Some tips regarding setting up a Zigbee network (also in an upcoming video about Zigbee devices): - Use a USB extension cable with the Sonoff Dongle, especially if you use an SSD. Interference from the Pi can considerably reduce your range. - If you have any Zigbee light bulbs (e.g. Philips Hue) or mains switches, pair these first in the rooms they're intended for. As these aren't battery-powered, they're generally routing devices. This helps to strengthen your network. - Pair the sensors in their final location. These will then pair with the nearest Zigbee router, such as a light bulb, already on the network. - Keep an eye on battery levels of your sensors. This is normally one of the statistics reported by the sensor. Maybe set up an automation to alert you (BeardedTinker has a recent video on how to do this), or create a separate dashboard with battery levels. Keep a note of what type of battery they use and hold a small stock of them.

TIP: If you have the "E" version dongle, don't forget to put "adapter: ezsp" in serial section in the Z2M configuration file. "P" version dongle doesn't require this.

Really brilliant tutorial for dummies thank you. Spent an age trying to work out how to do this. In the meantime my home set up had an "event" that sent all my devices offline and left a recurring error in the log to the effect that I was using an insecure default Zigbee2 MQTT network key. Couldnt find any intel on the forums. Anyway I need to scratch the Z2M itch and this is perfect. Just like your Sonoff flashing tutorial. I wasted a day on it before stumbling across your excellent videos. Kudos! will coffee you later. Just thought I had to thank you first on here. One thing though. Why isn't there a place where the network key can be configured not to use the default? Oops! May have posted this in the wrong vid.

hi there , I have been playing with homeassistant and have built some ESP32 nodes to monitor temperature and control things like pumps. ive got the ESP 32 node reading the temp and humidity and also i configured four outputs to drive relays for running pumps and vents.., the one thing i found after purchasing a Zigbee Dongle was getting the zigbee2mqtt to work , what a nightmare. after watching countless videos i came across your channel , i went through it first just watching the procedure a few times . after many frustrating times with other video where i got nowhere. Then today i sat with your instructions and followed to the letter , i must say your instructions are first class , i got it working !!. it was like jumping through fired HOOPS with all the other videos out there . I would like to buy you a drink for an excellent tutorial . I'm trying to get to grips with Node red . I have two large polly tunnels and want to look after the temperatures and water the plants since i'm growing quite a lot of HOT chillies . I can build the hardware using ESp32 8266 etc and have them controlling things, ive extended my WiFi to cover the whole Garden and its very big, to make sure i can control the devices im going to build , ive worked out how to control vents on my polytunnes using a ESP32. so it just getting to grips with Nodered in home assistant for automation. Im a pretty technical person and can work out most thing but this got me spitting feathers.... Iv'e installed file editor, Grafana, Hacs, Influxdb,NodeRed,Studio code server, terminal ssh ,zigbee2mqtt now ill put my first Ziggbee sensor on the fridge door since the wife plays hell with me leaving it open. in some NODE red instructions there is the need to read temperature and humidity , im using the DHT22 , but when i try to add the device to the dashboard i complains with a Fail. seems it need some libraries , so this is my next thing to fix , i want to use NodeRed to read these devices and do an automation on running fans water pumps etc. so if you know a fix for this a video in that area would be super. i'm retired and just plying with technology , im quite good at building stuff and an active radio ham. I can bounce signal off the moon but that Zigbee set up had me spiting feathers.... I have joined you £5 Patreon ... once again your the Man ...

Thank you for this video! I have HA, but I am not a computer wiz, and I really need things explaining and showing to me like I'm a toddler. I find a lot of the HA documentation, Github documentation and the HA forums way too complicated (and often quite hostile towards newbies with newbie questions!). I'm wanting to install Zigbee and Zigbee2MQTT, so I'm doing a lot of reading and prep work for it, just so I know what to face when I finally dare to take the leap. This video helps calm my nerves, and I'll have it guide me through it step by step when I get to that point! So far, it looks pretty straightforward (famous last words...).

somewhat helpful but a few things are still confusing. At 3:32 the part about the server. You state to make it the Home Assistant IP address. But what about the port after the iP. should that match the home assistant as well? or use the one shown. Then the next step about tying in terminal. I don't have terminal on my Home assistant? that seems like a whole other video on how to add that option. Sorry new to this and a bit lost

Thank you for your video. I have setup my home network without problems. Just a quick question, if the battery of a sensor is running dry, what should you do after putting a new battery in? My homeassistant couldnt discover the sensor after the battery replacement and i had to re-pair the sensor again.
@SmartHomeAddict
@SmartHomeAddict 2 жыл бұрын
That's odd, normally after changing the battery there should be nothing else to do. I've changed batteries in all types of sensors without issue. For pairing both Z2M and the device should exchange information and this will remain until it's removed. Is this an Aqara sensor? This has been known to happen with Aqara / Xiaomi sensors sometimes as seen here: www.zigbee2mqtt.io/devices/RTCGQ11LM.html

@@cyrusho2797 I've been trying to get hold of the FP1 but without success so far. Very keen to try it out, as it would solve a problem I currently have - my daughter often leaves her room with all the lights on and motion sensors don't really work well (if she stays still in her room the light would turn off). Hopefully Aqara see how popular it is and release it worldwide soon. As soon as I can get my hands on one, I'll do a combined review/setup video.

So I currently use the Sonoff 3.0 USB Dongle with ZHA...I find sometimes that because of the distance between my dongle and the (let's say) light in the bathroom, it doesn't pick up the light in the "Add device" of the Sonoff Zigbee integration. Will using this method of yours with Z2MQTT be better? I have very strong wifi signal in entire home, but feel a bit short changed on the distance I'm getting with my Zigbee devices and this 3.0 dongle. Thanks again :)
@SmartHomeAddict
@SmartHomeAddict 2 жыл бұрын
Z2MQTT won't make the signal stronger, there's possibly some other reason. Most often, the reason for range issues can be related to interference affecting the strength of the signal. If you're using an SSD, this sometimes affects this to a greater extent. Is your dongle plugged directly into the computer (Pi or other)? Try a USB extension cable, it doesn't have to be long, just enough to move it away from the Pi. Although you're getting good Wifi, these are different technologies. Wifi normally uses higher transmit power, Zigbee is designed to be low power allowing the use of battery devices such as sensors. It may also be worth looking into perhaps putting another mains powered Zigbee device in a room between the dongle and the bathroom bulb. Mains operated Zigbee devices often act as routers, which will extend the range reachable.
@leighrieder3717
@leighrieder3717 2 жыл бұрын
@@SmartHomeAddict Thank you for the prompt response. The dongle is connected directly into the Pi 3B with a 1,5m extension cable. You mention adding additional Zigbee devices to act as routers....am i able to possibly add a 2nd Zigbee dongle into my Wifi6 router (node) which is more centralised than my primary router?.....or would the dongle HAVE to be plugged into a Pi or computer? I actually do have a 2nd dongle so if I could make use of that then that would be great

@SmartHomeAddict
@SmartHomeAddict 2 жыл бұрын
It needs to be connected to whatever device you're running Home Assistant on (or openHAB or similar). It needs to be 'driven' by that computer, it has no ability to run independently of it. I'd recommend using a USB extension to avoid interference. If you're having range issues, a mains powered Zigbee device (for instance a lightbulb or mains socket) will act as a repeater in your Zigbee network.

Is there a dongle device connected to an Internet router so that Zigbee end devices work through it? without a physical server at home. How is it possible to use only cloud zigbee server?
@SmartHomeAddict
@SmartHomeAddict 2 жыл бұрын
There's no dongle as such that will connect directly into an Internet router. There are two ways round this, a device such as the Hubitat hub (UK - amzn.to/3bWdUlq, US - amzn.to/3Rk5rc8) or Smartthings (UK - amzn.to/3Rk5rc8, US - amzn.to/3Rk5rc8) which contain both Zigbee and ZWave would work and would connect using ethernet to your router. Alternative, setting up Home Assistant on a Raspberry Pi with a Zigbee dongle.

I got a similar issue, here is how I fixed it. I've gotten the new revision model ZBDongle-E, described as: "Sonoff Zigbee 3.0 USB Dongle Plus (EFR32MG21)". Zigbee2MQTT is currently not able to automatically choose the right way to communicate to version "E" of the stick , so I had to instruct it to do this. Instead of > port: /dev/... you configure it to use the ezsp adapter, as in: > adapter: ezsp > port: /dev/... After this (and refresh) I got it to show "Connecting to MQTT server at ..." and the rest of the video was easy to follow.
