What I think sets you apart from the rest of the youtubers is that you would talk about the minor things that may seem insignificant, but play a role in influencing the real-world user experience in your review. For example, the amount of twist needed to apply when zooming from one end to the other is something that others lack. Also, comparing it with the 100-400GM is exactly what I'd like to hear. Great review as always. Keep it up!

Thanks, I always try and dig deep in my reviews! The zoom twist really does sound minor, but it made a big difference to me.

Thats a fine review of what seems to be a great lens. The internal zooming is a really great feature in 'real world' use. I can't warm to the Sony cameras, but the system is undeniably excellent technically. And if the A9 is good enough for the likes of the NYT's Doug Mills and legendary sports shooter Davis Burnett, well I bow to them!

Weeeeeeell, depends a lot on how much you're swinging it around and how much weight training you do! I was fine for half an hour or so, but beyond that wanted a monopod. If you're mostly handholding, I'd say go for the 100-400.

Good overview Gordon. Look a pretty decent lens and not too expensive given it's build quality, internal zooming etc. One thing I noticed though was some distracting specular highlights both in the low light stadium shots (on the seats/stands in the background) and the birds in flight images (in the background on the water)-they had that 'onion ring' effect too. It's also a pity it was not a 200-600mm constant f5.6; that would have trumped Nikon's 200-500mm f5.6. But still looks good for wildlife which is what I mainly photograph/film.

I must admit that the new Sony FE 200-600mm is impressive, my preference remains locked on the new Sigma 60-600mm 4.5-6.3 Sport. Yes, the while the Sigma lens extends/retracts zooming, the 60-600mm is an overwhelming feature to use one camera for wide-angle to super-telephoto captures, plus a fantastic OS and sharp images. The Sigma focus is acceptable and pretty fast after setting up the refining the settings using the Sigma Dock. Both Sony and Sigma x-600mm are designed for daylight events rather than night time as 6.3 raises the ISO bar too high on high shutter speeds for sports action shots. While the pricing of both lenses is equal, the disparity is mainly in the optical ratio where Sigma offers more for the same price, but this could change.

Got to give it to Sony, that short throw zoom and internal zoom are both excellent. I use the Nikkor 200 to 500 f5.6 which is an excellent lens optically but the zoom throw is often a pain. If Sony can bring this lens to the UK for £1750 or less I'm sure it will sell very well 😊

I don't think they will sell it for £1750.00 in UK. If they do I'll probably save up for it. If it's £2000.00 like I suspect I'll wait for Tamron to come up with something native E mount in similar focal range.

Good review Gordon: thanks a lot. If you would purchase a 200 - 600mm for your own use it suggests to me that it must be a good lens. I will not be part exchanging my 100 - 400mm G Master for one, but I will be considering purchasing one to compliment it. I do like the shorter minimum focusing distance of the 100 - 400mm, as I use mine with an SEL20 on my A9 for shots of insects I can't reach with my A7III + Sony 90mm macro. The 200 - 600mm would be of great value to me for longer distance wildlife shots.

I am sure that in the next few months there will be lots of You Tubers doing side by side comparisons and I will be viewing everyone of them. I currently have the 16-35GM and 24-105G which I use mostly for travel photography (strictly a hobbyist) consisting primarily of street and landscape shots. I am going to add the 90Macro for flowers and such and the 100-400 with a tc 1.4 was going to cover the range of the popular 70-200F4 for landscapes plus added range for wildlife. I figured that would set me up for life, at least that’s the story I sold my wife. Cost wise a 100-400 with the tc 1.4 is not that much different than the 200-400 plus the 70-200 F4 but that is a lot of big glass to lug around or sit in my closet for most the at a time.

On the surface it's the reach, internal zoom and cheaper price of the 200-600 vs the slightly better quality, closer focusing, smaller and lighter 100-400. I'd really like to retest the 100-400 with a 1.4x TC.

Thank you both. Gordon, that's what I'm thinking. Hi Gordon. If you had a choice of the G9 with a 200 2.8 or one of these lenses on a Sony body which would you choose? I love my M43 gear for normal days with normal light (not overcast and dreary winter) but low light is sometimes a problem. The two systems would be comparable but which would you choose for wildlife?
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 4 жыл бұрын
Is the wildlife moving towards you at speed? In which case I'd go for the Sony or stick with M43 and use the OMD EM1 II. If the wildlife is fairly static, or the motion os, say, a bird taking flight, then the G9 can work really well. @@cameralabs I am actually finding the G9 to be pretty decent at birds and other moving subjects but the reason for the faster lens/system change for low light is literally the low light aspect of things. Just a few days ago I was trying to get shots of garden birds and water rail at a local reserve and both are very fast and need relatively decent shutter speeds which is hard on an overcast winters day here in the UK. For the speeds required I needed to be at about ISO 3200 or above which is not ideal and my thinking was f2.8 can get me to 1600 or below which is much more acceptable especially when put through Topaz denoise. So that's the scenario really basically it would end up being my wildlife hide lens and general low light wildlife lens.
@cameralabs
@cameralabs 4 жыл бұрын
@@JoeMaranophotography sure thing. If the images look good enough to you at 3200 ISO, then stick with it and get a brighter lens. If the images aren't good enough even at 3200, then you'll need a bigger format as you've suspected.

I am a Canon shooter, even I want one. As a birding hobbyist, the Sony 200-600mm has to be the ultimate lens as I will never drop $13K for a 600mm f/4 or 800mm f/5.6. I can see myself finally leaving Canon to migrate to Sony just because of this. Canon is forcing my hand here, they simply don't have a super zoom and have left out a huge gap in the lens line-up. Meanwhile, I will keep using my 90D and Sigma 150-600mm for now.

Hmmm I thought about what I would get with an A7iii and this lens and sure it would be a great combo for wildlife and then I realised I had to factor in a big heavy tripod and bag to carry both and then actually carry the thing! I am slightly more tempted but I still think the Lumix G9 and another telephoto will be my next tools :)

I'm not a micro 4 thirds hater but I would consider that for wildlife the depth of field from the small sensor and hence the subject isolation you can achieve would be heavily compromised. If you did choose full frame the benefits from the bigger sensor would allow you to shoot hand held a lot of the time instead of using a tripod. Just my 2 cents worth.

@@markrigg6623 Actually, I shoot Wildlife with Olympus OMD EM1 2 as well as Sony a9. The OMD EM1 2 with the 300 F4 provides more detail than the Sony 100 - 400. Also, if your subject is still, the Image Stabilization of the Olympus is superior, as is the quality of the Bokeh. Where the Sony excels is in focus accuracy and tracking providing a significant improvement in the amount of "keepers".

@@andrepegus9014 My 100 - 400 is insanely sharp. I own a lot of lenses including one thats worth 15 k Australian dollars and its better than that. The store i bought it from has an A2 print i made of a water dragon (made with an A7riii) on the wall - its that spectacular. Maybe its the significantly lower resolution of the A 9 giving you quality reduction. Its a fairly ordinary camera resolution wise compared to the A7riii. Or maybe you've got a bad copy. Seriously Im not trying to be a smart arse but my camera gear is extensive (insured for 45k) and its the lense that amazes me the most!. Any way if youre happy with the results youre getting with the other gear thats what matters most. Thanks for the reply. Mark.

@@markrigg6623 Hi Mark. Without rigorous testing, it's difficult to tell which glass (Olympus 300 F4 vs Sony 100-400 G) is best. And certainly, copy variance could always be an issue. Being newer to Sony, it is entirely possible that I have not yet developed the specific techniques necessary for superior results. With that said, when I compare shots, I find the Olympus ones to be sharper. You're intuition that I would get superior results with an A7rIII is spot on. I've done so and those images have more "punch" with the 100-400 than the a9. However, the benefit of a camera like the Sony a9 is it's ability to capture fast moving objects while tracking and maintaining accurate focus, and simplifying the process of a high hit rate and more accurate focal points (ie: eyes). Unfortunately the a7rIII does not do that as well. I like the a9 & a7rIII, and I believe that Sony provides the most versatile PLATFORM of any manufacturer today. It's also true that the smaller sensor of micro four thirds combine quite nicely with well engineered, fast, light and weather sealed glass making mft a compelling alternative for long length shooting. I will need to decide if I buy Sony's 200-600 G or wait for Olympus' 150-400 4.5 Pro instead.

@@andrepegus9014 Yeah Andre I wasnt implying the A9R is a bad camera ,its obvious from what all the owners say that its an absolute weapon at auto focusing And I believe you about the advantages afforded by mft. Photography and gear in particular has become a very complicated and contentious hobby compared to the film era and I appreciate the constructive and intelligent debate . I think next generation of Sonys we wont have to choose between resolution and focusing performance assuming we have the money to keep upgrading! Thanks again for the response. MARK
