This is a brilliant review, Brandon. You covered all the bases in a way that a working professional can appreciate. Between you, Gerald and Philip, we have been treated to some amazing content surrounding this camera. I should also mention that I love your filmmaking style. It feels fresh and unique which is no small achievement in this day and age. I recently moved back to smaller cameras after running with big setups for years - RED, FS7, Ursa Mini etc. None of them ever made me feel as happy as the A7SIII does. It just gets out of the way. Total creative freedom. And I think that is what a tool should do - empower the creator.

Appreciate that ethics statement more than you could ever know. This rule (should be a law to be honest) should be upheld to a MUCH tighter regard on KZfaq's end. It is disgusting that huge youtubers are able to deceive their millions of subscribers by uploading content that was entirely paid for or sponsored and then playing it off as if its an honest review or a product they picked up with their own money. So thank you for the integrity and here's to hoping that this is the new standard for all youtube content creators.

This is the best way to review gear in my opinion. I find "lab testing" reviews useless especially when it brings into question the credibility of reviewers when all their videos are reviewing gear in their studio and never produce anything with it. Kudos to you Brandon for being the ONLY one showing when AF hunts/not ideal. Despite being exclusively a Sony user for the last few years you showed no hint of bias at all.

Standard profile definitely looks better to my eye than SLog, no matter how you edit it. I find the same thing happens with many cameras. Sometimes those flatter profiles don't necessarily give you more "latitude" as promised, but they're just flatter and softer profile curves. I notice this with the GH5 as well, no matter what approach I take to grading if I shoot their extremely flat Vlog profile I can never quite pull that data back to where the cine-D would have been. Perhaps shooting 12 bit could fix that, but it does beg the question how "flat" of a profile is truly necessary in order to get a good shot. If the standard doesn't look good then there is a good chance it's just not a great shot to begin with.
@rsmith02
@rsmith02 4 жыл бұрын
You need greater skill to deal with log formats. Brandon's not a technical grader or colorist. I'd personally only use it in combination with a technical LUT like Leeming to bring it back to REC 709 and not have to do everything by hand.
@JoshChristiane
@JoshChristiane 4 жыл бұрын
@@rsmith02 Yeah absolutely, it takes a lot more effort, time, and skill. Skill of which even if you do possess it still takes a lot of time and value matching to get right, so for a lot of people it's just not worth the effort when a standard natural or flatter profile out of the camera looks so excellent to begin with. Like CineD on the GH5 for example, or natural flat on the Nikons.

Great Review Brandon, thanks for all the effort going into it!! In regards to the editing performance 7:44 There are 3 Codec Options (XAVC-HS , XAVC-S & XAVC-I) it is a bit of a misconception of a lot of people that these offer different image quality (they might differ slightly in some very fine motion detail like rain or forest leaves). Really these codecs offer different workflow-choices (filesize/editing performance) XAVC-HS is meant to give you small filesize with its efficient compression but the editing performance of it is terrible. XAVC-I will give you great editing performance (similar to ProRes which is an All-Intra Codec aswell) without need for proxies but you'll have really big files (and in scenes with a lot of movement and fine detail the compression could be better). XAVC-S is sort of in the middle: the filesize should be within the other two and the editing performance is not great but allright. So i think you should never choose your framerate depending on the editing performance. It's a creative choice after all and there are plenty of codec options to support your desired workflow.

For me personally one of the best reviews of the camera I’ve seen, enjoyed and been educated. I also love your reality comment at the end. If you need it and can justify it, buy it. If not continue using what you have. 2020 has been incredible for camera releases of all types and I’m sure there are more to come. I’m happy to wait it out a bit but yes I’m so tempted. Bravo.

Next to the very technical reviews of Gerald, this is the way reviews should be done. Tons and tons of great footage in various situations. Thank you for doing this!

This is what I call a review. Very good job, excellent creativity in explaining your point, users like me who look for visual result rather than taking reviewers word. Well done. Subscribed

Hi, Could you please clarify for me(sorry if it's a dummy question ). Could this camera film a crisp, sharp video, not only a cinematic look?(it looks too soft to me). For example like on this video "Canon EOS R6 Sample Video #1: 4K UHD, 30p" (32sec video) And what do you think is it good for filming fast-moving objects like fighter jets?

Love especially the thumbnail shot in the white desert. The separation between subject and background is amazingly neutral and the images in the whole review have a really good depth and dimensional feel (not just screaming for bokeh). In the right hand almost every camera can look good, but it seems the A7sIII really is a tool that even those with "the right hands" can still tickle out more detail and flair every time they use it. It´s amazing for how small it is and while cine cameras take the cake, as well as some of the R5 8K RAW and such, the fact that this camera is one of the "cheaper" options while maintaining such a small form factor is amazing - even if it´s not "THE BEST". But tbh, even if people say different, 95% of them still wouldn´t or couldn´t use the full potential anyway - me included.
