The anamorphic lens looked awesome. Sony did a nice job in marking 200mm sharper than 70mm. That’s usually not the case

That's due to the characteristics of anamorphic - it varies from different anamorphic systems on the level it squeezes the face

That lens i think has a 1.8x squeeze, the video looks like is was only desqueezed by 1.6x or something like that

Glad to see a new 70-200mm GM in the lineup. I dropped the 24-70mm GM and 70-200mm GM from my kit years ago because they were so big and heavy. Hopefully a new 24-70mm GM will be coming soon.

@@BoyarsMedia I replaced them with the 24-105mm G and 70-200mm f4 G. Both excellent lenses. Lighter, but a bit slower. I no longer have either of those lenses, although I'd recommend both for home and travel. For zooms I currently have a 16-35mm GM and 100-400mm GM which covers that range. I also have the 50mm GM and 85mm GM if needed, but I rarely use them, since I mainly do landscape photography. One of my favorite lenses is the 135mm GM which I also use in crop mode or on my a6600 which makes it a 200mm lens.

The mk1 is hardly a bad lens, it's heavier with a tiny bit of corner softness wide open but will still be an excellent fast focusing, sharp where it's needed, work horse for those that use it professionally for weddings and events

I agree that Jordan did a great job with video on this review. I am not a SONY shooter but watch these because of the entertainment value and tips that are common with all image capture. Again great job Jordan.

Watch again! The old Sony was fourth in sharpness, behind Nikon, Canon and Panasonic. Chris only said this was sharper than the old Sony zoom!

Thank you for testing C-AF during rack zoom. This has historically been a major weaknessof mirrorless compared to DSLRs, maybe the only remaining one, but most of the DPReview review staff has completely ignored it.

Even if it's the same in terms of sharpness and AF speed/accuracy, the fact it went from 1,4 kg to 1 kg makes it a worthy upgrade.

Based on everything I've seen, this looks like one of the best e-mount lenses to come out in a while. I would love to see Sony knock 30% of the weight off their 24-70 for the next generation. It would be great if they started to price more competitively against other manufacturers. Especially with the 24-70 being double the price of Sigma's version, Sony could really come out strong with their new lenses dropping 30% in price as well as weight. Otherwise most of us will just be waiting for updates from Sigma and Tamron!

The lens hood looks absolutely identical to the RF 70-200. LOL It’s remarkable that 5 years ago the biggest complaint was “Sony didn’t have the lenses” and now they have so many that Sony is making Mark II versions of its older glass.

More the other way around, to be honest. The Sony 70-200 f/4 G's lens hood is also very similar, although without the filter adjustment hatch, and it came out clear back in 2014. Minolta had the door on 2003's A-mount 70-200mm F2.8 APO G D SSM hood.

@@ziginox actually, the other OTHER way around. Charles Chevalier invented the camera lens in the early 1800’s… haha That’s how ridiculous you sound when I read that Minolta put a door on a lens hood back in 2003 so Canon actually copied THEIR design…instead of the fact that Sony’s new 70-200 f/2.8 has a lens hood design that looks exactly like the lens hood from the Canon RF 70-200 f/2.8 from a couple years ago - that’s all I said. It wasn’t a history lesson.

I may be at a minority here, but I found the discrepancy between horizontal and vertical resolution quite jarring (talking about the anamorphic lens here, not the Sony). And the anamorphic squeeze seemed to vary between shots. I guess it is cinematic look, but it also gave it some sort of surveillance camera feel.

I have a sony a7 III and a panasonic S1R, I hesitate to buy a Sony FE 70-200mm F2.8 GM OSS II lens or a panasonic S 70-200 F 2.8, it is to take sports photos in night with correct lighting. Thank you

You know I was wondering if they were gonna come out with a version two of this lens but I went and picked up the tamron 70-180 and I don’t even touch it anymore ever since I picked up the Sony 135 mm GM. I used to like to use a 70-200 and use it at 200 mm for the compression and taking distracting things out of the photo but the 135 mm GM is on my camera 90% of the time. This lanes would have to be super bad ass for me to even consider it. It would have to be better than the 135 mm
