurance run provided by Dylan and ex Giant Crawford. Must of felt great. If Gorman can join the party.........

Totally agree w/your take on the handling of Sonny. Seven innings off one run ball on a day hot as balls in St Louis.....was painting the inside of garage after the game and it was still oppresive heat. I'll take that perfeomance every 5 days and yes do save some bullets on the $75 million asset. No need to run a starters into the ground this early for sure.

I think taking the division is going to be easier than taking the top spot in the wild card. Sounds a little crazy but I could see the Brewers more likely to fade than the Braves. We can do something about the Brewers but not much about the Braves. Sony Gray knows when he is finished. Know idea whether he wanted to come out or not. I do know that after watching 60 years of baseball and playing a lot, that the manager can dictate the outcome of around 5% of the 162 games by making smart moves. My hearing is not great anymore but I hear nothing wrong with the quality listening to you.

Honestly, i am glad h.e is getting to play everyday. I've always liked him as a hitter. I am ready trade Goldschmidt and give the job to Burly. I know that the coaches are preaching launch angles and stuff, but I think this team is built better for small ball, hit n run, and some good old fashioned make contact. Decent defense, better than average pitching, great bullpen. We just need our middle of the order to produce. Time to move Gorman down in the order until he figures it out.

Yay! Burly is like 18th in HR 14, 17th in OPS. Hate it that YT takes 30% of your revenue, would rather send you an occasional Cash App stipend like I did in Spring Training. Much appreciate your hard work and energy posting these. Feel bad for fans not watching, they’re missing the #1 Best Cards coverage!

You think of a starting pitcher like a marathon not a sprint. 7 innings is 7 innings, maybe they work on the endurance to stretch him out if they get to October. But looking at his IP history it’s not something you want to just force. That’s how injuries happen

I know they swept the Giants Yea! However, lets talk the reality of this team; Gorman.194, Carlson .198 Crawford .196 Pages .155 Goldy .231 Carp .231. Only Winn, Burley, and Donovan are hitting. How does this lineup do in a wild card setting? Our outfield is still the weakest offense in the league. We have 2 starting pitchers that are doing well. Gray and Gibson, Pallante- maybe. People are talking about how Arizona snuck in last yr and won it all. They had much better pitching than the Cards ( and better hitting). Yes, we have had some key hits at the top of the lineup recently, but if the rest of the team cant hit then do they even make it to the wild card?? final note JJ and Kitt have struggled recently, are they getting tired?
