Last time I was shooting in shade with the Sigma 60mm 2.8, I found the lens often hunting, failing to acquire focus. I had lock-on AF and face detect both on. My focus area was also flexible spot and I was not always using the center focus point. Thanks to your video, I now know the reasons why the lens was hunting. Thanks.

FINALLY I figured this out!! Probably not rocket science for you pros out there, but for folks having trouble replicating this there's two absolutely critical things that need to be set. 1) The camera needs to be in manual mode (M) and 2) You have to be shooting in RAW format. Manually moving the ISO as David does in the video should change real-time on the screen. The only aspect I cannot figure out is I cannot "see" in dark areas as good as he can in the video. I still get no focus or AF won't play nice. I think this has to do with the lens he is using vs. the kit lens I have.

This is great video. Thanks. NOTE: **One other setting people may have to do when shooting in manual/low light/raw is to go to Menu / Settings / 2 / and change Live View Display to "Setting Effect OFF". This will give you the constant bright screen if you are getting a dark screen. (I used the kit 16-50 and this step along with the other video steps did the trick)

+Lavikka Photography -- Thanks for the video (nice job:)). I noticed some odd with my a6000 ... when I disable the setting effect and leverage my flash, the camera seems to pause for a couple of seconds before taking the picture. This seems to happen about 50% of the time (I am using the 18-55 kit lens). Any thoughts/suggestions?

I shoot with the Zeiss 24mm f/1.8 in Aperture priority and for a while there I was getting blurry shots too in some situations. I found out the reason was because I had set ISO manually. If you are getting blurry shots in full auto mode then I guess you really do have shaky hands but the shutter speed is usually fast enough to get a clean shot, especially when the lens is wide open.

Thanks for the great tips! I feel this works best with subjects that are relatively close. Do you have any tips for getting sharp focus on night time cityscape shots? I face issues of not having the subject lit enough to tell if it's in focus, and also that the manual focus ring is way too sensitive and doesn't seem to allow for subtle adjustments past 30m or so.

One quick question on that sigma 30 original version. (I hear the new Art version is not as Sharp). When you say it is 100% compatible, will it do the eye auto focus? I was guessing it didn't, but now I am not so sure? You have to set it to a custom button like AEL. Thanks and keep up the great videos!

+Chris Turner I think what is going on is when the camera shows "live view off" in the menu, this setting is actually turned "ON". The menu is not stating the current state of the setting, but rather what will happen if you select the option. If should be a checkbox or something because it is very confusing.

The sigma and all other third party lenses like the tamron 18-200 are not fully af hybrid compatible. The phase detection af only works when set to wide or zone and when the focus mode is set to continuous. Than you can see the little squares moving on the screen, but only in the center of the frame. So it is called wide mode but because it uses the phase detect system which is only supported in the centre you get center focus. With sony lenses they move all across the screen and you have a real wide mode. Because you have set it to centre af in this video you just get the contrast detection functionality with the 3rd party lenses. So no tracking/phase detect.
@LavikkaPhotography
@LavikkaPhotography 9 жыл бұрын
I would agree with you almost. With sigma lenses you are limited to the zone area but you can track and eye focus in center. It just won't move off of one center. I tested the Sony 30 Macro before the software upgrade and you can't even turn continuous focus on and according to sony, continuous focus is only enabled phase detection is enabled.
@2dL
@2dL 9 жыл бұрын
Lavikka Photography So I can't take pictures from a speeding motorcycle, since the continuous focus isn't going to work on other lenses? Did I get that right? If yes, what lenses wouldn't be able to do that?

Continuous focus works just fine.
@2dL
@2dL 9 жыл бұрын
Lavikka Photography But you said that the continuous focus is only enabled when phase detection is also enabled, and a lot of lenses don't have this feature. How can I know if a lens will support the hybride? Thanks
@LavikkaPhotography
@LavikkaPhotography 9 жыл бұрын
In the menu there are settings for af track speed and af track duration. If the lens is attached and the these functions can't be enabled then phase detection is not compatible with that lens.

I really appreciate all the tips you provide. Unfortunately, this tip isn't working for me. Using your exact settings (including turning Live view effects off & shooting in RAW with my Sony A6000 and a Sony SEL35F18 lens (shooting at 1.8 wide open), my screen is NO where near the brightness of yours. Not sure is a firmware update (am on ver. 2.0) is the reason. I even tried dropping my shutter speed from 1/50 down to 1/20 and the improvements are marginal.

Hi Davin thanks for all the great videos. I had a question about lens compatibility with the dynamic AF. I have the Sigma 19mm EX DN lens and I've upgraded to the latest firmware on my a6000 (v3.10). Hello Gary. First of all Thank You for ur technical videos. and I have a issue shooting pic with flash on with my a6300 and that is: while I am pressing shutter button all the way down, sometimes it's unable to shoot a pic , it is like hunting at that time but not shooting. and to work it properly I'm again turning off and on the camera then it's working properly for first few pics and again the same issue follows. Why is it happening? Please help me.

Good info. I see you have a shutter glidder when you chance the shutter (time 2:19 in you movie). Some others have also a aperture glider. I haven't a glider on my A6000? How can i get it? Can you help me. Is it the new firmware? When i chance my aperture or shutter only the numbers change, their is not a glider. Regards Frank

Lavikka Photography i used the a6000 at iso3200, its quite bad, not as bad as the nex 6. kind of a let down, as i was hoping that the iso performance would have been improved

So do I use this setting if I am shooting in low light outside? I'm going to Antelope Canyon in Page, AZ and I'm not sure what setting I should use on my camera. I have the a6000 with the kit lens.

+Diana Verso For that you are going to want to use a tripod and manual focus. Turn on peak focusing and set it to red and mid and use focus magnification. Practice in a hall way focusing half way down the hallway. They only let you in there during day light so it shouldn't be too hard. Shoot at f6.3 or f8 on a tripod it should be about 2 sec exposure if I remember right. Also try HDR mode. I you have to do it hand held which you may depending on the mood of the guide. ISO 800 at f6.3 should get you to 20th of a sec. Turn off skin smoothing. Hope this helps.

The AF on the 5100 isn't as fast as the a6000 but it should work.

Hi I'm using a Sony A6000 with a 16-50mm kit lens. I have set to AF-C, Face and lock on to off, live view effect off. When I set my ISO to eg.3200 or higher, the view still dark. I can't view the brightness like in your video...what am I missing? Thanks.

+Lavikka Photography ok I've reset to default settings of my Sony A6000. I've switched to Live View "On" from "Off". I even tried AF-S and AF-C mode, both worked. And now I can see the changing to higher ISO from low light scenes. Shutter speed set to 1/3. What's your shutter speed settings on the video? I didn't change to spot focusing, I'm still using wide focus. Thanks Lavikka Photography. Please do share more of your Sony A6000 tips.

my bf is a photographer and he is using D610 and he bought a A6000 to me for Christmas gift. He found out A6000 could not focus to face in indoor area. He want to know is A6000 low light AF only can focus not below EV 0 environment?

+Vicky Kam this is how you do it. and make sure live view effects are off. It should focus faster then the 610.

I'm not sure what are you asking, but A5100 does not have EVF (electronic view finder) As there is no mirror in mirroless cameras they are always in live view, image on screen or EVF is what sensor see at that moment
