Note: Towards the end of the video I put ISO 640 & 12,800 for the FX3, ZV-E1, A7S3, and FX3 Base ISO's, but it's supposed to be ISO 800 & 12,800.... Really sorry about that blunder!

Awesome video bro. After seeing this, I decided to buy A6700 and got convinced that there is no need of full frame camera to use SLog3 effectively. Keep up the good work. One question. What should be ND filter range required for f1.8 during the bright daylight?

I would say around 5-10 stops of ND @ f/1.8 depending on how bright it is of course... A 1-5 ND was not enough for f/1.2 lens which I was recently testing for example...

I want to purchase a Tiffen Black pro mist, or glimmerglass, for my fx30, but I also want a ND/Variable ND as you said its overexposed recording outside on my f1.4 lens, how can i attach both?

You can thread on multiple circular style filters on top of one another in order to stack them. I recommend getting the filter size of your largest lens that you use and then getting setup up rings so you can fit your smaller lenses as well. I have that stuff linked below in the video if you want to take a look. They also make magnetic stacking systems, but I have not used that yet...

I would go with the R10 out of those 2 cameras, but the R7 would prolly be worth the extra cash if you can swing it for the even better video quality...

Thanks Jason, I used your settings on my a6700 (Sony APSC lens 18-135) and am enjoying the changes. Question, when you used the Sony technical LUT, you seemed to use the Final Cut Pro Built-in Sony LUT (at ~17:30), instead of the uploaded Custom Camera Sony LUT (when I uploaded the Technical LUTs, they were in the folder under Custom Camera in the LUT drop down). Was that on purpose?

I had to "Add Custom Camera Lut" to the Final Cut Lut list by going to my downloads folder and add them. They were not there by default for me as I showed at the 12:30 mark a bit... My custom luts are still in my downloads folder for reference and not where the default luts are stored for final cut.

Hey Jason new to your channel and new to slog3. I have the sony a6700 and was wondering, when i shoot in slog3 and when i look at the clip folder and find my files they are already Mp4. Is that normal? I want to grade and apply luts but having an mp4 already seems odd to me. Then again i am new to this. Any advice? Thanks so much and keep up the great content

Yes that is normal Ryan. They are .mp4, but the codecs are still new and advanced especially when using 10-bit 4.2.2 in HS mode...

Because you don't have a custom Lut installed on the camera.... The Rec 709 profile will work if you use Gamma Display Assist and that is what I use, but if you want your own lut you need to install it on the camera by registering it.. I noticed that even with Log Shooting off you can still change the existing PP settings to S-Log3 anyway. Is there any difference? Thanks great info.

Great question and no real difference, you can do it either way via customizing one of the profiles to Slog3, or just using the new Slog3 setting in the Main Menu I showed in this video. I did not want to confuse beginners by showing that method also, because its sort of the old way nowadays for Slog3, but clearly still works and great if you want to play with some of the other profiles like PP11: S-Cinetone for example and so on...

The settings I showed in this video is where I would recommend starting and then experimenting from there in various lighting conditions. You will need to dial in your exposure depending on the lighting environment and white balance for the best quality possible. The settings need to be dialed in for each scene, so not really default settings as far as Aperture, but shutter speed should be double your frame rate, so 1/50sec if shooting in 4k/24p. The ISO you want as low as possible so in the case of the A6700 ideally at ISO 800 for Slog3... A variable ND filter really helps dial in the exposure while keeping the shutter speed at the proper setting, otherwise you will need to change the shutter speed most likely.

Sorry, I'm a bit confused. Does this mean that the zebra pattern indicates the areas with the correct exposure? As far as I know, zebras usually show parts that are overexposed. If I may ask, why is a zebra pattern needed to show the areas with the correct exposure? And how do we know which parts are overexposed? Is it through the histogram? Please help, as I am just starting my journey in the world of photography and videography. Thank you.

No worries... The Zebras area. tool that can be used for a lot of things. In this tutorial I am showing you how this tool can be used to check for "proper" exposure for a given subject such as a face in a scene... You can also use the Zebras to check blow highlights, but the numbers will be different than what i showed you in this video.

Also, if I were to use just the normal video mode for shooting. Would iso 800 and 2500 still apply? What are good ISO levels for standard shooting?

No those ISO's are the Base ISO for Slog3 specifically and that helps get the extra dynamic range out of the footage. Regular footage does not require those specific ISO's, because the Dynamic range is a bit less. It's sort of just like taking photos in the regular movie mode, you just change the settings as you need. Slog3 requires more specific settings to get dialed in perfect. Anything under ISO 3200 is pretty darn clean, bit I go up to ISO 6400 all the time and it's still fine for the most part, you start to see some grain in the footage.

Coloring is an art in itself, so I just try and go for what it looked like. I often use the color temp slider also, but that is about it...

Here is what I am thinking of I need to do here. I am Pro Photographer but just getting into Videography. Set the white balance accurately using a middle grey card and into custom 1/2/3. This will reproduce to what you see. Next use Sony LUT download which Jason showed us and do the coloring grading. Finally tweak this in post to your style. Add your signature style in there. Hope I am right!! 🤔

@yoursureshotphotographypra8961 I use a fixed WB of 4500K on every video for outside night comparisons. I film in HLG3 so I don't have to grade, but if I wanted a bit more range from slog one day, surely there is a lut free way of converting the footage to have the correct contrast etc. A stylised look is the last thing my viewers want.

@@yoursureshotphotographypra8961 Yes, but you also need to make sure the exposure is correct when shooting in Log, which is why I used the Zebras, but you can also eye ball it with the histogram as well, but not as accurate... Log is harder than shooting raw for photos in my opinion..

How do we install the technical LUT onto the camera to display while shooting? I noticed it gives the option, but I am unsure how to get the LUT onto the camera. I am new to color grading.

I did not have the lut on the camera during this video just to be clear. I only used it in Finalcut after the fact. The REC 709 in camera will do basically the same thing. Update, You need to put the LUT file in the correct spot on the memory card! Private> Sony> Pro >LUT The Sony LUT should work if you put it in this spot...

It's up to you, I fallowed Sony's instructions here and you can add more if you want as a lot of people do, but I don't for the most part.

This was wonderfully explained. Thanks for the same. 2 Questions Jason: 1. Can you please explain the theory on why logging is always has to have Flexible ISO, yet iso setting are changeable between 800 and 2500? 2. This is almost set to only 2 things I can change to expose right. Aperture or ND Filter. If you want to have the background separation then it is just ND Filter. Right? Hats off for explaining the concepts very well.

Hello and thanks for the kind words :) Flexible ISO is a bit easier to use, because you can actually change the ISO even though you should only use the base ISO's in a perfect world. ON the FX3 for example it has a Cine EI mode where you can't change the ISO off Base... So yeah, once the Base ISO is set and "proper" shutter speed all you have is Aperture, ND Filtering, or adding/ subtracting light to/ from the scene.... Happy New Year!
