Dustin, nice review. And as always, thanks and know it's appreciated. I compared the 100-400mm w/ the 200-600mm several months back and ended up going with the latter, as I do a lot of wildlife shooting and birding. I have since added the 1.4TC to my kit and really love the extended reach on the A9 without sacrificing the PDAF.

I must say that i really enjoy your videos. I find it particular useful when you compare the lenses towards alternatives and suggest other options and combos like in this video where you mention the 70-200 + 200-600 as an alternative. I recently purchased the 100-400GM myself and i really like it. I also have the 70-200GM that i was planning to sell but these two lenses have different qualities so looks like im keeping both. I was also considering the 70-200+200-600 combo but the smaller size of the 100-400 won me over. The sharpness of this lens really surprised me. My 70-200GM really is sharp but the 100-400GM is outstanding. Another big plus for me with the 100-400 is the close focus ability. I have used it on several hikes as a combined tele and macroish lens, works greats and allows you to get very different images without having to swap lenses.

It's a very useful review, thanks! About G and GM designation: I've heard from Sony that in order to make 100-400mm lens more compact and lightweight they had to use more advanced and expensive materials. Kind of materials they generally use for GM glass. For 200-600 Sony engineers had fewer restrictions regarding size and weight so that allowed them to create a cheaper lens with similar optical performance.

Thanks for the excellent review Dustin. I rented the 200-600 and the 100-400 to compare. I found both lenses were excellent for image quality and AF capture & speed. But I went with the 100-400. I find the 100-400 to be a more useful range, but for me the weight and portability issues were significant. I also bought the 1.4TC and if you are so inclined perhaps you could do a review of that TC on these long lenses? I shoot with the A7R4 and a Nikon D500. The Sony equipment is my new experiment and so far it doesn’t disappoint.

Thanks for the review. I have the Sigma 100-400 mounted via MC11 on my A7R3 and previously A73. For more static subjects it's great and very portable. If it comes out in FE mount or a similar Tamron lens that would be perfect. The Sony 100-400 sure is a huge price premium for what appears a modest gain unless shooting lots of fast action.

One thing I didn't hear you bring up specifically in the comparison of the 100-400 vs 200-600 is the minimum focusing distance, for me it's the main reason I'd grab the 100-400 on a hike over the 200-600, it can work like a macro in a pinch. Also the big primes don't focus close at all, if you shoot birds like I do from a hide that can be a real issue if you want maximum detail.

Great summation as usual Dustin. I agree whole heartedly, the 200-600 G is the best superzoom on the planet. I have both btw and they each have their place. I am a Canon guy since the mid 70's and have a lot of Canon gear and recently I have moved sideways to Sony and I believe their Autofocus system is superior to Canon, as my critical hit rate is so much better. The eye AF for humans and animals on my a9II is simply amazing with the 100-400/200-600. Pixel peeping between brand lenses is irrelevant when you get suburb accurate AF in the real world.

Nice video Dustin! I’m an A7R2 user. I shoot landscapes, portraits and wildlife. The A7R2 does amazing for landscapes but eye AF for portraits is hit or miss. Also the AF for moving objects is not so good. My longest is lens is the 100-400 with a 1.4 TC. I will most likely add the 200-600 one day. Is there a one camera solution for me? If so, which one? A7R3A, A7R4a? Or is keeping the A7R2 and getting a A9 a better choice. I don’t shoot a lot of fast action so sometimes I think the A7R4a would be ideal for the extra reach with wildlife. However, the large file sizes seem to be overkill for landscape and portraits. Suggestions? Thanks.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 2 жыл бұрын
I haven't had a chance to review one, yet, but on paper the new a7IV might be a good fit. A more moderate file size but excellent AF. The RIIIa is the good value pick here. It's AF is not as good as the RIV or a7IV, but it's still very good.

Great review as per usual. Would be nice to see a comparison video between this and the Sigma 100-400. I'm looking to buy one of them and for 2,5 times the price I'm hard pressed to buy this one over the Sigma.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 3 жыл бұрын
I didn't have them at the same time, but you're right - it is hard to argue for the GM at 2.5x the price, even though on the margins it is the better lens. Not sharper, per se (and I think the Sigma has nicer bokeh), but the GM wins for slightly better AF, better magnification, build, etc...

Dustin, thanks for your great review. As a wildlife photographer I am considering moving to Sony system. I would like to ask your opinion about the best Sony combo for wildlife photography: a9 + 200-600? a7RIV + 200-600? other combo? It would be very interesting if you make a comparison between the 100-400 and the 200-600 lenses.
@DustinAbbottTWI
@DustinAbbottTWI 4 жыл бұрын
Hi Antonio, I've covered both lenses now, so a direct comparison is unlikely at this point. The RIV is a very interesting option for wildlife if you don't need to capture action as much because of the deep cropping/APS-C mode. If you want high frame rate to stop action, the a9 is the way to go.
@ajcaiado1
@ajcaiado1 4 жыл бұрын
@@DustinAbbottTWI thanks for your answers. I understood that the AF system of the a9 is fantastic in acquiring and locking the focus. That's essencial for a sharp photo of an animal. As animals are usually moving, is the a7RIV capable of doing the same? What's the use of having a 61MP camera to allow heavy cropping if the image is not sharp due to poor focus? If you were a wildife photographer and you canoot afford to have both cameras, which one would you choose: the a7RIV or the a9?

DxoMark gives the lens 36 in sharpness on a A7RII while the Canon scores only 24 in sharpness on a 5DSr. Having owned both lenses I too could not see any special difference between them. I really hope this isn't related to individual lens variations for such pricy items.

Don't read too much into DXO's rankings - they have a somewhat odd system where they don't rank the lens performance independent of the camera it's attached to. The same Sigma or Tamron lens, for example, will have a much higher ranking on Nikon than on Canon. They have a real anti-Canon bias for some reason that borders on the ridiculous.

I can't speak for GM lens, but the o-ring on my G lens barely touches the the mount on the body. Sony puts it there for appearance, not functionality.

Great review, very happy that you also put it up against the Canon for comparison. I think the biggest topic ever is people choosing between the Sony 100-400 and the 200-600, I bought the 100-400 first and found myself nearly always using it at 400mm so for wildlife the 200-600 just works out better. Amazing how similar they are, I do wonder if canon makes an RF series zoom of that range how it will compare.

That will be interesting, as Canon hasn't tackled anything in that range yet.

Dustin, the green word "definitive" in the caption to the video has wrong spelling. Doesn't affect great content anyway :)

If you are a Sony user, It doesn't matter what Canon does. Focus breathing is a big issue on the Canon. I am very happy with my 100-400GM.

Unfortunately wherever he said contrast was better for Sony, all I see is just Canon producing a cleaner and more clear picture with details much more easy to be picked out/read by my eyes. But I can tell the difference here is so small you can call them insignificant. This is much better than what 720 GM has to offer for anything landscape related.

Quite a nice feature that the Sony is better at 70mm than the Canon. Given the fact that these are 100-400mm lenses. 😜

Amazing review thank you very much. You were way too nice to the sony lens tho, can clearly see at my 27inch 2k monitor at 4k in youtube that canon is actually sharper through out the range. Especially at 400 where the difference is night and day. at 200 you are even comparing the canon at f5 vs sony at f5.6 which should give slight advantage to the sony. Im blown away by the canon, i aways though the sony 100-400GM is the king of 100-400 since is the newest kid on the block. Thank you, again. Great job as usual. A review of a lens really becomes so much more meaningful when you not only shooting the reviewed lens at brick wall by it self, because we are looking at photos that have no meaning by it self until you compare to another lens. Please keep it this way aways, im not even shooting sony but enjoy checking out your videos especially a video like this one with real comparison.

Nikon really seems to have Sony beat here with a straight 5.6 200-500mm lens. The Sony 100-400 and 200-600 hit that max aperture so quickly it's almost pointless to have a variable aperture. Not to mention the Nikon has them beat on price. Other than that the Sony's do seem like great performers.

Where the 200-500 can't compete is in the tracking ability, however (only, perhaps, if you were pairing it with a $6000 body).
