Thanks Dave. The issue I have found with this lens has to do with having the 100-400 on a tripod. The IS throttles down or shuts off completely if it does not detect any movement in video mode. This is very frustrating because if you are videoing a perched bird for example any small vibration caused by wind shows up in the video. To test this, I suggest setting the lens up on a sturdy tripod, start video recording and then after a few seconds start tapping a tripod leg. You will see the vibration in the video. If you constantly tap the leg, eventually the IS will kick in again. I have used Canon and Sigma telephoto lenses with IS and the IS is always on. It never shuts off or throttles down like the Sony if it doesn't detect vibration/movement. I had this lens for a week and reluctantly returned it because of this issue. It's a great lens for still photography, but not good for video work in certain instances. I thought it might have been the copy of the lens I had, but also saw similar complaints on the BH reviews. I wish Sony would fix this. It would seem correctable in a firmware update.

This issue did happen to me only once when I first started using the lens, I didn't mention it because every time after that it seemed to work fine.

Hello, the lens is great, but stabilization does not work on the tripod. When shooting a video it's frustrating I have to return it :(

Which aperture did you use mostly with the 100-400?

Hey Dave, thanks so much for doing this test! Have you also considered to use the 2.0 TC for the 70-200mm GM? Would be interesting to see how the combination performs compared to the 100-400mm.

I wanted to get that in to compare but B&H didn't have any in stock to test. Perhaps I will try again when they have some.

Dave Dugdale I might try to get my hands on a tele converter as well. I do not expect that it is better than the native 100-400 gm, but maybe the difference is not very big in terms of sharpness.

@@marcelgalle4484 The 100-400 will be much sharper at 400mm

I just ordered the canon 100-400 ii and 3 adapters to mount it on the a7iii. One of them MUST be working with the AF ;) Why canon on Sony? 1.000 euros difference. That’s why!
@mavfan15 жыл бұрын
where are you getting that deal or is that just a currency issue? The 100-400 Canon III has a MSRP of $2,199 USD vs $2,498 for the Sony.

Hello Dave, do you plan to review 1.4x and 2x teleconverter? I haven’t found any solid review yet. It would be interesting if you make a comparison video since you have both 70-200 and 100-400GM.

I want to, last time I checked they were not in stock.

Where can you rent this for $50 for a weekend? I was going to but I think it was like $125 for 3 days. Going from memory.
@DaveDugdaleColorado5 жыл бұрын
There is a place in Boulder called ProPhotoRental, they have the 70-200mm f2.8 for $50/2 days, it looks like the 100-400 is not there yet, but since they are the same price new I would think they are the same rental price once they get some in.

Wow, those lenses are really expensive, and they're not even fixed aperture! And sorry for the question, but why all those lenses have that horrible color? Can't they just make them black?
