Focus Area Tutorial! (2018)
Hello internet! In this video I go over the different focus areas in the Sony a6000. Wide, Zone, Center, and Flexible Spot. Hopefully this gives you more confidence to get things in focus and to better help you focus on the creative side rather than the focusing. Let me know if this helped or any other topics you'd like me to cover!

Very nice video again! Well edited :) Center focus is also a very easy when used with AF-S (Auto-focus Single) mode. I'm pretty sure you've also made a video explaining AF-S. Point the camera so the object you want to focus on is in the center and half-press the shutter. While holding the shutter half pressed, move the camera so you get a nice composition and take the shot. This is like flexible spot mode but quicker, unless maybe you're using a tripod. Just an additional tip :)

Need to use a higher aperture. F5.6 lets say, will increase the DEPTH of the focus. F1.8 is a lot more SHALLOW. Hopefully that makes sense! Of course apertures that are smaller decrease the light so it’s tougher to use at night.

👍A vid on focus peaking would be appreciated - colors, choice of thicknesses and what practical effect they have on what is in focus - advantages and trade-offs. For center-lock-on tracking we need to select wide area, AF-C, and custom assign (say) center button to center-lock-on tracking. Also, center focus points, in general, tend to be more accurate. Dog almost did photo-bomb, but was well behaved and stayed in shadows.

I thought I would share how I take photos of Athletes. One of the tools is using Area Focus with AF-C. Most action photography I do actually is Figure Skating. Since most rinks don't have a camera portal, I wind up using Area Focus with it in the Top Center area. This allows me to make sure I focus on places that are either above the glass (or above the ice) and onto the skater. At the same time, then I have room to compose a little bit of where the skater is in the shot. Doing this has kept my camera from needing to worry about looking at the entire sensor area and restricting the focus area helps me get sharp focus on the subject.

I take a lot of landscape photos, and want to blur out branches and trees that are close to me so I can focus on mountains in the distance. Do you have recommended settings for landscapes?
@kyletaggart

Thanks glad it helped! Typically you should use a high aperture for a landscape (to have more in focus). However you can use the different focus areas to help pin point on specifics.

It’s in a tips n tricks video of mine. You have to shoot in manual mode and then slow the shutter to the slowest possible shutter - BULB. Or just use a long shutter speed and paint while it’s open. Bulb is a two person job, long shutter speed like 25 seconds will open and close on its own.

Focus area "WIDE", and if you're in "A" mode, meaning aperture priority, set the aperture number to say...f5.6 or f8. The higher the number, the more the entire scene will be in focus. Keep in mind, the higher the aperture number, the darker the image will be. However when in aperture priority mode, other settings will compensate and typically keep the scene exposed well. Hope this helps!

My preferred setting: Stationary objects: Center focus, half press shutter and recompose. Pre-AF off. DMF mode to fine adjust, Eye auto focus on AEL button (People), face tracking always active, object track on centerbutton. Landscape, always use Manual Focus (MF). hello. can you answer me this question? If I photograph families and I use the face detector with the Sony A6000, would it be better to configure the multi or center metering? I am working with focus on area. I need the photos to come out as uniform as possible. thank you
@kyletaggart
@kyletaggart Жыл бұрын
I’ve used the default for metering. If you’re shooting manual - I think it’s more important to focus on shutter, aperture, ISO. Face detection should work great in a family shoot. All shots straight out of camera will not necessarily be uniform in a natural light shoot, but you’ll be editing the shots most likely and can adjust in post. Get in the habit of checking each face in shots and try your best to get all in focus.

Hi, Good video. But I have a question. Is there a way to customize a button to bring the focus area already selected? For example, I already selected a Flexible spot, but I want to move the focus to another corner. Can I do that without going back to the focus area? Canon has a button to activate the focus area already selected and Fujifilm has the joystick. you touch it and can move the focus around. I can not do that on Sony... Can I? Thanks.
@kyletaggart

The Sony a6100 has touch functionality for focus points, but not the a6000. You’d have to use the circle dial or two a direction to move the point. As for jumping in an out of the focus area quickly, you can have focus area set in your function menu, the two rows of settings you can customize. Or, I believe you can set one of the custom buttons like c1 to focus area.

@kyletaggart

The XT3 is a brand new camera, and I’m sure it’s great, but you’d need a lens so you have to add that on to the cost. Also the 6500 may come with the 18-135 which is a newer lens that I think is pretty cool. I’d go with the 6500 personally but that’s just me! I don't know if you are still monitoring this video, but just in case...I was over at a friend's to teach her some photography with her a6000. I shoot with an Olympus, and the equivalent to your "flexible focus" is super fast and easy to adjust. I just hit one of the four arrows that surround the dial in the back, the focus box appears, and with those arrows I move it where I want. Even shooting in auto mode (iso, aperture, shutter speed) I'll often choose my own focus point. With her Sony a6000, it seemed like you had to go to that menu setting after every single shot to choose flexible focus on order to move the focus point. Is there any way to change the settings so it's more like my Olympus, a one button thing? Google, and even this video, suggest not, which if that's true I don't think I'd ever purchase a Sony.... But I've heard such great things! So hoping you can help me out.

I should definitely do a video on that! Quick tips. Use AF-C. If you’re shooting in manual mode make sure you have your shutter speed at say 1/500. Focus Area - do wide. See if that helps!

Hi ! Maybe this is a silly question. But I am still confused with how the different focus areas and focus modes interact with each other. Basically, can you do a video combining your last two videos ? Lol . Thanks for your amazing videos btw. They are greatly appreciated.
@kyletaggart
@kyletaggart 5 жыл бұрын
Hey! The focus area does what it does regardless of the focus mode. So if you’re on AF-C and you’re in zone, it’s going to continuously try and find that zone in focus. If you’re in AF-S, half press the shutter, it’s going to focus on whatever area you assigned. Best I can say is practice with a stagnant object and go from there! Hope this helps! 😊🙌🏻

What's the best focus area to shoot sport? (futsal)
@kyletaggart
@kyletaggart 2 жыл бұрын
Probably wide or center. You won’t have time moving the focus point around on individual focus point modes. Center will obviously allow you to get focus nailed on any action in the center - as long as you’re framing it for that purpose. Wide - will let the camera do its thing, leave face detection on and see how it performs.

There are plenty at f1.8, depends on the style you want. They range in focal length (how zoomed in your field of view will be). Sigma make a 16mm, 30mm, and 56mm at f1.4, Sony has a 35mm f1.8, Sony 50mm f1.8. All of those lenses would give you great background blur!

Personally, I feel no need for that. Basically unusable anyway in bright sunlight. To chimp, set review to 2 or 5 seconds, press AEL and it zooms so you can check sharpness, scroll if needed with thumbweel, and halfpress shutter to get fast back to shooting. With all the custom dials and buttons, no touchscreen navigation needed IMO.

I would have agreed with you until the other day i was using another mirrorless camera (which I’ll talk about in another video soon) where you could designate what eye you use for the viewfinder, then depending on that, using the top left or right hand quadrant you could simply move your finger around and focus on a single point. It sounds difficult, but it’s extremely intuitive and useful. Also a touch screen (a responsive one), is nicer than I thought regarding settings. You can of course map custom buttons for quick use, but a touch screen adds direct changes to be made quicker sometimes. Of course? It’s all preference!

I think these focus areas kind of useless with sony a6400 that has touch screen focus.. you can touch anywhere on the screen to focus instantly without going to change the focus area to this or to that !
@ppeerrrriinn
@ppeerrrriinn 5 жыл бұрын
Just want to add something about the center focus. You can also use it to point your camera at something you want to focus on, hold your focus, and then compose the shot. So it is not just for focussing on objects in the center. This works for me better most of the time then using selective focus
