Glad to see this video! One thing though-Since a few of the A7Cii features are limited to APSC/Super35 mode, I'd love to see an addition to the low light test on the full frame but with the crop mode enabled (and presumably then the same APSC lens). Or even just a comment on what to expect in high iso when we swap into that mode.

The A6700 fits my needs perfectly. I have a complement of APS-C and Full Frame lenses, but when I do decide to get a full-frame camera, the A7C II is the one I will add to my bag. But for the time being, the A6700 does everything I need. Even for the odd professional work. Great video!

Appreciate the comparison! I have been going back and forth on these two. I have lenses for both systems, and have been brainwashed to go FF for the most part. But on a recent trip took my FF setup with multiple lenses, and a small APS-C camera as a backup and after a few days went almost exclusively shooting with the APS-C camera because of size and weight. So here, I'm going with the A6700. These two cameras are soo close in soo many ways and the A6700 is the much better value.

@@MarkBennettCameraCrisis agreed. I have a Ricoh GRIII that has great IQ but the focus can be spotty. So I find myself thinking the A6700 with some smaller quality APS-C lenses would be a nice compromise between something tiny like the Ricoh GRIII or Fuji X100V and FF set-up.

Thanks, Mark! I've owned the A6600 for a year and a half now and this is my takeaway if you're getting your first camera: Get the A6700 with the sigma 18-50mm. It'll cover 95% of your needs, all for ~$2000 and it'll easily last you a decade. The quality really is that good. I have the Sigma 16mm and I use it for conference calls mostly, and will be getting the sigma 56mm for the best quality of portrait photos and unique perspectives.

Thank you so much for this review! I've been waiting for this. While A7Cii is just a wonderful camera packed with pretty much everything, I'm going with A6700. If I was a professional photographer, it would be a no-brainer and go with full frame to capture low light performance. Still, because I'm more of a hobbyist and dedicate >90% to photoshooting, I can't justify the high price of the full frame lenses that costs sometimes even more than a new camera body even in the used market... I understand A7Cii body itself is extremely reasonably priced, I'd rather spend those extra $s towards better lenses :) I'll go with A6700 + sigma 18-50mm, SEL35f18, and Sigma56f14.

Hey Mark, thanks for the concise review everyone's waited for (including me) 😅. It was a tough choice for me but finally I went for the 6700. Especially since I already got 2 ZV-E10 cameras (one of your favorites) and various APS-C lenses for my video podcast. Even though I was up to buying the A7C II for months, it feels like the better deal (for me) to stick with APS-C. And honestly, I barely shoot/record/vlog in extreme lowlight. Thanks for the comparison between the a6700 and the A7Cii. Great video. I have an a6500 that is still working and as an amateur family photographer, it has been a great camera for the last 6+ years. I nearly bought the first A7C around Christmas, but decided the changeover would be too much expense to justify for the photography I do. Since I’m already invested in the APSC lenses, if I need to upgrade my a6500 I would select the a6700 and perhaps invest in another lens or two and still be at or under the cost of the a7Cii. Thanks again.

Very good video and a good comparison of these two cameras, as always with a grain of humour…👍 I learned as well that you are producing your videos in the city of my favourite NHL team.😊 I have ordered the A6700 and when Sony launched the A7 CII, I was tempted to switch and cancel the order. This video showed that the differences between the two cameras in terms of video and image quality are not dramatic. When you look on Sony’s website two sample images of -I think- the same model, it is impossible for me to notice any difference in image quality even cropping in. Cropping in with the A7C II compared to the A6700 does not offer much advantage (crop to APSC gives approx. 15 MP, reaching 26 MP allows an approx. 1.1 crop), so most likely I will stay with the A6700. Thanks Mark, I was waiting for this comparison! I'm currently on an a6000 with a few lenses and thinking of making an upgrade. I mostly use my camera for travel photography. I love the colors on the A7c ii, they seem a bit more natural. Also low light is awesome. So I'm thinking of making the transition to full-frame. However, the a6700 is great as well, more affordable and keeping it light and compact. This makes the transition to full-frame more like wishful thinking. I guess I can rent both camera's and see which suits best.

@@MrSwaggernaut83 I bit the bullet and got the a6700 this weekend. I haven't tried it out yet. My reasoning was, I still own quite some high quality aps-c glass. I don't see myself paying the extra price and carry the extra weight of full frame during holidays. After 5 years I expect for my needs and level of expertise an a6700 gives still a nice follow-up in learning more about photography. I can always start by putting a full frame lens on my a6700 if I'm not satisfied with the results. I don't print anything, so I don't expect to see a big difference between aps-c and fullframe.

A6700 is a value proposition killer at this price. As much as I would love to feel fancy going full frame with the A7CII (which I REALLY, REALLY want since the A7IV came out - my favorite Sony camera to date and the A7CII being its cheaper sibling is an amazing choice), the price difference alone is a deal breaker. For what I do in terms of content, I could have incredibly high production value with the A6700 and a few great prime lenses within the price of just the A7CII body. And then it gets more pricey once you need to utilize that sensor with full frame lenses... That is way too difficult to just overlook. A6700 - a clear winner. PS Plus I already own the ZV-E10 with the Sigma 18-50 F2.8 thanks to Mark over here so the A6700 feels like a natural addition to the studio while keeping the APS-C vibe alive.

Mark great video as usual! You always give me some things to think about. From my old full-frame days (about 6 months ago!) I still have the excellent Sony 24mm F1.4 GM, which I am keeping. I am thinking about the A6700 and an FX30, or two A6700 cameras. I like the idea of moving to lighter weight and cheaper lenses. I currently would consider myself a hybrid shooter, a bit more photo, but am thinking about getting more into video (spending some more time this fall and winter learning how to use my gear in that direction). I have the Sony A7Cii on order (my older full frame was the A7C), on the wait list for the Sony A6700 and could get the Sony FX30 right now. I was thinking about one of each, then the Sony 11mm F1.8 (or the 15mm F1.4), the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8, and maybe the Sigma 56mm f1.4 which would give me some good flexibility for both photo and video. Thoughts?

Sony 11 would be best for handheld footage of yourself because it is wide. But if you don’t need that, the 15 is overall the best video lens to get for apsc (talking heads, interviews, documentary). The sigma 18-50 would be an excellent all purpose photo lens (or the Tamron 17-70 2.8). The sigma 56 or the viltrox 75 are amazing for portrait photos.

Thanks for the really helpful presentation, it really answered most of my questions! (no, I'm not affiliated with the channel!) Here are a couple of more questions I have though: When using both cameras above ISO 5.000 and going up to 10.000 (roughly) is the 6700 still much worse? And the second question: Does S-Cinetone on both cameras give the same result on correcting highlights in post, compared to using an HLG profile? I don't use S-Log, I prefer HLG2 in the day and Cine-4 at night, with details down to -100 for night shooting. I own both the 6300 and 6400 and I am also trying to decide. Yes, I do mind giving the extra dollars but I would if I decide to. I mostly use the cameras primarily for stock videos and photos and then YT travel videos, not often for commissioned works. I hate the bad rolling shutter my cameras have and want to upgrade, plus it seems these cameras will give a much better handheld still video if I am not panning, so I will not have to use my gimbals! When travelling with equipment, including a gimbal, I might walk up to 24 km a day so if I go for a full frame I will have to buy a new heavier lens and use my big Ronin gimbal, instead of using my lighter Zhyiun Crane. I use stabilised lenses, the 18-135 Sony zoom and the 35mm Sony f 1.8 prime. I wanted to buy the 16mm Sigma 1.4 but it has no stabilisation so, here's my 3rd question: If I am to use the Sigma at night, with the f1.4 (a bit closed to a slower f) could I get away with using no more than ISO 1250 so would this beat the point of using the A7CII? All these thoughts are running like thin air in my mind and I can't decide!

I left full frame photography after my kids got older and didn't cooperate with having their pictures taken any longer. I got rid of the Nikon D700 w/ 50/1.4, and started using the original Sony RX100 and, later, the iPhone 5. Now, in retirement, and traveling more, I've regained interest in photography and opted for the 6700 w/ 16-55 G and 70-350 G and a nice backpack to carry it all with. The iPhone 15 pro max will be my video camera.

I currently have a Sony DSLR that I mostly used for the kid's hockey. Was thinking of switching to mirrorless. The speed and lighting constraints of hockey is a hard situation for photography. Do you think the A6700 could work well in that situation? Would I lose autofocus functionality by using my current Sigma 70-200 f2.8 lens on it. I heard it takes Sony DSLR lenses like that with an adapter. Would a setup like that affect the autofocus (would I need to go manual because of that)? Or would I be forced to also get a new lens for hockey?

Thanks for the excellent review as always. I own the a7iv and recently purchased the a6700 for vlogging and for use as a podcast camera. I haven’t tried using it yet for recording past an hour but have concerns with it potentially overheating, while interviewing guest in my studio. Since I already have an a7iv would it make sense to exchange the a6700 for an fx30? I want a secondary camera to accompany my a7iv to have another angle. I must say I really like the a6700’s versatility and new features but I am torn on whether it will also serve my podcast needs. Any advice/suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 5 ай бұрын
for long podcasts, the fx30 would be better. But you as long as you don't plug in the a6700 to an HDMI monitor, you'll probably get some pretty long run times. I would test it out a few times in your studio - run it for as longs as it will go.

Been waiting for this comparison. Either camera is a big jump up from any of the Sony apsc line. I'm leaning a6700 as an upgrade from my a6400. Don't see the extra 1k+ CAD being worth it for the a7c ii fir my purposes. P.S.: Congrats on becoming one of the cool kids.

Thank you for the video. You promised and delivered. A difference you left out that bothers many on the forums is that the A7CII lacks a full two curtain mechanical shutter of the A6700 that allows the Electronic First Curtain Shutter to be disable to in some cases give you better Bokah with wide apertures and fast shutter speeds. Also the slower 1/160 for flash synchronization is another again impacting the usage with strobes. I haven’t decided if that will impact me but I do already have the A6700. Currently own the A7RV an A7IV so ultimately I can work around those but portability then goes away. Also still struggling to decide between A7C II or A7CR but really didn’t want to spend the extra money on the CR. Will see. Thank you again.
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis
@MarkBennettCameraCrisis 9 ай бұрын
the flash sync speed could cause issues depending on how you shoot. But the e-front curtain shutter would only cause a problem if the sensor readout was slow, so on these cameras, it’s not an issue. I was speaking to a Sony engineer and he said if you have a newer Sony camera, even if you could turn off e-front curtain shutter, you shouldn’t, because you won’t see any negative effects and it will help you get your shot faster.

Seeing as this is pretty much A7 IV, I doubt it would be differnet.

Thanks for this review Mr. Mark I am still struggling with the choice. I already have the Sony a 7 IV which is the same sensor as the A7CII and all only a bit bigger. I am new to this stuff only a couple months in but I do feel like a smaller camera would make it easier for some shoots and traveling. So I wanted to ask when it comes to video as a priority and taking pictures as a secondary which would you recommend mainly for traveling and doing some KZfaq/travel vlogs and of course taking the normal holiday pictures

I've been looking to replace my a6300 for a while. I'm quite torn between these two cameras. I would love to get the A7CR or A7RV but have to draw the line somewhere $$$ (I have a lot of APSC glass). I'd like to start dabbling with full frame, but would cropping to 14 MP be too much of a sacrifice? I would love to see some side by sides of how the images look. Been thinking of rather getting the a6700, adding a Sony 200-600 and upgrading to a full frame body later (not all in one go). Thoughts? I really want the new AI autofocus. Looking at new bodies my top line item is autofocus. Second is low light performance. Thought about an A7RIV (used) but I want the autofocus.

@MarkBennettCameraCrisis Thanks for the reply Mark! Yeh I realise on a per pixel basis the noise is the same. I just wondered if in practise, because you're effectively zoomed in on the image, the noise is more visible to the extent that the advantage over aps-c is minimised. Enjoying your videos!

I already own both A7R5 and A6700. A7CII and A7CR don't cross my mind at all because they just cut a lot of good features from the bigger camera e.g. EVF, hi-res flip-tilt screen of A7R5, 2 memory slots, CF Express, etc. If it is a macro day when I need lots of megapixels, I will bring A7R5. For any typical days, I prefer A6700 that is easier to carry with smaller lenses. Better than A7C series, IMO.
