When we first reviewed Sony's HT-A9 home theater system, we were extremely impressed. Now, Sony has introduced a brand new version, the Sony BRAVIA Theater Quad. With an updated look, new technology inside, and a better wireless connection, does this system have what it takes to bring that movie theater feel into your living room?

Good review, had mine for over 3 weeks now, have it paired with SW5 and very impressed, had my A9's for 2 years and enjoyed them very much and only had the occasional drop out. The sound is way beyond what the A9's produced. Very happy with the product and so is the wife especially when it comes to voice clarity , yes it's more money than I wanted to spend but selling my A9's helped in that area.

The introduction of the mid range driver has helped massively. The fact that the quads are using 360 mapping V2 has also made a very big difference, it really brings the subwoofer to life which seemed flat on the originals.

Greetings from India. I’m using the HTA 9 ( with a 75inch inch Sony TV) for over an year now and my experience has been nothing but exceptional. No drop outs at all ( which I resolved by resetting the setup again) and the dialogue is spectacular. I love the minimalist icon look and the lack of wires. A clean look and I’m wondering if it’s worth an upgrade to M2? In India, we get very good prices for used systems especially if it’s a Sony.

Finally a design that doesn’t pretend to be something it’s not. Good looking, tasteful grill material and small enough to place accurately and easily. If it sounds as good as it looks it will be a hit. Just wish they went with a 4 1/2” or even a 5” woofer for fuller sound.

Always like this system because you get great soundstage since all the drivers aren't contained in a single box (bar) like a soundbar Wonder how well it does surround left / right and wide left / right without side firing drivers Was the rears facing forward or facing towards the listening position when you tested?

Calling these 3 way speakers is kinda misleading. Usually 3-way speakers are full range speakers, that is their is a tweeter for the highs, a Mid driver for the mids, and a subwoofer for the low end sounds. A full range speaker should play between 20-28,000hz. I don't think the Quad can play anywhere close to 20hz even with the SW5 subwoofer (I think it's closer to 40hz with the SW5). Bigger speakers will always have an advantage over smaller speakers, its a physics issue, sound processing can help and has helped a lot. I have the A9, and for simplicity the A9 is amazing, but if you are used to good quality towers, you will notice the trade offs and how Sony used their amazing processing to make the A9's sound magical. Their were 2 big issues with the A9 that drive me nuts (especially as its such an expensive systems), first the drop outs. They don't happen all the time, but when they do you really notice it especially in the dialog, and it happens so spontaneous you don't know if its the source material or the signal or what, but its always the A9 dropping one of the speakers for a period of time and then reconnecting. The 2nd issue is the lack of mid level. If you are coming from a system like a good pair of towers or bookshelf speakers or 5.1 with a receiver, you probably will notice the sound is not as good. If you are coming from listening to your TV speakers than the A9 or Quad or just about any sound bar will blow your TV speakers away. The A9/Quad is a fantastic solution to get amazing sound in any room with ease. Still wish it had a proper center.

When a speaker is 3-way, it isn't even implied that the bass speaker gets down low to 20Hz. There are 3-way bookshelves that only go down to 60Hz or higher. Doesn't make them not a 3-way. They still need a sub. Plus, small bookshelves crossed over to a sub often perform better than larger floor standers that go lower.
@AudioAdvice
@AudioAdvice Ай бұрын
We totally agree separate components are better. We had zero drop outs in our testing with these, which is great news. A three way speaker however is any speaker that has 2 crossovers. It does not refer to their frequency response, simply the fact there are three drivers each getting different frequencies. Thanks for watching

I have 2 monitornaudio silver 50 speakers and was looking at a sony taan1000 avr with the monitor dedicated speakers 2 of which will be in ceiling. So i am curious would the new 360 spacial 5.1.2 avr with good speakers be much better than the quad. I don't mind running wires in if it is alot better. If not much in it I could sell the monitors and put towards the quads. It's for both tv and music. Thanks

In our testing, we found the best results to have them slightly toed towards the main listening position for the front and back. However, it's a very minimal difference if you have them straight in line with your TV and we actually like that way because it looks much better. Getting them in more ideal locations like equidistant and the same height from your listening position will be more important than if they are flat or slightly angled.

How would you say this with the sw5 compare to the Sonos Arc + era 300 + two subs?
@S1mmz
@S1mmz Ай бұрын
It's better than the Sonos setup. Id say the sub is still better for the Sonos but if you can place the speakers 2.5-3m apart then you'll get miles better spatialness than the Sonos just can't compete with. Sonos obviously has their new soundbar out in Q4 which should take things to the next level and help excel the era 300's to new heights as these are personally too powerful for the Arc. Although, I still doubt Sonos will add DTS:HD/X or IMAX enhanced to their codec list.

Great question! The Sony might be more versatile in terms of being able to mount them flush to the wall and place them where you need to. However, the Sonos might beat it out in overall sound quality? We will have to do some more comparisons ourself. It could come down to personal preference.

@S1mmz
@S1mmz Ай бұрын
Dragon will have the raw power but it's more heavy front facing and less balanced but some people prefer that. The Sony's are more accurate and neutral sounding like how wired separates are. The area soundbars just can't compete is how wide you can place the system. If you can't place them at least 2.5m-3m apart then I'd just go with a soundbar setup, however, if you can it's really where you find it makes a difference and for me personally bests every soundbar.

@@AudioAdvice Thanks. Just so you are aware you have some false information on the video. Voice zoom 3 can't be used standalone on the Quads. What you switched on was just plain standard voice enhancement. To use voice zoom 3 you have to use a compatible TV and it's only available on the A95L and the new 2024 Bravia TVs. You change the setting itself directly on the TV and it has around 6 different volume levels for the voices just for reference. Also, the new center sync unfortunately isn't compatible with your TV model, hence why it wouldn't have sounded great as the TV and speakers play independently on that model just like they did on the original A9's. On the newer models the TV gets calibrated with the quads and they play in unison, so it sounds much better. This is actually available back to 2021 models, however, it will still sound miles better on say the A95L or the Bravia 9. Which leads me to my next question could you possibly test the A95L and the Bravia 9 with the center sync and see which performs better. Obviously the OLED the whole speaker is the screen whereas the Bravia 9 uses Beam tweeters behind on the sides but also has up-firing ones, so it would be interesting to see which performs the best. Thanks a lot & for the review.
@AudioAdvice
@AudioAdvice Ай бұрын
Thanks for the info! We appreciate the feedback. You are correct and we should have more clearly stated that it is only available on the new Sony TV's. The same goes for the acoustic center sync. Like we said, we didn't get great results but we should have additionally mentioned that the newer models can sync together which may give a better result. We are hoping in the future to try this feature again with the Bravia 9 and A95L and see how much of a difference it truly makes, if any at all. We have a feeling even with the new models, it wont stand up to the quality of the other speakers, but maybe Sony can impress us and prove us wrong! Again, thanks for the feedback 👍

Personal preference really. A9's look better on stands, quads look better wall mounted. However, sound quality wise with the new mid-range driver and better woofer there's no contest, the quads just excel much greater in that area. I always found the original to be a bit tinny sounding, whereas these give a much fuller range. The subwoofer has also come much more to life with the new V2 360 mapping and then gaining IMAX enhanced certification for it. Take away the drop outs and the fact you can actually hide the control box in a cupboard with no issues, alongside the new upscaling setting they have, I'd say it is a worthy upgrade.
