Bought 24, 50mm lenses. I use both for street photography. These lenses are sharp, really sharp!. I find f2.5/f2.8 to be enough for night photography. On my a7iii these lenses give clear/usable images up to iso 8000.

I think sony finally go towards the right direction. We need small and high quality lens. The aperture doesn't need to be ridiculously large, however, the sharpness at max. aperture makes more sense to me. No need to stop down.

Hi Dustin, I just ordered a good used copy of this lens partially influenced by your glowing review of it! Looking forward to trying it out on my A7C as an every day walk around lens. Thanks for all of your hard work in putting these gear reviews together- it is much appreciated!

That's a great pairing with the a7C. Enjoy.

The front of the lens seems a bit odd, any difficulty bypassing the hood and using filters directly on the lens?

So for the size and cost of this trio, it poses the question - do you go for the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 or these three taking up almost the same space in your gear bag?
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
Fair question. I think that depends on your priorities. The Sigma is more convenient (no changing lenses). The Sony trio gives you better image quality and focus, though.

Hi. Really nice review, simple one yet I get quite the picture of this lens. Very informative to me. That I even cancelled my order of Samyang 45mm f1.8 for my old A7ii (which I think quite good lens) to replace with this tiny Sony 50mm. Quite large price gap with the Samyang but I think itll be worth it especially after watching this review. 😉

Hello Dustin, here I am asking again; I’d like to buy a lens between 40mm and 50mm and I’m torn among these options: Zeiss Batis 40 mm Zeiss Loxia 50 mm Sony 50 f2.5 My favorite one is the Loxia 50 because I already own the Loxia 21 and love it for its sunstars and, imho, for its colours; I find I have very little to do in postproduction with the images that it produces. The only drawback of the Loxia 50 is that it is manual focus; it’s a bit harder to use but I think it pushes to improve yourself.
@DustinAbbottTWI3 жыл бұрын
I think I'd give the 50mm F2.5 a try if you can find a good price. It's a lot like an autofocusing Loxia and has beautiful rendering.

This review made me decide to purchase this particular lens. It's a baby gm lens. Has the same bokeh quality as the sel90m28g. The g (gold) lens series has a different look with the same sharpness as a gm lens.

Thanks for the great review. I am torn between Samyang 50 1.4 II and this one. What would you recommend for hybrid usage? It would be great to have a side-to-side comparison of those lenses.
@DustinAbbottTWI Жыл бұрын
Unfortunately I don’t have the Sony available any longer to do a comparison. I like both lenses for different purposes. The Samyang more as a portrait lens and the compact Sony as a general purpose lens. That’s a pretty huge difference in maximum aperture, so you need to determine how important that it is to you. Both are competent lenses.
@tbrack_842 жыл бұрын
This or the Loxia 50 for everyday use? You’ve spoken highly of both. Great reviews!
@DustinAbbottTWI2 жыл бұрын
That really depends on your tolerance for manual focus. I'd say the G lens if you need focus speed.

Hi Dustin, can I get opinion on this lens for Astro Landscape work? Particularly for tracked astro panorma's. I know there's faster options but as I'm tracking, 2.5 is not a problem. From your review the quality looks to be there and them the size is a big plus.

Tossing up between the Sony 50 2.5 and Sigma 65 f2 for my new A7C - either focal length will work which do you recommend? or is there something else at a similar price that you recommend. Where I live these two lenses cost the same.

Both lenses are nice optically. The Sony is considerably smaller, so that might be a factor for you.

That MTF chart is wild *but*... if I'm going to get a slow normal prime I'd historically lean towards making it a macro lens with better edge sharpness wide open - something like Nikon's new, similarly-priced 50/2.8 macro for the Z-mount.

That's a fair point, though I've yet to find one that competes with this lens in terms of autofocus performance.
