Like I'm sure many other keyboard warriors like me needlessly correcting you, The European launch PS3s weren't just emulation, they were a weird mix of both some emulation and real PS2 hardware inside the PS3 PS3 models are CECH*, the * being the generation I guess The model A is what you have, it has an entire PS2 inside it and is 99.9% ps2 compatible, since it basically is one The model B was the same, but without wifi and less space The model C was what we got in Europe and other PAL territories, it didn't come out in NTSC land. The model C has the real PlayStation 2 hardware inside it, except for the PS2's emotion engine CPU. Instead the powerful PS3 cell CPU would emulate the PS2's CPU so it uses what's called partial emulation. These are like 95% PS2 compatible (and some people argue they are better for PS2 than the model A and B since the performance of the emulated ps2 CPU is sometimes faster then the real thing lol). We didn't get the model A or B in Europe unfortunately, only the C The model D got axed before release The model E is the emulation one you're thinking of in this video, with the 80gb HDD. This one is only around 80% ps2 compatible and has issues and such from my understanding. The model F also got cancelled before release The model G had no PS2 hardware or software emulation and 0% ps2 compatibility, and had the cost cuttings of two USB ports and no card readers and no chrome trim, but interestingly still has the original PS3 hardware the earlier ones had, just lacking PS2 essentially The model H and later are very redesigned inside, using revised PS3 hardware, and have the ports on the left rather than the right, have only 16mb of internal storage, while the ones before all had 256mb of storage (and at one point could be used without a hard drive!), and many other cost cutting things. No more ps2 :( but yeah the European model C was partial emulation, partial real hardware. Far better than fully emulated, tho not the best. The model A and B still remain the best, and we didn't get them unfortunately :')

In a way our PS3's still sucked because of the region locking on PS1/2 games so we stuck with 50hz for most games which is not even remotely good tbh.

Ah, I remember that first year of PS3. There were very few PS3 games at the time, but I didn't mind since it was backwards compatible and I had skipped most of the previous gen. I picked up Resident Evil 4, FF XII, God of War I and II, Metal Gear Solid III...all for cheap at that point. For me there was no game drought because there were so many games to play until the PS3 titles started to pick up steam.

One good thing about the fat PS3 is that even if they do die we now know what causes it and it's relatively easy to fix if you can solder. I already repaired my 40GB PS3 and it was so nostalgic seeing it come back to life with all the games the way I had them. If you are interested to learn about it search for NEC/TOKIN capacitor repair, it's essentially a couple faulty capacitors that cause the console to die in most cases.

@Araxtos

Yeah of course it could be something else that fails, as in any device. But in a lot of cases that was the cause for it. Problem is that a lot of people did that stupid solution were you put your motherboard into an oven, which caused more wear on the poor consoles. Eventually all hardware will die but this is a cheap fix that's worth trying at least.
@televisionandcheese

Yeah while not all YLOD are because of the NEC caps, it's great since it is a large majority of them, and being relatively easy to do and a lasting fix is great :)

@The tricky tick Actually, if RSX die you still can replace it with one form a newer model, on better transistor node аnd add mod chip to boot it again. So even if your OG PS3 BC die and reballing didn't work you have an option. And those ps3 are no longer widely available, so at some point we will have to start transplant RSXs "Artificial" on youtube have a video about it

I recently got my hands on a couple of fat PS3's that were used for software development and never touched the Internet or any updates and were sitting in a cabinet since 2008. I pulled those HDDs out and slapped some 500GB SSDs and put CFW on them...then I loaded up that SSD so quick...had to get a USB drive for smaller games. // Due to being a broke college student and later getting a 360 instead, I have an entire backlog of PS3 games I get to enjoy.

I've had my hacked PS3 for about 3 or 4 years, so I've had quite a bit of time to figure the system inside and out. I've had no issue using external drives for PS3 games in either ISO or folder format. They run about the same as my internal 1TB. I have a 500GB Goflex drive formatted to FAT32 with one USB connection. There were no power problems. Also wanted you to know, I've used burned discs when ripping PS2 ISOs to my PS3 with no problems. You can also customize the PS3 boot up. I replaced the EvilNat boot up with the original 2006 boot up and sounds. Also restored the original game boot screen after selecting PS3 software.

I use this kind of stuff to backup the phisical games as isos on the computer to check if the discs are ok. also, for preservation. a hacked ps3 allows you to install the patches from other sources. sooner or later the servers will be offline so even if you have the disc you'll have a buggy or incomplete game. we are lucky the community does more for preservation than the companies themselves.

I played gof of war 2 and silent hill 1(psx version) (both ISOs) on a modded hen ps3 super slim and they ran like a charm and the console didn't get overheated or anything, so for two of the most demanding ps2 and ps games it emulates them pretty nicely

If you run them through Irisman, the ISOs run on the Emotion Engine and runs like you're playing on a disc. How PS2 games normally look when in full screen mode. Running forgeign ISOs through Irisman doesn't work really. The HDMI signal goes out. But when you run the ISOs through webMan mod, the PS2 games run through ps2_netemu (an emulator based on PS2 Classics not the the BC 80GB ps2_gxemu) which makes it think the ISO is a PS2 Classic. The picture is also in widescreen, in 16:9. I never bought a PS2 Classic, but yea. With this on the home menu, it shows the Cell/RSX temp. I don't know, I just found this interesting about how PS2 games run depending on if it's the integrated PS2 hardware system-on-a-chip EE, or through a pure emulator like ps2_netemu. As a result, ps2_netemu doesn't read PS2 discs at all. Also with ps2_netemu I can't go online, but I can go online if ran like a disc via the EE+GS apparently. What's great though about ps2_netemu, is that because of the modding/jailbreaking community it has better backwards compatibity than the first gen 80GB which uses ps2_gxemu. The 80GB has around 80%-85% backwards compatbility, whereas now ps2_netemu has around 98% backwards compatibility. It's all code, and the netemu code has gotten better than the original emulation code of gxemu by Sony. With ps2netemu, it's pretty much now near impossible to find a PS2 game that doesn't work. I ran Spartan: Total Warrior and it works, unlike what the PS3 PS2 compatibility list that says "No - freezes and out of sync audio on opening cutscene." I get passed the opening scene.

Webmans most important feature is manually set the fan speed when reaching threshold over certain temperature. Also I read somewhere that the YLOD could happen if you turn off the ps3 right after gaming session, and therefore the fans cannot cool down the system and it overheats. I leave my on for one hour afterwards just to be safe, with the power save 1 hour feature.

@@fernandomartinez4486 well, I thought that was crazy as well at first - but actually the reason it's 1 hour is because that's the shortest time before the PS3 will automatically shut down using the Power Save feature. So basically, the fan only really needs to run for probably 5 - 10 minutes after you're done playing a game for the system to go back to a normal temperature

That glitch about empty space is not actually a glitch. When you are deleting something you need to let console do it for a minute or two. It needs to be idle with multiman loaded ( mmc... software ) or in main dashboard. When it is done deleting it will refresh page so you will know it finished. Same with ftp, it needs a minute or two to delete files. Since you got your games ripped in iso format it might take longer. I recommend using copy function. It just creates folder and copy data from disc into that folder, and its faster, loads better.

Hi! The launch Model of the PS3 in Europe was a bit weird, the PS3 had either the PS2 CPU or GPU (I can't remember which) and the other chip was emulated. While this means it does have much better compatibility than full software emulation, it doesn't support all PS2 games. This also means un-modded Launch PS3s in Europe can also play PS2 games, unlike the consoles that software emulate which can't play ps2 games anymore. Hopefully, this clarifies the info about EU launch PS3s :) Edit: For some reason, I put RSX instead of GPU
@Jivemaster2005

Yeah .. the launch model in Europe was the CECHC0x models which only had the PS2 GPU, they also removed the PS2 32MB RAMBUS memory. THE PS" CPU was emulated by the PS3 CPU

I have a CECHC04 with the PS2 GPU and the compatibility from known lists is around 90%, the real problem is the glitches. Hitman Contracts or Ratchet & Clank have framerate problems and Burnout 2 has a minor graphical bug. Any PS2 game that I tried to run works though, just expect some bugs in a couple of them. This is where converting your PS2 discs into PKGs with config files helps, some of them can be fixed. Sort of like the PS2 compatibility on jailbroken PS4s, you can make over 500 games playable thanks to hacky code. Anyway, I much prefer to use my modded PS2 instead so I don't have to worry about the PS3 going toast.

That's simply not true. To quote another user: Here in Europe our Launch PS3 was running PS2 games only partly by emulation since there was still the Graphics Synthesizer (PS2 GPU) Build in, and the Emotion Engine was handled by the CELL CPU. The difference is the Japanese/American launch units used 100% hardware, the European units were a mix, like our 80 GB PS3s.

I repasted it thinking it would work and it instantly overheated. that's when I googled and found out that I needed to delid the CPU and GPU and that was a process. It sat for almost a year until i finally decided that i was either going to fix it or break it. So i ended up fixing it by deliding the CPU and GPU and now it works perfectly. It works so good that you can hardly hear the fans now. However during this last year I found out that most of the games i was playing are playable on the RPCS3 emulator and run great on my 9900k at 4k 60fps upscaled. So i mostly play them that way now. but at least it works.

I play my PS3 game disk image files through my LAN, which are stored on my PC upstairs and any PS3 games that need to install files to the PS3's local hard drive can do so without the PS3 needing to have a copy of the iso as well (thus potentially doubling up the space needed on your local PS3 hard drive). It also means you can have as large a library you want on your PC with unlimted amounts of disk storage (upto you how much you can afford or already have spare) which is accessible from any modded PS3 in your house with an ethernet connection on your local network (wireless not recommended). This method for me works brilliantly and all my games work fine using CFW 4.84 (which was the latest version when I did the softmod). I think you also need any PS3 game disk in the PS3 disk drive to get it to see it has a disk in its drive and to boot any game image, but it doesn't matter which game disk it is (even a copied disk will do it if burnt correctly). To solve the updated hard drive storage space issue, you have to delete files in a particular folder (I can't remember which folder right now), which stores this data and when you reboot, it updates the storage space for you, but leaving mmCM on for a few minutes idly can tell you your updated storage space too, I think.

34:13 If I may make a suggestion, if you can acquire one, why not do a video comparing the performance of a hacked hardware-based backward compatible PS3 compares with a hacked partial-emulation backward compatible PS3? The partial-emulation models were all we got in PAL regions. Do PS2 games with compatibility issues play any better as an ISO rip? _Area 51_ is my favourite example of such, the PAL version crashes when I try to play it on my PAL partial-emulation PS3. Supposedly the NTSC version runs but is unplayable due to catastrophic frame stutter and lagging, while the hardware-based models play it fine. I'd be interested to see if the ripped version plays any better.

Im going to sound insane but the PS3 was the perfect machine released ahead of its time. $600 got you a Blu ray and DVD drive (~900 on its own), a PS2 and by extension PS1 (~250, with PS3 capable of higher resolutions and smoother visuals), multimedia applications with their corresponding card readers and enough USB ports to hook up other devices as needed, wireless internet capabilities right out of the box (cough Microsoft) and the ability to run the device as a PC through Linux on the early firmwares. Sony bungled it with lackluster launch games, the extreme newness of Blu Ray, and missing features, plus the idea of paying that much for a “games machine” was rightfully beyond rationale to most customers. Sony did win out but that horrid reveal was the ego shattering kick in the face they needed.

My PS3 in the UK is a 60GB model with PS2 support I got at midnight launch. It has the shiny silver trim (20GB/80GB models had a dull grey trim), liftable panel with compact flash/memory card slots and 4 USB ports. It got discontinued really quickly but it did launch in Europe. The 20GB and 80GB models came out right after. My friend got a 60GB model also for PS2 B/C but my sister got a 80GB later revision. I still have it for parts but it died when Fallout New Vegas came out. It has the 4 USB ports, memory card ports and says PAL on the back sticker.

Hello Adam, I have a PS3 with CFW, I have experienced the same problem with PAL PS1 games, the solution that I found was: 1) Use Iris Manager to launch them (IrisMan). or 2) After you get the message "you cannot play this game at the current video output", if you go to screen settings on the XMB, you'll notice that instead of the usual 480p 720p, etc options, now you have 576p instead of 480p, then if you uncheck all boxes and leave marked only the 576p, if you go and try to launch the PAL PS1 game again, now it will work.
@AdamKoralik

I tried that, didn't work. However, did come up with another step. If you check the PS2 upscaling feature in the game settings menu, you can disable the upscaling. When I did that, it worked. Wish I had known that before the video though.

Well, with that information about earlier ps3 in europe, which I didn't knew, maybe getting this or a slim is almost the same. I just hope someone somehow create a decent solution to get the ps2 to shine on a modern tv. I know it's hard, but maybe in the future we may have something. Dreaming is tax-free. I've thinking about getting a ps3 lately and as soon as I can find a nice deal, I may buy one. The webMAN thing you're mentioning where the games don't show up - you need to scan for content, preferably this is done manually. You just have to select the option "Refresh webMAN Games & XMB" and it's fine. Or do it from the web server, whatever suits your fancy :) (you can connect to your PS3 from a web browser, hence the name *web* MAN hehe) For the "install data" you can do a symbolic link (aka shadow copy in multiMAN) and it saves space that way.

CECHE01 vs CECHA01. What's your opinion on which will run PS2 games cooler? The condition and wear on the console from the previous owner obviously dictates the condition heavily. But given best case scenario which would be the better model? I have heard the argument that , because being made later than the A01, the E01 has better reliability. I personally prioritize which model will last longer rather than compatibility. I only care about PS2 games so maybe the A01 is cooler since it use the EE chip instead of emulation via the CELL, like the E01 does, idk. Your opinion would greatly help in deciding which model to go for in the future. Thank you and I love your vids!

I'm getting a PS3 pretty soon. It's down to either the *CECHBxx* or *CECHAxx* models for full compatibility with PS2. I guess the *CECHBxx* is the 20GB launch model which is all black, lacks Wi-Fi capabilities and the flash memory ports, like SD cards. The USB ports can make up for the flash memory ports such as a PS3 to PS2 memory card adapter. And it also seems there are workarounds or upgrades available to the console for giving it Wi-Fi capabilities. Of course there's always an Ethernet cable. Then the CECHA** is the more familiar 60GB black model with the chrome accent, Wi-Fi capabilities and flash memory support. The common aesthetic giveaway to determine whether the PS3 is fully backwards compatible with the PS2 is the 4 USB ports. I like the look of the all black launch model, so if I find a good deal, I'm gonna shoot for that. *Edit:* I feel I should clarify that even though the *CECHBxx* models aren't listed to support flash memory ports, that doesn't mean their mass storage of the standard HDD can't be "upgraded" to support SSDs (a form of flash memory) as Adam showed in this video, because they can be. So, that shouldn't be viewed as a roadblock. If I'm correct Adam, I'm betting you were showing off a hacked *CECHAxx* model given it's black and chrome color scheme in addition to it's backwards compatibility. *Source:* en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/PlayStation_3_models *This reddit post was helpful too:* www.reddit.com/r/PS3/comments/j0otyq/cechb_vs_cechace_differences/?

great video. i recently hacked my ps3 as well so learning about a few of the homebrew apps was informative. i will say though, another great method for ps2 games would be to mod an actual FAT ps2 with free mcboot (i used a 2TB internal drive which is amazingly cool) and combine that with a retrotink 5X upscaler. that will give you the best ps2 compatibility and image quality (up to 1080p i believe) on a modern LED TV. this setup will possibly be more expensive? but not by much when you consider just how overpriced the (ps2 compatible) ps3's are these days... plus FAT ps2's are very reliable as compared to the launch ps3's. i still need to get myself a retrotink 5x but it is next on the list for sure.
@AdamKoralik
@AdamKoralik 2 жыл бұрын
Unfortunately, that solution isn't even close to being as good as this. While I love the RetroTink, it still has to work with the crappy source data it's been given. While this isn't perfect, it at least starts out waaaaaay better. In short, the PS2 plus a RetroTink is like a room that is messy, and the RetroTink is a vacuum. It'll help a lot, but won't do it all by itself. The PS3 is a room that is already completely clean, it's just more expensive to deal with because you had to hire a maid.
