Today we're comparing two of my current favorite cameras. The Sony A6400 is no kidding what I consider to be the camera to beat for the online video community right now. Its an absolute work horse that can easily run your entire online presence.
The EOS R on the other hand is starting to win me over with its great looking image quality and fantastic photography capabilities. Plus I like flip out screens like a lot.
But they are different styles of cameras but everything from now on will be compared against the A6400 because its now the base line standard camera I will recommend from now on.

Hey Gary, Thank you SO MUCH for making this video! I inherited a “boat load of EF glass” a couple of weeks ago but have been in the Sony system until now - I own the 6400 already and love it like you do, but also want to get into full frame photography with Canon. I toyed with getting the EOS R6 but it’s too warm in video straight out of camera, and it’s so expensive as a starter Canon. I also don’t have a computer capable of handling a lot of beefy 4K video anyway. With this comparison, you showed that I can continue to enjoy my 6400 with the kit lens for online videos AND explore that EF glass I got for photography AND have the option to get into RF mount down the road AND not kill my bank account...lol. Research done. You figured it out, and now I’ve figured it out. Love your channel. Thanks.

Oh man, I so can't wait to get the a6400!! I had to sell my a5100 last year, and despite the overheating issues it was my favorite camera! It look like the a6400 is basically the upgraded version of it!

Glad to hear your dabbling in photography. Keep hope alive! Though I don’t have big hands, I much prefer the size of the Canon R for busy photo work. A smaller body makes me feel like I’m all thumbs.

I still have my A5000 and it's a great camera. Although I own other cameras the A5000 is the camera I take with me everywhere. Light, excellent image quality .. big list of plus and very short list of minus. Many years of use and maybe the best camera for the money I've owned.

If you want a camera with video quality a step up from a6400, what should you use? (In another video you say - please correct me if I got It wrong- that you use a Eos-R as main camera and the a6400- for B-photo, so I'm a little confused)

The fact that eos R is being compared to a6400 tells us how much of a dissapointment eos R is.

Shantanu Mishra That’s a fact. I’ve owned the 70D since it came out. Love the photos but noticed the weak low light performance in video. I’ve been looking to upgrade and for less than what I purchased my 70D for, that 6400 packs a mean punch compared to these double priced cameras. However, I’m not shooting weddings or events. So my opinions are limited. I will say though, Canon’s color science is magical.

Using only price as a predicate, yes; the R is more than twice the money. Using their respective spec sheets, no, it's totally fair. That says a lot about the R. Take that however you will.

It's pricey. If it had dual card slots and even just a 1.6x crop in 4k then maybe. I still kind of want it though to have full frame photography, 4k video and 10bit recording. I think vlogging with the 10-18mm efs lens in 4k would be a good fit.

I was thinking about getting a Sony a 6400. I know I would want to get the Sigma primes, but was wondering which zoom would be better. I’m thinking about getting the Tamron 28 to 75 partially because of its macro capabilities, but also because of a potential upgrade path to full frame. What do you Think about this lens compared to Sony’s lenses made for apsc cameras?

I really like the sigma primes and the 28-75 is a great lens but it might be too tight on an apsc camera. Tamron is coming out with a 15-35 here soon that would be more like a traditional zoom lens.

That’s true, the 28-75 would end up being kind of a weird focal range on this camera.

Have to admit ...the cropping in and out when making a point I felt was kinda started by you. It may not have been but after seeing you do that then I started seeing everybody else doing it which is so annoying now so its nice to see you change it up to to cameras at 2 different angles. I realise if you have only one camera then its a way of getting 2 frame shots to add dynamics to the video .. there is another way i feel that no one is doing with the one camera trick but we will see if anyone does do it no takers yet but it is still there ...I know when you had your "pillars of" cannot remember the rest of it but I know Jared Polin used it for the "L mount alliance" ..so i feel your rocking shit that others tend the copy!

when i got the a73 and saw that i could get the a mount lens and spent some moneys on the LAEA3 adapter, which i later sold because it was "cheaper" to just get e mount lens than a mount. yet if you have a mount lens then yeah go for it, i just made the mistake on thinking it would be cheaper when in reality it wouldn't.

I find the autofocus is pretty poor using the LAEA3 adapter with my A mount Sony 35mm f1.8, 50mm f1.8 and Tamron 18-270 lenses.

I'm not a sony user, but to me its not even close. The 6400 is great for online content creation and there are enough lenses out there to be worthwhile, as you noted!

I use an A6400 and when its A6400 + Sigma lens trio (not the art line, the DC DN range) for the price of the EOS R + lens... this is no contest. Alternatively you can do the A6400, Sigma 16mm f1.4 and a decent gimbal - again no contest. Better software just wins these days and no other camera software beats Sony.

With mirrorless, the only camera body that would fit into that price range is the EOS RP or the EOS R from 2018, but the thing is that RF lenses are so expensive, that I don't think it even makes sense to invest in Canon's mirrorless right now unless you're willing to pay a premium for RF lenses or if you already own a lot of EF lenses that you can use with an adapter.

Totally agree that when you buy a camera, you're getting into a system. Whether you're brand loyal or not, if you buy into a brand, it's fairly likely you'll keep gettin that one. I started with an A5100, now I'm on an A7III. I'm really only interested in buying strictly Sony and that's BECAUSE??? I'm in the system already. Oh yeah, and they're the best 😂🤣

I need the best camera for use on a tripod/monopod/slider for shooting B-roll for product videos and one with inexpensive lenses. Certainly do not wish to spend thousands or hundreds on glass.

I would say you need to compare the 6400 with th RP, but of course, unless you are strictly a photographer, it's an unfair fight... I was a Canon fanboy, infact, except my Sigma 16mm & Tokina 11-16, I mainly use Canon glass(just bought the 10-22 as a backup for my Lumix g7). I still don't understand why Canon refuses to put out a midgrade all around APS-C camera... kinda glad they don't though, cause now it's opened up a whole new world... I will say the touch screen is great, but with the flip up, it just takes a little practice to master the reach around, hahaha take it easy...

The Canon R is still a bit disappointing for me. 120 fps in only 720p is ... crap. The crop in 4K is also just too bad - so there is no full-frame benefit when it comes to wide angle lenses. On the other side I really want to like the 6400, but this sort of camera has to have IBIS - which is doesn't. And I love to shoot in 4K60fps to have a bit of smooth slomo in 4K from time to time. So ... what to choose? If the 6400 had IBIS - I would clearly go with it. But basically both of them are not for me. Which is really a shame - I would love to have a camera with the specs of the GH5 but in fullframe. Or a A7III with 4K60fps :) That would be nice Anyway: Great review - like always :)

I love the formfactor and features of the Sony... However after shooting after shooting with an A7iii for A cam, and a 6300 for a B cam for 6 months.... The Sony clunk..... There's something about the Sony that just felt clunky, I also bought a Sony Hx99 had it for about a week and returned it. The menus are ok...... Once you completely set it up manually.

Good morning, I live in Brazil. I record marriage with an A6400. with a stabilized 18-105mm f4 sony lens. use in the same wedding a 5Dmark2 canon with a 24-70mm f2.8 canon lens. I can guarantee you the quality of 6400. and as good as 5d and more in on dance floor it gets better. Sorry when you buy a camera. think of a lens at least f4. because the aquality of your final image of much of the lens. I'm going to be able to record a7III and full HD as well. video of weddings and much the same as 7iii. I'm very happy with the 6400. best cost benefit. sorry about my English

Then why not get Olympus EM10 III for even less? You get excellent IBIS and very good 4K video. Maybe it won't track your face as well as A6400 but you'll get better footage if you start walking.

@@TheEverydayDad for the types of shots you're taking you may really like picture backing paper too! Just at like a hobby store. You can get all sorts of matte finished colors for $10 a pop and they're like heavy duty cardboard kinda material. I just have the grey and black myself.

Interesting how R and a6400 cost same now. Sony held much better that test of time by some reason. For me i own a6300 and RP and both are great but s6300 is one i am keeping after 6 years and RP is going. RP is better in few ways but i found Canon very limiting in customisation and usability. But they sure do better screens and menus. Audio of a6300 kills every other camera even built-in mac. Maybe some dedicated video camera is better but i tryed everything from Panasonic G9 and S5 to fuji and xt4 and all of them are inferior to it. And that XAVC 8 bit is more capable then fujis 10 bit and canons codacs are just laughable. Good luck grading any canon that costs less then 4000$.

Sony APC cameras are 1.5 crop not 1.6, 1.6 is canon APC cameras.

In 4K 30fps it’s 1.6, I didn’t clarify my frame rate.

Sony's good on spec sheet, but when you actually use it, you feel better with Canon. So I would go for Canon RP not R over a6400 and a7 III. Oh, I give extra point for swivel LCD panel.

@@TheEverydayDad mmm yeah good point, but considering that it records 1.5 crop in 4K 24fps (super 35 cinema standar) with fully funtional autofocus with eye, face, and object trancking is waaaaaaay better than 1.74 crop without dual pixel autofocus 🤷🏻‍♂️

I disagree, while yes they have the better technical recording codecs and the xt3 has the ability to do 10 bit internal, the autofocus is unreliable and doesn’t have a flip anything screen for monitoring while in use.

A6400 is nowhere near as good as the Canon EOS R. Not even the Sony a7 III comes close. Neither in photo or video. Art is subjective, I agree, however, if you’re aiming for objective colors, blacks, and whites I fine Canon is on point.
