Sony is known for making the PlayStation along with televisions and audio devices but there's other parts to their business that we may overlook. They're actually one of the biggest and most diverse companies out there. This video attempts to give a picture of how Sony was formed and what they look like today.

@@boukharroubamabrouk6943 patents basically secure/trademark/copyright-prodect an idea for future products. Which means if a company wants to release a product that is close to your idea (in the region where your patent is activated) they would need your permission or a licence from SONY, if they do not agree with SONY they can easily be sued for patent infringement. So SONY could just license their patents and take in royalty payment e.g 20% of profits or a fixed price like 20millions $ for license deal

@@dougiebuckets1364 Really? Ive heard of medical/pharmaceutical patents having limits but electronic or company patents too? If that were the case why do game controller makers have to do a work around when constructing their directional pad? Nintendo has owned the patent since the 70's or 80's for a simple d pad, and because of this any makers of controllers must find a work around Or if possible pay Nintendo. I remember this was the same reason PS3 game pads had no rumble at first, then they finally agreed to pay for the license for rumble, anyway I don't know if they have time limits to or not.

You must not have a clue how big Microsoft is in the Corporate Market. They make billions off licensing Windows to companies which for the most part use all Microsoft products. Rarely do you see Apple or Linux in a non tech centered company like software development or systems security. And then all the server side stuff you never see like Azure, that runs the internet. They are still huge. Maybe not in the gaming market but they have a lock down on Software products like no other company. Even Apple relies on Microsoft to release Microsoft Word for Apple's operating systems. Think of how every computer comes with Windows, well Asus or Acer or HP all pay Microsoft to put Windows on their hardware. Fats sums of money too. Dell has deviated and offers Linux Ubuntu as an option now but for the longest time, every single PC came with a windows license aside from Apple hardware, in most cases you cant even avoid paying for Windows, even when you plan on uninstalling it for Linux, it's already in the cost. Also, they are huge in the IOT sector and make a lot of integrated systems that you don't see as a consumer. Apple might make more money but Microsoft is way more prevalent in the IT market whereas Apple has a tight lock down on the design focused consumer market and mobile markets. I work for the government in Canada and you wouldn't imagine the amount of money we pay Microsoft for licensing and ongoing support of their products like extended warranties each year. Plus if it wasn't for Microsoft Apple would have never made it big. DOS was licensed to apple for a period meaning Apple Hardware ran a Microsoft operating systems for a good part of it's beginning until they made their own operating systems.

Iirc Nintendo hired them to make what may have been the N64 but Sony wanted to use Disc drives instead of cartridges. Nintendo said no and made the N64 where as Sony just made the Playstation 1 with a few games. I forget what exactly made it take off but I think it was a combination of Devs liking working with it more because it wasn't as limited as an N64 cartridge and it had better games. I checked a chart I saw once and it was more expensive and the size difference wasn't to huge. It did have head start though.

M7 S4i5l8v2a your close it was supposed to be a CD add on to the Super Nintendo like the SEGA CD but at the last minute when Sony was showing the prototype at a CES Nintendo changed their mind letting Phillips make it instead which pissed Sony off and they used the prototype to develop the PlayStation.
@AllieRX
@AllieRX 5 жыл бұрын
@@M7S4I5L8V2A No Nintendo initially worked with Sony to make a CD-ROM attachment for their upcoming Super Famicom and Super Nintendo, mainly to compete with NEC's PC Engine, which already had a CD-ROM attachment by the time the Super Famicom/SNES was in development. Then Nintendo wasn't happy with the fact that Sony agreed to get all the money from the CD-ROM add-on, so they dropped them in favor of Philips. The Nintendo/Philips collaboration failed as well, so Philips made their own console called the CD-i and it had some of the worst games ever with Nintendo characters. And we all know what Sony did afterwards.

My personal feeling after living in Japan for a decade and a half and having them as a client over several years is that Sony is struggling to survive within a massively over-sized "suit", which was needed at their peak, with a shrunken body (i.e., a good chunk of successful businesses are no longer part of Sony). External and internal factors have prevented them to get a better-fitting suit to compete with global rivals. Japanese labor laws, although relaxed recently, still make it difficult for employers to fire payrolled employees. This and Sony's lack of competency in moving forward in drastically changing their fragmented structure to a more cohesive one (merging their core competencies closer to each other) has prevented them to show their true colors. Many Sony employees still see former CEO Stringer as a guy who couldn't walk the talk. Large companies, especially in Japan, are afraid of overhauls because they will bring many uncertainties and affect employees' well-being in their daily lives. Also, profitable business arms like Sony Life (life insurance) and Sony Sonpo (auto insurance) are completely different entities and I highly doubt they'd be interested in merging operations under a hypothetical company like "Sony Insurance". They are happy with their successes and have no interest in wrecking that harmony. They have a point. Why fix something that's not broken for the sake of a corporate vision. This doesn't mean that other Sony entities shouldn't collaborate more. Imagine a cohesive line-up of mobile/non-mobile device ecosystem that's part Xperia Android smartphone, part PlayStation that can project the screen on a large flat screen, part high-res LDAP audio/video content player that makes Sony Pictures and Sony Music easily available, a high-end camera technology derived from the Sony Alpha DSLR/full-frame mirrorless camera line, an industry-leading noise-canceling earphone/headphone included....all insured by Sony's insurance arm. I've lost my love for the company over a decade ago, but products with an integrated Sony ecosystem will raise eyebrows. There might be a time when Sony truly internalizes its existential problem and make significant efforts for a turn-around, but it might be too late for them to regain its global leadership like in their heydays. They have a lot of recipes. Let's see if they can cook up something amazing.

It true what you say. What os holding Sony back is their lack of diversity. Not that they are not diversed at all, but they always stay true to their roots ie. Electonic and Home intertainment. The future is IT-Services, Software and AI. The Electronik market is oversaturated with Samsung, apple, Google, LG etc no there is a lot competition. I hope for them that they diversify a lot for their own good considering the improving quality of chinese tech manufacturer at cheap prices

@@compaqdeskpro5770 Sony in America is also eager to fire people, burn the whole thing down and jump ship. Sony DADC here has fired nearly all of their full time employees and outsourced most of their production/packaging to Mexico. Last I heard they only had one line running with just a handful of temp/seasonal's. They just auctioned off a ton of equipment and the plants are almost empty. They used to be an awesome company that cared about quality products and its employee's but now it's just numbers and the bottom line. Back in the late 00's they started changing for the worse and started losing contracts due to poor quality/defective products. It really is a shame because they employed a lot of this town and people would drive 50 to 100 miles to work here and now it's just a bunch of big empty buildings with a few cars in one of the parking lots. I don't want to see them go down but the physical media side is on its way out though.
@Hiro-xr3zu

@compaq deskpro Thank you for the comment. I agree that employee protection is important, but finding the right power balance is critical. Giving too much power to employers will result in lack of job security and trust held by employees. In the US (not sure about other countries), not only are full-time employees easily fired and hired, but temporary staff members are being used as buffers for seasonal and project-based workload peaks. There was a recent CultofMac article about Apple's treatment of temp workers. The article is titled "‘Culture of fear’ dominates Apple’s secretive satellite office". It's abhorrent. Very much worth a read. (e.g. There's a story about Apple employees and temp workers having segregated restrooms. Temp staff members have to wait in line to use the restroom because temps significantly outnumber full-time Apple employees.) As me3333 mentions, it's awful what's going on in Sony DADC. This is why the notion of corporate loyalty is absent in the US. Japan's heading the same way because the age-old concept of "lifetime employment" and secure pensions are withering away. Large corporations were employees' social security system, but that's going away. A real-life example is how I've met many taxi drivers (most of them earn about $17K-$20K per annum) and a good number of them used to be executives in Japanese companies. Their pensions from their former employers are non-existent and social security payments aren't enough to survive. It's sad when I see those drivers tell me how they don't throw away their empty tiny coffee drink cans that are sold for $1.50 at vending machines and refill them at home every morning because they want to keep their dignity by appearing as though they can afford new coffee drinks every day. Also telling is how Sony has subsidiaries that accompany "non-effective workers" in entities like Sony Global Solutions. I’ve heard from someone who was a client of his. He claims to have seen multiple floors having endless rows of desks with late-40 through early-60 employees silently typing seemingly conducting mind-numbing data entry tasks into Excel spreadsheets. I've heard from a current Sony HQ employee that SGS is treated as a place where employees with low productivity are sent to. It's a sad story. Sony is also famous for having a "Career Improvement Training Center", which is a euphemism for "indirectly" firing people. It's located in the old Sony HQ building and low-performing employees are told to get "re-educated" at the Training Center. What takes place is appalling. Sony can't outright fire employees. Workers deemed unnecessary are sent there with significantly reduced pay and are given remedial tasks every day like how to use Outlook and Excel effectively. They are also persuaded to find jobs outside of Sony every day by looking through classified ads. The goal is to make their lives so miserable that they quit the company on their own accord. Many of them end up suffering from depression....sometimes much worse. Sony can deny responsibility and claim that they have this training center to help employees in need and that they did their best in "helping" the underperforming workers. There's a dirty side to every company. Sony is no exception.

@@ulrichleukam1068 Thank you for your reply. As you say, sticking to one's roots is important, but hanging on too long to something that is clearly no longer valid is harmful. Sony has admitted to sticking with their Trinitron CRT technology way too long and not taking risks in investing in LCD panel fabrication. The Korean companies saw this as an opportunity and the rest is history. By the time, Sony formed a strategic alliance with LG, Sony was way too late to get into the game. I completely agree with your statement about the future. But, Sony does not have competitiveness in any of those fields. Software has been a weakness for Sony because they've relied on hardware for such a long time. Of course, SCE (Sony Computer Entertainment) do have some as do other subsidiaries, but software does not define who they are. I have seen unsuccessful efforts in the software realm. They tried developing their version of a paid-version of KZfaq that specializes in high-definition, but that never took off. It was market-irrelevant. My hope is that Sony will hang on to roots that are relevant today and in the near future while taking on risks using their many in-house assets held by subsidiaries.

Don't forget to mention their abusive advertising practices and attempts to establish monopolies! At least once a week, there's an envelope in my mailbox addressed to "Our Neighbor At:," or something to that effect, with no info on the outside as to who it's from, and it's always an AT&T advertisement. They also have misleading titles for their internet packages, which end up being much slower than expected, and do their best to sign you up for other, unrelated services offered by other companies. SCREW AT&T AND ALL COMPANIES ASSOCIATED WITH THEM.

@@Dave102693 Two different companies now. "at&t" is the cellphone business (DeathStar logo), while "AT&T" is most everything else. Most people don't know the subtle difference. Sort of how Motorola broke up many years ago into two separate companies ("sectors") but you wouldn't know unless you paid close attention.

I love SONY! Some of my fondest childhood memories revolve around SONY products. I still remember when my dad was teaching me how to fix VCR's with our old SONY one which led me to tinker around with other tech. I will always be a SONY customer simply due to the fact that they are a quality company with quality products. I'm lowkey thinking about buying their new Walkman. Fun fact: I have been using SONY phones since the SONY Xperia PLAY! :D

Just feel they are a bit off on what the consumer wants these days, but still make the best looking phones

10:44 - How about how they own the Blu-Ray format, used to own the DVD and Compact Disc standards and the 3.5 in. floppy disk format? There was a time when if you had a movie on DVD or an album on CD, no matter what the studio or the label, everyone had to pay SONY a royalty. SONY Memory Stick was also an enormous sensation that changed everything. Perhaps for brevity or focus or to concentrate on current product versus historic product, but part of why SONY is down to 97 in rank from high flying days is because of so many more businesses -- HUGE businesses -- that you just skipped over. Your title affirms that SONY is Bigger Than [We] Know but you still didn't cover even half of it. You totally glossed over their world dominance with the Walkman and later the Discman (essentially the precursors to the iPod) or their near monopoly of high end displays with their Trinitron division. Or how about how there was a point in time that if you were to shoot HD video, you HAD to pay SONY. Their Broadcast division used to have a total lock on HD. They also acquired Tribune Media (then Tribune Broadcasting) and used to own TV stations all over the world. How about the fact that they own the music catalogues of some of the most famous music in the world including the entire Beatles catalogue. They're in electric cars. They sold their battery division but only to buy another battery manufacturer. You touched on VAIO a little bit but there was a time that it was the leading multimedia PC in the world. SONY almost acquired Apple and could've owned the whole thing at the height of VAIO. Bottom line, you did not even scratch the surface on how big SONY is. Keep in mind, that's just talking about what they own outright, they have joint ventures of all kinds plus they operate one of the world's largest, most powerful, and most influential "keiretsu" operations with their hands in the management of just about every company and every industry in Japan and parts of Europe. Perhaps, after all, SONY is bigger than YOU know.

Most of the old devices my family used from 2000-10 are Sony, such as CRT, DVD player and a walkman. Nowadays, we use other brands such as Samsung, LG for TVs, Apple for iPhones and Dell, Microsoft for laptops, forgetting that Sony began to fell behind by smaller and younger competitors at that time. The only Sony product I recently have is a PS4 which I got it for my birthday when I turned 12, in which I'm the only person in my family who has purchased a modern Sony product thats released after 2013

Its pretty bigger than we know, from tv, to videogames, to movies, to music, to electronics, Sony is still one of the largest companies of entertainment and services alike of all time, in which they make a lot of money from their subsidiaries and brands, some of them have struggled yes, but looking at the chart you showed, they've slowly getting better, Columbia Pictures (love it or hate it) is one of the biggest movie-studios in the industry, with almost 13 Academy Awards of Best Picture nominations under Sony, as well as their sister studios of TriStar (with 5 BP Noms) and Screen Gems, that still make content and revenue under Sony Pictures Entertainment with a high revenue of 9.133 billion; same can be said with their music division, Sony Music Entertainment, with a high revenue of 7.27 billion coming from their flagship labels of Columbia Records, Epic Records, RCA Records and the recently revived Arista Records with a large numbers of successful artists and multiple Grammy Award nominations and wins, so in other words, its a huge entertainment company
