In this video, I will show you how to make your own filter adapter ring for the Sony HX1 camera. This project requires some custom work but it's also very cheap to make. You will need a 55-58mm step up ring. You can find one on Ebay at around $2 USD. I also purchased a 58mm UV filter to put on the adapter ring. This filter I also purchased on Ebay for $2.
The custom part of the project is to glue a thin piece of rubber to the inside of the step up ring. This serves 2 purpose. One is to fill in the gap and the other is to allow the step up ring to fit snug to the Sony lens. With the rubber piece I used, I was able to use sand paper to sand it down to the correct diameter.

Thanks for this great post. I've just made one of these. It looks and works great. Definitely use a 55-58mm step-up ring - around £2.90 on ebay. For the rubber - an old bicycle inner tube works fine with no sanding necessary. In use - there's no vignetting with 1 filter attached - no vignetting with 2 filters attached - however if you stick a 3rd filter on then there's slight vignetting at the wide angle end of the lense - so just tap the zoom lever to around 1.2X and the vignetting dissappears.

Very smart solution!!! I would recommend to zoom in before pushing the adapter, so the lens barrel goes out and you can firmly grab the lens barrel with one hand and the filter adapter with the other hand. That is to prevent to push the adapter ring, transmitting the applied force to the internal mechanism of the zoom lens.

@Spacoom2 - the original HX1 lens is not threaded for any particular size. That's why most people are selling or making custom adapters. If you measure the lens diameter its approx 52mm.

And I can imagine that some kind of o-ring joined to the adapter ring with some adhesive could do also a great job, and would also look better. Thanks for the adapter idez. I will try it myself. Best regards.

@felipe05061996 This adapter is mainly used for adding a filter on the lens. It's not meant to add lens to the permanently mounted sony lens on this camera.

@00viraj It's been awhile since I did this, but I think 52 mght be a tight fit and these adapter rings don't give you a lot of materials to work with if you plan on sanding it down. If you pick up some adapter ring for cheap on ebay, then you can try it.

i have hx 200v. is it same for hx 200v? means does it need 55-58mm step up?

i'm confused, my hx1 lens have 50mm, so a 52 to 58mm will fit ?

I want to do the same ... I guess u have used a 55mm and used a rubber glued for a snug fit..... can i use a 52-58mm and just sand it with my drill ??
