Everyone's looking for buttery, smooth slow motion these days! From KZfaqrs to film makers, we ALL like and sometimes need 120fps! Yet, after using the sony A6500 for the better half of 2017, i've come to the conclusion that 120FPS just isn't it's strong point. Yes it's there but the data rate from it is SO LOW! That's just one part i'm covering in today's video. Here's the 3 main points:
1.) Data/Bitrate when using S&Q and normal shooting modes
2.) Difference when using 60FPS compared to 120FPS
3.) Tips on getting better looking images when using 120FPS
As always leave a comment here so I know what camera you guys are using for you 120fps videos! Don't forget to subscribe so you know when new content comes out.
Hope you enjoy!

I clicked on this because I had the SAME problem. I just recently wrapped a video with my a6500 where i cut together bunch of slow motion stuff and 4k stuff. And i was very NOT happy with most of the clips in slow-motion because of the softness and so on. But i found that few shots were actually looking good and were totally usable! So after watching all the clips over and over i came to the conclusion that the only way to shoot 120 frames without being disappointed is to always shoot using the fastest aperture you can possibly get from your lens possibly 1.8 or even 1.4! In that way you'll hide that lack of detail in the background that looks horrible. I saw how all the clips that i took with the sony 10-18 f4 looked bad because i couldn't get that bookeh that hides the lack of details behind the subject. My own opinion!

I use the a6300 and I have noticed softness when shooting 120fps in low light however unsharp mask within premiere pro can help to make up for that softness. It’s a great camera for KZfaq and Vimeo and social media sites. Have to remember that we aren’t putting our videos on a movie screen. For basic work it gets the job done

I'm still a newb to a lot of this stuff but I've had to learn video production on the fly through my job, I do creative content for a locally owned gym chain. We're still on the low budget side and I didn't want to jump right into getting a camera way beyond my knowledge and capabilities, so we just switched from my first camera, a Canon (70D) to Sony (a6300) specifically for the slo mo. Just from my own self-educated newbie experience I love how punchy Sony is, especially for action stuff like fitness. I hated the kit lens initially but now I'm learning how and when to use it and get decent shots, but with my Sigma 30mm 1.4, the slo mo for my purpose is great. If you get good separation of your subject from the background that lens' bokeh is really nice and creamy, it makes for some cool and crisp shots for my use. However I will agree, when you put a 120 fps 1080 shot next to even a downscaled 24 fps 4K shot the slo mo will appear a little soft. A useable shot is really all relative, I really think as long as it's not juxtaposed right next to an obviously higher res shot and as long as there isn't noise, the 120fps is pretty nice. Especially for the price.

I've been finding the exact same thing and just came to the conclusions you have - using in-camera sharpening and shooting 50fps (I'm in the UK so using PAL mode) - I'm still experimenting with using Optical Flow in Premier Pro to slow it further. Thanks for the vid... really glad I came across it - confirmed my thoughts!

Great review! I've been contemplating the 1dx markii and the a7riii for my hybrid needs as well. I like the eye autofocus of the sony because with my 5diii when I take a photo I have to focus then recompose. However, the canon is $2,000 more. Two questions. First, do you still have to focus and recompose with the 1dx? Second, what camera and lens did you use to shoot this vlog? Thanks for your content it is very informative!!!

Nice finding with the bit-rate! 120p looks good with fast, sharp lenses (I use the sigma 60 2.8 Art and 30 1.4 DC DN) as it softens the background making the subject look sharp. Also, choosing what to film is important, very detailed and fast subjects like water show the low bit-rate as with simpler and slower subjects (cars, people) the compression doesn't affect the quality of the footage that much.
