Canon shooter Charl Stols was joined in The Chobe by Marco Bugel who brought with him plenty of the latest Sony cameras and lenses. They tested the Sony A7iv for wildlife to see how it might compare with other brand models like the Canon R6 which Charl is more acquainted with.
Charl is one of the Pangolin Photo Hosts and has been shooting Canon for many years. His review is based on his first impressions of the Sony A7iv for wildlife photographers from the perspective of a Canon user.

Nice, fair and balanced look at a mid range camera from another system. I'm a Sony shooter, but the Z9 and the R3 have some features that I would love too, so I'm just really happy to let the big 3 keep pushing each other, and we reap the rewards!

I'm not a professional photographer and don't have an unlimited budget. The A7iv works just fine for me. Life is a compromise and the A7iv is a very nice compromise. I wish I had a camera that could get 20 fps and a 600mm/f2.8 lens but for that amount of money I could buy a car and that just can't be justified. I think you missed a really key point by neglecting to discuss the buffer size which I think is more important than the difference between 6 and 10 fps. And I think your comments are more applicable to professionals or very rich people and not folks like me who just like to photograph nature. But I was happy to see that your negatives really aren't a player for me. I've got some really nice bird photos that I probably wouldn't have gotten with my old A99ii. And any problem with my travel photos are due to the photographer and not the camera. Thanks for the review. My wife and I are planning on going on safari in Africa in 2024. Even though she is not a photographer, I'm trying to convince her of the benefits of going with Pangolin. Thanks again.

It's about your personal expectations and not about being rich or a pro, the A7IV is good value for the money as I mentioned in the video. But compared to the A1, it's extremely slow and FPS can make the difference between a great shot or just a shot, but if you don't make any money with it, who cares? If that's not a killer criteria for you, then it's perfect and saves you a hell lot of money :-) You should definitely go a plan with Pangolin, they are the best. And what is good for a photographer (nice subjects, in best light possible) is also great for someone who's just looking and enjoying the moment. You won't be disappointed, I promise 🤗 All the best, Marco

nice presentation. i am struggling between having in af-c BBF a flexible spot and when a person or animal is coming, not quick enough to move the spot on the "face detetcted" square so I am interested for a7iv and a7rv new cameras by the "dual BBF" (with AEL in registered area...) method presented on that channel or by the way you make AF in BBF.

I bought the Sony A7IV a few months ago. Mainly due to using it for different things (street, wildlife, landscape etc.) and because of the Sony 200-600mm lens being so good and quite affordable. I would have preferred a Canon camera (due to the better build quality and customer support.. Sony support is abysmal). Canon lenses from what I've seen are so expensive and I am maybe wrong, but there is no third party lenses for Canon mirrorless cameras. The only comparable 'affordable' telephoto lens at 600mm for Canon mirrorless camea is the Sigma 150-600 (for EF mount, so then you still need an adapter).

Two things in common here. Sony support is the most unprofessional I ever encountered. And I should have bought a Canon because I shoot action and the A7iv autofocus is not reliable for this application.

Great review. Should I bring my A9II or A7IV for my safari? Due to weight considerations, I plan to bring one body only. Will use it with the 200-600G and the 100-400GM. Or does it make more sense to just bring the 200-600G with the A7IV and the A9 II as a back up body? Will also be bringing my 1.4TC.

I like how the front dial, rear wheel and four-way selector on the A7iv match well with my R7 and they both have 33 megapixels. That's why I decided to keep the A7iv with my R7 instead of keeping the R6. Also both the A7iv and the R7 can adapt to my large EF prime lenses like the ef 300mm 2.8 without having to spend that huge money for Sony mirrorless primes or RF big primes.

Charl, thanks for your objective and fair review. Same to Marco. Having used the Sony A7M4 and the Sony 100 to 400 GM on a recent stay with Pangolin Safari, I discovered it produced better-quality images than the Pangolin's Canon 80D and the Sigma 150 to 600 contemporary lens they provided guests with. Great to see you giving Marco (our excellent photo host) a promotion. All the best to the Pangolin team.

Hi there, love this review. Would you able to expand more about the viewfinder? You said it's on par with the R6 in use? From past use of an a7III in a camera store, I noticed aliasing on sharp edges, and found it really jittery and jumpy when just looking around and further jumps and jitters when autofocus is engaged. The A7IV avoids such traits? If you disregard the blackout aspect on both cameras, is the A7IV pretty much the same as the A9 then since they share the same EVF specs? Or is the A9II in all-around use smoother and better still. I did use an R6 in that same store, which was so smooth and pleasant to look through and around in general. No jumps or jitters on the R6 when AFC is working and maintained full res, too. Thank you!

You can't compare A9ii with A7IV, that's like racing a Porsche with a Volvo ;-) The EVF of the A7IV is better, but that's about it, maybe the + of Megapixels. But for the rest? A9ii wins in every department ...

I as well shoot an A1 as primary body and on 3 safaris in 2021 I carried the A7sIII as B body. While the 7sIII was an excellent low light and video camera, the resolution was insufficient so I was pleased with the release of the a7iv, which I acquired first day it shipped in US. Took that combo to Tanzania in 2022. First of all, I never shoot the 7iv in electronic shutter owing to rolling shutter, but always shoot the A1 in electronic shutter. I shot a great deal of HLG 4K 60p video with the 7iv and the APS-C crop mode actually minimized the rolling shutter. Also used the 7iv for plants, landscapes and birds/animals where there would be little need for fast continuous frame rates. The A1 is of course the best all around camera for low light and with the stacked sensor and fast read out, rolling shutter issues are minmimal. And it equals the A7sIII in video functionality. But back to the A7iv, I do not like the second still/video/framerate switch, It is hard to access and for me requires 2 actions as I have to switch to video mode and then dial in one of my 3 video presets. But it is a camera that hits far behind its $2500 price range and the perfect B body. I am hoping for a Pangolin Chobe trip and looking forward to mounting my A1+Sony 200-600 on the gimbal and hand holding the 7iv. Very nice review.

Hi Pangolin team,. This is kind of last minute, but I just wanted to ask you which lens should I be carrying on my Masai Mara travel from 2nd-4th Dec. We will be protogtaphing from the game drive vehicle mostly. I use a Canon 60D and plan to rent a lens choices are 1) Canon 70-200mm f2.8 L IS III 2) Canon 100-400mm f 4.5-5.6 L IS II USM ..based on the climate and daylight conditions there which lens do you think is good to carry to capture some decent photos..? Hope to hear from you soon.

If you are not a super keen birder, you rarely need more than 400mm if you're with a good Safari company & guide. A 24-70 F2.8 + 100-400 would cover 95% (apart from birding). Instead of bringing more lenses I would probably think about renting an additional body for the trip, then you have one camera for landscapes and close-ups and one for all the rest. Maybe bring a 1.4x Teleconverter with you, just for the case you'd need more reach. Cheers Marco
