I am facing exactly the same dilemma to make a decision between these 2 cameras, and I have finally made a decision to choose Sony a7IV.

Love my A7iv, had no overheating issue, I recorded 24 min 4k and I don't need record longer than that.

Thanks for guidance, I realized that I can live without extra AI chip but on day today use I will have more versatility and better control over camera with good grip, more functional buttons, Better EVF and joy stick with A7IV. I cancelled A7Cii order and re ordered A7IV

A7iv balances better with larger / zoom lenses, a7cii is ideal if you shoot with small primes. I have a7iii, and want to get a7cii as a second camera, specifically for street and travel photography. I would still use A7iii with larger and zoom lenses for more dedicated professional work, but if I just want to go out and get some street photography with something small and light, like Sony's 28mm, I think A7Cii is perfect for that. After decades of shooting with huge cameras and huge lenses, I just recently realized how much more enjoyable experience is to shoot with a small / light setup. I think Sony did a great job listening to the users: they started with a really small bodies like my A7s mk1, but quickly scaled them to the point there's not much difference with DSLRs. IMO A7Cii really showcases the key benefit of a mirrorless cameras, which is size and weight.

I bought an A7IV the very first it was released in my country keeping in mind the success of A7III , but all my trust on A7IV was lost. Reliabilty and overheating was the main issues. I had tried high temperature setting on A7IV but it can't hold recordings for more than 30 minutes in any mode of 4k 10 bit except for 8 bit 4 k modes where it recorded for 40-50 minutes.Screen flipped out all the times in all of my recordings. So, something hits my mind and I'm sharing it here.Sony had tried to fix us in the record limits of a7iii and a7c with A7IV 4k 10 bits just to differ us from their lineups. No one is admitting on youtube clearly saying it was solved by a firmware update but story was opposite. But the bad part of A7IV despite trying all the methods in 45°C heat was that it can overheat any time indoors or outdoors with just battery on standby in 30 minutes time. So, due to reliability issues myself and lot of my friends had sold A7IV and returned back to A7C. A7SIII was a good option but lack of updates and it was video specific only we can't call a hybrid machine. So, leaving pro photographers only and pro videographers only.The hybrid shooters requirements are different and they are of three types: starter hybrid shooter, mid level hybrid shooter and pro level hybrid shooter. So, A7IV fits with mid level hybrid shooters.A7CII fits between starter and mid level hybrid shooters beacuse it has no full size hdmi,big evf,and 2 card slots. A7CII has auto crop mode in video to feel us someone is shooting us.AI chip as per me is for that and more features which will never come in future update for free. Auto crop mode is useless with wide lenses so A7IV is better option to spent more wisely.A7CII is reduced A7IV both in software and hardware but heating issues are still present in A7CII with A7IV limits. Sony marketing is very smart they start shipping in our country for overheating cameras in winter months and no overheating cameras in summer months. So, many of us buy cameras without ever testing as they are never on shelf for us to test before buy. Sony always create a supply shortage till they sold most of the un-reliable cameras except fx line. This is reality. For hybrid shooting my first requirement is reliabilty of gear with heat tolerance, good battery and best environment factors like splash resistance, dust proofing etc. Second hybrid shooting requirement is the hardware and software should have all the features or camera packs at least all or most of the features of their top lineups. A7III was best hybrid so far from Sony. Still no reliable hybrid in Sony lineup is present today or a machine which gives better value for money. Autofocus is not a feature just required everytime. So, what is present or packs in Sony cameras for money leaving autofocus aside is what I will check for my hybrid needs.So, Sony's current lineup is not having any good camera like A7III in 10 bits.

Well, we haven't done a lot of tests but we did have a continuous 4k 422 10 bit shot at 24p onto a Delkin Black Card going 34 minutes without a warning. The camera itself was pretty warm but no warning and the footage looks great. We will have to be sure to do a full test later and report back.

@@elliotresnick5433 I shoot wildlife animal plus bird documentaries videos with high degree of motion involved in hot afternoons and low light evenings ex: herd of birds .Secondly, stage events with lot of color dresses with action speeches sometimes crossing more than 50 minimum time (as clients want those 10 bit video files and photos together ). Sometimes top notch autofocus is required sometimes autofocus is pain to control in fast action environment. So, autofocus is my requirement but not main requirement , its reliablity of operation of gear on field is main , low light performance with color is main requirement. I carry three systems on my shoulders always during shoots not all are top notch in every feature but do their work. Sony said a lot with A7IV and on ground reality is different. A7III is more reliable in set 30 minutes recording limit than A7IV but it lacks 10 bit color.So, its use is for autofocus photos and where motion is less and night photos plus limited short 8 bit videos. A7IV autofocus is sticky but overheating and reliability is a question in video so where color is required and long length videos with autofocus is required it can give overheating warning at any moment despite of high temp setting on. So, I can't switch off camera on field because action changes fast sometimes I need video 10bit sometimes photos.Here A7IV overheating makes it unreliable. Fuji is with me for deep depth of focus videos plus photos with megapixels required but lacks video lenses that can immediately switch between low light and high light environment subjects with motion , its IRIS speed is very slow in video for all lenses except 2. Canon R6 I had used but its story was same overheating.Panasonic with canon lenses is more reliable with single autofocus point for lengthy videos plus photos.I had replaced A7iv with one S52x and A7iii is replaced by S5mark2 with canon lenses.

So you suggest not to go with A74 or A7C2 . Any camera you have researched and can suggest as a hybrid great camera for travel photos and videos?

I chose the A7iv. Preferred the feel of it and with the current £300 cash back offer from Sony made it cheaper.

Joystick sync speed 1/160 on a7cii and 1/250 a7 max shutter on hss 1/4000 a7cii and 1/8000 on the a7iv these are making me wonder if i should really just go with a7iv since its now cheaper than a7cii and sometimes need those features and if the autofocus is almost the same anyways

Whats the diff between 4k and 8k shutter? Who needs 8k shutter? I never go up more than 1500k

Sony a7cii(silver) + Sony 40mm f2.5 with a lens hood and a vintage strap 😊.

I feel like the A74 is meant for a "shoot day" where I'm going to be taking the big lenses and I'm looking for better ergonomics, handling, and I don't necessarily feel the 100oz difference between the two, especially with the large lens. The slightly smaller body isn't as relevant when you attach a 8" lens at the end of it lol. If I need an EDC, I'm not going to be need a 33-42MP camera anyway, I don't need that many MP to shoot my family etc. I'd rather either use a SUPER compact camera like the Ricoh GRIII or my phone.

I love the compactness of the A7C, but there is just something about the way the A7IV feels in the hand, and how it feels putting your eye up to the viewfinder, clicking the shutter and feeling that “clunk” from the shutter curtain. It just feels like a more substantial experience, all technicalities aside.

Having both cameras I absolutely agree, and even though A7Cii is the newer camera with better auto focus, for some reason if you tell me I’m doing a photo shoot and I can only take one I would take the A7iv hands down, just feels great in the hand with all kinds of lenses

Instead, it employs the electronic-first curtain shutter (EFCS), in addition to providing the option of a full electronic shutter. While the absence of a complete mechanical shutter is not typically a deal-breaker, it’s important to be aware that the EFCS comes with certain limitations. For example, when using a fast aperture and shutter speed (e.g., f/1.4 and 1/4000s), you might get distorted and less attractive bokeh. Similar settings may also result in uneven exposure, where one side of the image appears slightly darker than the other. Furthermore, artificial lighting such as LEDs can induce banding (regardless of the aperture or shutter speed), although it’s not as pronounced as with the standard electronic shutter". I have a A7rIV and I'm looking for a second body for video and when I travel but I'm still not sure between A7Cii and A7IV.. I would prefer weight and dimensions about A7Cii but electronic first-curtain shutter, only 1 slot SD, sync speed... and the same price of A7iv...

Great video, guys! Thank you. The A7IV looks like a more serious camera and easily my preference for from-factor. With Sony's current £300 cash-back deal, it's also better value. I wonder if some of the new Alpha features in these cameras feel a little gimmicky (perhaps more so on the ZV-E1) but your AF results are interesting. If both cameras perform basically the same, surely the A7IV looks/feels better?!

Like we said it's down to personal preference and what you are using it for. If you shooting a lot, the greater comfort of the A7iv is going to be better, but if you are using compact lenses, and shooting infrequently people might prefer the A7cii.

I had brought the A7CII over the A7IV solely because of the pricing and a lighter body on my gimbal. I got a brand new A7CII body at $1690. Frankly, it is simply a no brainer! Btw, thanks for your video, it is very informative!!! 👉👍🙏🙏🙏👍

Moving from APS-C to FF I am on the fence between building A7IV or A7C Il, I love compact size but heard that beefier size is better for ergonomics, stabilising and looks more professional. Would my best option to get A7C lI and buy a battery grip so it gets bulkier similar to A7IV and I can remove it anytime for travel ? Btw I will use prime lenses with it mostly for most bokeh

I held a7cii, even loving the compact and small, but my hands too big to handle it, afraid will drop anytime lol. So unfortunate when I really wanted a7cii size and weight

Great video! Just curious, have you tried out the A7CII with the GP-X2 grip extension? Not cheap, but might address the concerns around the feel-in-hand.

Our presenter actually bought the A7CII and he got the grip, and he said that does help, but it's still not quite as good as the A7iv grip.
