Our XA10 is a $2000 camera. And higher FPS shooting is definitely a factor. So is 4K. Wanted something we can grow into over time versus something that we'll have to upgrade again soon.

It's an unboxing. There isn't much Linus doesn't know about them. He bought it for himself and his crew to use, and he's the star of the show so naturally he's gonna unbox it. He knows VERY well what type of equipment he is handling, it's a very expensive camera.

I'll be standing in front of the lens as usual. I think I made it pretty clear in the video that I don't know how to use this thing and that I *won't* be the one using it ;)

The cables are for hooking up a monitor to the camera while operating it. It's not meant to output the best quality, it's just to enlarge the screen to make sure your focus is correct. Thanks for the review though and good luck with the new camera!

You'd be CRAZY to capture footage from this thing with composite...... Quality would be horrible. More likely to be used for an auxiliary viewfinder or something. Capture from this camera would be via HD-SDI or HDMI.

ND= Neutral Density, this helps with exposure, keeps things from getting blown out at wide apertures. Wide apertures mean a smaller depth of field, making what is out of focus really out and focus giving pleasing bokeh (fuzzy background). Finally: always remember that it's the lens that makes the image quality pop. /watch?v=wEpssQjhKOA Pro lens and a cheap body give better results than a pro body and cheap lens.

Same here. XA10 was perfect for what they do. They seem to shoot in auto with it too... The production quality will go up with better pre-post techniques and not a new camera.

The RCA Cables connect to an external monitor for viewing footage live while recording. I said the same thing when I got my AX2000.

he already has a good 1080p camcorder, a $1500 Canon XA10. he got this so we can see the difference between 120/60hz, or any lag on a monitor, or the super minor shake in a fan, as well as just to really increase the quality of his videos, for example the focus issues he has had in close-up shots. Another advantage is since it has HDMI out, he can use his capture card for his live youtube shows. In other words, a proper investment for his viewers to allow for more flexibility in his channel.

The new HDR Handycams are pretty awesome, considering how cheap they are now days. I think the HDR700 model rocks. Guy in Holland uses it on his quadcopter and it takes awesome HD video of flying over farmers fields, etc.

we use these on the production team at my church, and they are fun to work with. We use a Canon 24-70 2.8L (original) and it looks great

Lens upgrade will come. For now this will be a big enough step up.

In Europe we have 2-year warranties as default and can't be shortened. It's a directive that many shops end up honouring even if the product had a 12-month warranty. Sales of Goods Act also covers it. In UK we get full repair or partial refund up to 6-years but could end up in small claims court. Surely the US/CA has same protection?

Linus, this camera is waaaay overkill. KZfaq messes up the quality anyways so you don't necessarily need a camera that costs 8.5K. I've shot with this camera before but if you don't work in an overall professional environment, you would probably would get a good enough quality with a 5D. I'm looking forward to future videos but I think you need to step your production value game up a bit in a whole. That means lighting, lighting, sound and again, lighting.

The Sony Nex-FS100 is good and its in the same family as the FS700. The FS100 is extremly light sensitive so with a fast lens you can shoot dang near in the dark. It also produces a very sharp image. There are some key differences between the FS700 & FS100 such as no ND filters, no 4K, no 3G-SDI, and it uses Cinetones rather than Cinegammas, it also does not posses the same level of super slo-mo. The FS100 is $4,199 without the kit lens $4,799 with the kit lens. It fits into your budget.

1080p doesnt always mean it looks good, for example take a 720p video you might find 480p videos that looks better. Also this can capture more frames per second which makes the video look overall better. This camera has way more functions then an iPhone's camera. It has also the function to do slow motion and better stabilizing when making videos. A better focus then the iPhone what else can I say?

SO let me ask. On that camera, you can actually have an HDMI output feed into an external recorder ?

The most important feature of professional digital video cameras in comparison with professional digital cameras nowadays, is the intergraded optical ND filters. Digital cameras can only take external ND filters in front of the lens which isn't so practical. There are some electronic ND filters but reduce the quality.

a great camera - always in 2017 - i use this for a long time as a prime camera , current i use a Sony Fs7 as maincamera and the FS700/FS100 as a "B-camera".

Old cam is about 2k~ idk why people are saying buy a 2nd 2,000$ cam This cam also shoots in 4k(or will) which is great when 4k displays are the norm

Word of advice - 8k camera with 0.5k lens is a no no. Look into upgrade for the lens - can also sell kit one for funds. Your camera can only capture the image that is provided by lens. This kit one is quite standard in terms of low light performance. Also for unboxings (provided the video operator can walk) prime lens would be recommended. Will be interesting to see the image quality on this bad boy non the less.

Linus, ND filters make things darker by a Stop, 1/2 of a Stop, 1/3, 1/4, and so on. Just used for when you have an overexposed subject and you can no longer compensate for it.

@LinusTechTips With this camera you really need to use the light filters for the nice film effect trough the Adobe Premiere or any soft.

Huge DSLR with auto focus. While I know your reasoning for the purchase would of went with a Canon 5D Mark 3. Check out what DigitalRev is doing with this simple setup. Still a very nice camcorder!

In general, still cameras are better at capturing still images and video cameras at moving objects. If you plan on shooting interviews or general "unboxing" videos where there isn't much movement, then perhaps a DSLR would be better.

I hate to, but I agree with you. He does like to film nothing and ignores the focusing. When the camera is focused on the subject he just keeps changing the distance and camera looses the focus and most of the footage is blurry. I definitely could do a better job, but lets see how he does with the new camera (which looks to be awesome!)

ok thanks. I'm already using the custom Magic Lantern firmware and the technicolor cinestyle with the low saturation, low contrast, no sharpen filter and then edit in Post in AE CS6 with Magic Bullet Looks and Colorista II. It's time consuming but it gives the best results, however I'm still not 100% happy, I think it looks blurry, especially at more than 10 feet, for example to film a scenery. I have the Sigma 17-50mm f2.8 lens.

The drawback in Sony recent cameras is the E-Mount lenses system.

Charging for firmware is the same as RAID card manufacturers charging for small unlock keys to add features. While I do not like it either, it does take time to develop those extra features and if is cheaper to just make one camera/card that supports everything and sell firmware/keys than create multiple different models. I guess it makes sense.

Some credit cards also give you an extra year on top of a normal one year warranty and restrictions are applied, normally whitegoods but you'd have to ring them to find out exactly.

12:00 being able to take photos might not seem relevant with something like this but actually it is a very great feature cause lets say your at an event and filming some gaming stuff and you see a awesome custom case and you want to take some photos off it if you dident have the abilaty to do so with this you would need to carry around a cammera to wich would mean that you had to carry two heavy things with lences and shit not very ideal when events can be for a whole day

The "WHAT CAMERA?" question generally should be the second question to "WHY AM I FILMING?". In other words, the story matters first. This will help to dictate which tool you will invest in. For instance if you need to move quick and stay light weight and assuming you don't need slow-motion then the C100 would be a better choice, however that camera is a bit above $5000.

The lens are more than fine for now, he can upgrade in time, it's not like the lens cost 20$, he already said that he wanted a good camera that can receive updates like better lenses, firmware and what not !

Thanks a lot, I was looking at lenses for shooting videos, I figured it might be the problem because pictures were great, the only problem was videos, but I didn't find anything in particular yet, I didn't know what to look for exactly. I'll check those, looks like they are cheap and give an impressive result. Maybe I'll find a good EOS prime lens too.. might be a bit more expensive but... we'll see. At least I feel better knowing I could improve the quality with a lens more suited for the task.

exactly. My max res is 1366 by 768. So I dont think I will notice much of a difference unless they play around with some of the cooler features like slow motion and stuff.

the long pipe for the eye wear kinder looks very 1990s. bu the camera itself looks fantastic. but not sure about the long pipe tube that looks so long and thick.

Considering a good lens alone can be over $2000, it's perfectly fine. It's not a general consumer camera.

I have no need for a better camera or would be able to ever justify buying this but just watching him unbox it makes me want it so bad :(

I'm amazed too that You guys can justify spending $10k or maybe slightly more on all those things just for YT vids. Regardless of YT worsening quality (or not) cause we can see clearly without all this. Zoom on current camcorder can be slow but Linus speaks fast so I never felt like wasting time watching techtips.

Do you have the GH2 ? I bought the 60D about 4 months ago and I now love DSLR. But I mainly wanted to shoot videos with it. Overall I am happy with my purchase but the videos are more blurry than I expected, not sure if I'm asking too much or if something is wrong. I know the GH2 is great for videos and it doesn't have the moiré problems, do you think I should sell my 60D and get the GH2 ? Or do you have any other suggestions ? Thanks
