Hands on review of the Sony A8G OLED 4k HDR TV
The Sony A8G is a remarkable OLED TV that delivers excellent picture quality. Like all OLED TVs, the A8G has an emissive technology that allows it to display perfect blacks by switching off individual pixels. In this review, we compare it to 3 other popular models.
Full review:

The Sony A8G/AG8 OLED delivers outstanding dark room performance, thanks its ability to produce perfect blacks and perfect black uniformity. It also has a nearly-instantaneous response time, delivering crystal-clear motion with almost no noticeable blur behind fast-moving objects. This lack of blur can bother some people, though, as it results in stutter when watching movies or other low frame rate content. Unfortunately, like all OLEDs, there is a possibility of burn-in with static content, and the brightness of the screen changes depending on the content, also known as ABL, which may bother some people.
Model tested: 55” (XBR55A8G)
Should also be valid for 65” (XBR65A8G)

Thanks for the review. I love my Sony A8G, and use it exclusively for streaming and occasional gaming. I only use a ps4 pro, and no other device, nor do I use the built in android interface (which quite honestly no one should be using if they want to take advantage of the 4K resolution) The PS4 Pro does make a difference in the picture quality compared to just a regular PS4. The cons which were mentioned in the review are all non-factors for me. The sound is simply good, for lack of giving an overstated description such as “amazing” or “incredible”. The bass is ambient, but with modesty. The key to getting the most out of this TV is calibrating it yourself. You’ll find that perfect configuration from trial and error. One wish I have for Sony would be to get rid of the Auto Brightness Limiter ABL, which darkens the entire screen during scenes when there’s a bright background covering the entire set. Notably scenes with mostly bright skies (think Pixar’s Up) and when there’s all white. Seriously get rid of ABL, because I would rather enjoy a fully vibrant picture. Deducting 3/4 point because of ABL, but overall the TV I would rate 4.25 out of 5.

Rtings, I have a 2016 Vizio 8 Bit 4k TV (with no HDR) connected to a PS4 Pro. The Pro says my TV supports RGB so I select it but the Deep Color toggle doesn't flicker the TV when turned on or off. Just want to know what is going on. Please, I need someone to explain this. You all are the best and the most meticulous! Thank you.

I game with a PS4Pro but I have a 4k monitor so won't use much, my mine use of the TV is watching Netflix, Now TV through a Roku 4k streaming stick. I guess my question which one would give me better upscaleling? Currently I have a Samsung 50inc 1080p so both we give me a awsome upgrade.

@3dgelord187

Those OLED black levels are so worth it. Yes, burn-in is real but with the 2018 and 2019 OLED lines, burn-in is considerably less of an issue than it used to be. Added with a little proper TLC on behalf the owner and your OLED will be perfectly fine. QLEDs are really good, don't get me wrong, but those details that are brought out by an OLED in some scenes is like another world.

It all sounds like the new Samsung lineup has an improved black color presentation. Now they are confident enough to play videos with black backgrounds in the retail mode. However, it seems like their anti-bleak coating have created some issues in the overall picture quality making content look even less realistic than before. I can’t get why Sony’s TVs have higher input lags while the company produces game consoles. They could get PlayStation users to buy their TVs so easily. When I compared Sony and LG’s models last year, I really liked Sony’s picture so much more as it looked much sharper for some reason. Maybe LG’s presentation videos were filmed poorly. That being said, I still couldn’t get over Sony’s price tags, input lag, the remote, the interface, and the tilted screen...

Sony's don't work for me because I need the VESA screw holes to be located lower on the back of the TV so I can have more clearance below the TV when I mount it to the metal mast on my TV stand. I need about 14 inches of clearance between the bottom of my TV and the top shelf of my TV stand. TCLs, Hisense, and LG OLED are the only TVs that have the lower VESA screw hole location. So I bought a LG OLED 55" B8 from Crutchfield about four weeks ago for $1,000. If I see a C9 at a really low price before my return window closes I could exchange for the upgrade.

Reviewers act like everyone streams their Content! Two ports, one of which is HDMI Arc so unless your Audio system has HDMI inputs you only have ONE! If you are a true gamer you’ll probably have both an XBox and PS4. You are buying a tv like this you probably have a 4k HDR Player or Streaming Device like an Roku Ultimate or something. For typical usage of an end user with mixed usage, it shouldn't be an issue. Current OLED has a lot of features to help with burn in.
