After testing both of these cams, I ended up going with the Pocket 6K Pro as the B cam to my Alexa Mini. Which one do you like better?
@leebrandt85973 жыл бұрын
Did he just say that he could push the Pocket 6k's footage even further than the Alexa in some cases? And that film industry politics plays a hand against productions choosing the Pocket 6k over other "acceptable" cameras? That's pretty important info that I wish more people would hear, especially a lot of youtube people who have a bias against Blackmagic Pocket cameras
@ENSOTAVES3 жыл бұрын
I am so bias! and my two systems are Blackmagic and Sony for the past 3 years, image quality vs convenience that is the dilema sony vs BM. I will choose BM as much as possible, unless my A7sii is a better low light choice or Autofocus is a must.

I think that actually the A7III is more of direct competitor - also in terms of price. What would be any benefit of the FX3 over a A7III? I am still at the beginning of film making and looking into an upgrade for my Sony a6300. What would be your recommendation if autofocus is a must have?

I don't think it's fair to say that the FX3 autofocus is un-usable because of sound when using Sigma glass and and adapter... Of course adapters sucks. I have the FX3 with both Sony GM glass and Sigma ART E-mount and it's works perfectly and 100% silent.. I also have a good NTG shotgun mic mounted on the provided handle and really no problem whatsoever ... I'm not saying the FX3 is perfect, far from it.. but your video sounded a bit too much as a sale pitch for the BM.. But then again, I'm speaking from a run and gun documentary shooter, not shooting commercials in controlled environments and everyone has his own priorities when it comes to choose a camera. Only 1 year ago, if you would have told me I would buy Sony, I wouldn't have believed you.. but hey.. things changes.. color science have improved so much, even their menu (I actually love the button lock system.. :) ) I love consistency across all formats (10bit / no crop (or very small one) across all the line.. and finally, as you said yourself.. that body / form factor.. is just gorgeous.
@coreyrobn3 жыл бұрын
Totally! That’s good to know about the G glass and NTG combo. Again I had a feeling it was just the sigmas and my Schoeps mic paired together. I wasn’t trying to tear apart the FX3- I just enjoyed the all-in-one experience of the BMPCC overall a bit better. They’re both incredible cameras!

For this project the P6K was so good and fast to work with. When i started grading the images from both camera in davinci, it got to a point the P6k looked so good, i was now trying to match the Arri to the P6k. DSLR lenses tend to have noise because the focus mechanism is physically coupled to the ring. So it takes more power to drive the autofocus especially for fast moving subjects, and since those are stills lenses, speed/power was prioritized over noise. Mirrorless lenses have the AF mechanism completely isolated from the focus ring hence faster, silent AF, but the drawback is all mirrorless lenses are focus by wire.

I’m glad KZfaq recommended this to me. An honest and self aware review from a knowledgeable perspective of an industry professional. Don’t get a lot of those in the public sphere, and always glad when I stumble on one Most of all, I appreciate the honest criticisms, particularly for the FX3 as the Sony ecosystem is what I’m currently tied to and upgrading my 5 year old A6300 to a Sony FF that’s good for both photo and video is most financially sound for me. Which is why I haven’t decided to jump over to more affordable cinema oriented camera like the BMPCCs. I know I should probably differentiate the photo and video gear at some point but I’m just a couple of years into doing semi-pro to pro work and camera’s not my main role when doing pro gigs. Although I’d like to be self reliant hence why I’m investing in gears that can be relatively flexible. And the fact that my gig types varies from events, commercials, to short film and recently features Current plan is to get the A7SIII for the relatively codec upgrade from my a6300 and pair it with an external recorder for RAW/RAW-like codec later. But my current priority is getting my own lighting kits, fixtures and modifier Sorry for the rant, but yeah, keen to hear more honest reviews from an industry practitioner ✌️

@darielrodriguez69842 жыл бұрын
Man, Sony isn't the holy grial of cameras, and don't always come with an affordable price. Look for the camera that fits your needs and allows you to squeeze until the last drop of the capabilites and features brought across. Some times isn't really worth it to get an expensive camera if you can't use it at full capabilities. Think about what are you doing now, which kind of content and for which platform you're producing, you don't need and Arri for Instagram videos, if you know what i mean. One last quid for free, mind the editing time that take for your editing platform to load, color grade, render and export the footage, is it worth to shot raw footage? Get a Sony or a Lumix if you still want to get some pitures out of it.

My two cents as an award winning cinematographer who has shot films, tv series, short films, commercials and documentaries with Arri, Sony, Blackmagic, Red etc, I’m going to have to say that FX3 is actually way better than the 6K pro. Just arrived from Qatar, where I shot a low budget, run and gun documentary about the World Cup using an FX3, the A7S3 and the 6K pro. Leaving the infamous 7S3 out of the question, the most reliable camera was the FX3 by a lot. Yes, the BM shot gorgeous images. On location It made me excited about the image I was getting, even though the batteries run out ridiculously fast, and if you don’t have a sophisticated rig it is a pain to handle and operate. Oh and the micro jitters. It’s so shaky it’s insane. And if you want decent shallow depth of field you need pretty fast lenses. Also, images look pretty bad during night shoots. To my surprise, making the 6K pro takes work in post was a pain (had to stabilize and remove noise) and that’s something nobody tells you. The FX3 doesn’t give you the exciting (daylight) image quality as the 6K pro, but it’s full frame sensor gives you awesome shallow dof which makes it look cinematic from the moment you press REC. it has pretty good autofocus (even when using a Sony 24-70mm f4), great dynamic range, it can shoot during nighttime with ease, batteries last a lot, decent audio quality (nothing spectacular) and best of all, a decent image stabilization. Also, it’s compact and doesn’t look like a pro camera that everyone will be weirded about (like it happened with the 6K Pro) If you want to make the 6K pro work the way you intend, you will need a ton of other stuff to make that happen, and if you end up doing that you might as well rent or use an Alexa Mini. The 6K pro is not a run and gun camera at all. The FX3 is. You make the mistake of using the 6K pro as a run and gun camera and you will be ruined and end up with shaky, out of focus shots. No the Gyro thing doesn’t solve the shaky issue, it looks horrible if you don’t shoot to use gyro stabilizer, which beats the purpose of using it on available light situations. Also, after some tests, the LUTs i prefer respond better on the Sony than on the BM but that’s just my preference. My conclusion: the BM offers the very best image quality, contrast and colors of any camera around $4000 below. No question about it. But it’s a pain to make the image actually usable. The FX3 gives you 70 percent of the image pop of the 6K pro, but it’s a beauty to handle. And the menus are pretty great if you get involved into customizing. No one should complain about Sony menus not being great right after unboxing but claim the 6K is great from the beginning as well because that’s not true. You will need a decent gimbal, or a tripod, lights (in some circumstances) and pretty good lenses. Good luck putting your tripod on a crowded place. Honestly, people who are interested in these videos are because they want to get a run and gun camera. Otherwise they would be looking at Alexa or Komodo. I love the image of the 6K pro like I love looking at a Lamborghini that has worn, thin tires. Just remember, that car is gonna crash and burn at the worst moment. For low budget, every -moment-counts camera, Fx3 all the way. Awesome video. Congratulations 🙏🏻

@@coreyrobn thank you for your kind reply. You’re obviously a hard working and talented film maker so it’s only natural that you organically figured it out. No shame on having a camera on a shelf, (it’s two of us now with the 6K pro lol). Casually, I’ve also shot three short films with the FX3 and really the only thing that I feel lacking is it’s very digital looking color science. Even the Panasonic now has (to me) more flattering skin tones 😔, but i learned that exporting a lut to the FX3, forgetting the 1.7 over exposing bs and just expose the image by eye (or even underexposing a bit) and then rising the blacks a bit in post and adding a tiny amount of film grain, you end up with a very special image that will make anyone proud. My first cinema camera is the 6k pro, like you i was also considering the Fx3. Future plan is to go for a high end camera , and the 6k pro is gonna be the B camera. I must say the moment i switched it on, i could use the whole menu without reading any manual, everything was there and easily accessible. This is really important. The whole blackmagic package is really impressive too, since u get the da vinci studio for free, a pro level editing software, which handles the 6k raw footage easily exactly like you mentioned. Of course if you rig the camera it becomes a cinema beast, but the fact you can have it only with its battery grip and a lens, makes it a great camera for filming even on holidays. Thanks for the nice wrap up. I wonder if RED cameras are the next big thing, or someone has to really go for ARRI for that high end result.

Great Review ! Congratulation for your child! :) Being a Pocket 6k owner who bought it just 2 months back I am still tempted to get the 6k Pro for the IRND Filters, Tilting 1500 nits screen and better battery life. Only thing beholding me right now is that image quality of both the cameras is same. Unless I want to keep both where one acts as a B cam.
@coreyrobn3 жыл бұрын
Thanks brother! Man the ND’s are suuuuper handy. If your other one is already rigged out there’s prolly no reason to get the pro. I just wanted to go handheld a lot without building a rig and the pro works perfect for that!
@KETANORANA3 жыл бұрын
@@coreyrobn True! I rigged out my other one that's the main reason I am unable to invest on the pro version as the visual quality we get out of both is the same that too with same gen5 color science. Instead I am thinking of investing in a good cinema lens and/or Blackmagic Design's Color Grading Micro Panel. But this pandemic has really effected the work so much that investing more on gear seems to be a bad idea. But thanks for your quick response brother! :) May everyone in your family stay safe and healthy. Keep creating good content! Cheers!

Loved the vibe of the videos. Currently planning on creating a documentary in 2 years. I've been been lurking around the BMPCC 6K pro for that reason, as well as around the FX3 but... I already have a A7iii and the colors... I'm always frustrated. Never seem to get them right where I want them. Feels like it's the same here with the FX3. On an another note: could you do a tutorial or something about how you record and process your audio? It sounds fantastic!
@coreyrobn2 жыл бұрын
Ah thanks brother! Hope that doc turns out amazing. And yeah I could totally do a video on the audio setup. For this one it was really simple tho. I was laying on a bed, talking into a Schoeps miniCMIT recording on a Zoom H5. I think I threw a multiband compressor on it in post. No EQ. That mic is silly good. The closer the mic to the source, the better it’ll sound. Usually aim to have the peaks hit around -12dB on the meters.
@ETT5203 жыл бұрын
like the way how you narrate the whole review. Really helped with my concerns. I wonder tho if you would choose Sony a7siii or BMPCC 6k pro if you're making short films with only one camera!

For sure the BMPCC. The colors and files are way more flexible imo.

Great review! I also sold my fx3 for the 6k pro. I also have the same 24-70 sigma lens. Question : do you have any issues with the OS not working sometimes on that lens? I have to flick the switch off and on to get working. I’m hoping just the lens and not a compatibility issue . Cheers

What mic are you using to do voice over?
@bybenoit55933 жыл бұрын
Got here through Spencer Sakurai. Nice video! I just rented the 6K Pro for a project and I was very happy with the results. I figured I’d have to spend a lot more to get the quality I got, and the work flow was so much nicer than fighting with the C-Log from my canon mirrorless. I might not buy one any time soon, but I’ll definitely rent one for projects going forward. As a total newcomer to the black magic, there was ZERO fussing. Everything is clearly written and laid out on the cam and in the menus, and again, that image! As a sound guy though, what kind of mic would you recommend plugging straight into it for interviews? I’ve been using the hotshoe rode mics for years boomed over the speaker but if I’m renting the BMPCC I’d like to go better with the mics if possible. Thanks again!
@coreyrobn3 жыл бұрын
Totally agreed! a treat using the 6K Pro. As far as mics go, that's a very loaded question. Though its kind of the same answer as cameras: there's no one-mic-does-all solution unfortunately. For interviews, I use the Schoeps miniCMIT if the room/ space sounds good naturally. It's a very transparent mic and picks up reverberation in a beautiful way. You probably know this but the closer the mic to the source, the better its going to sound. And the "source" is actually the top of the chest/ bottom of the neck. That's where the really good resonance on people is. Not the mouth.
@bybenoit55933 жыл бұрын
@@coreyrobn Thanks for getting back to me. Google that mic and though I'm sure it's excellent, it's WELL above my budget. So perhaps it'll stay an aspiration :)

great video, have you come from a sony background? or was the fx3 your first sony.
@coreyrobn3 жыл бұрын
Fx3 is my second Sony. I have an Rx0ii as a crash /underwater cam. Always had a tech crush from afar on Sony just hated the menus. I went to a BestBuy a few years ago and picked one up and immediately put it down after trying to go through the menus. I was on Fuji at the time (which is dead simple and very similar to film). My background for video / photo systems is: Canon > Nikon > Fuji X > Sony > ZCam > Arri > Sony > BMPCC Fuji (photo) and ARRI/ BMPCC (video) are the only cams I’ve kept so far.

I enjoyed this vid. It did sound a tad bias when the focus noise was mentioned. Didn't have native lenses for a cam you were shooting down a bit. The noise is from the MC-11 and there is no auto focus noise on the native lenses. The green tint came from the sigma glass, that was the reason I sold all my Sigmas and went straight native. Also Sony has the most accurate colors so there will be a bit of green in comparison to other cams. Even though it is the most accurate, it is not the most pleasing looking image. That is where having the Picture Profiles really make the Sony come alive. I don't own the FX3, but I do have the A7SIII and the A7III and pretty much know my way around them for the most part. This vid was definitely informative to hear from an experienced Cinematographer and what your feelings and first impressions were on these two cams. Subb'd!

@coreyrobn3 жыл бұрын
Ah heckyeah - glad it helped. The 24-70 seems like it was made for that cam. It pretty much lives on mine. Wish it was just *ever* so slightly wider on the wide end tho. Other than that it’s such a killer combo. That OS is super helpful on the long end. Great colors too. I use that setup as the B cam to my Arri/ Cooke A Cam setup and it matches surprisingly well!

Nice review, lots of good thoughts. Im currently really torn apart which way should i go. I own a pocket 4k and a7siii and honestly, they both work for me in their own ways. I use a7siii a lot on smaller social media projects that need quick setup and delivery. But I am tired of external ND filters on the Pocket 4k so im currently between 6k pro or fx6. I really really really like the BM footage, colors, files and menu system. But on the same time it would make things easier to stay in one ecosystem for 2 camera interviews etc (fx6 and a7siii would match perfectly fine in post). I'm not a fan of Pocket form factor, for me it needs a rear v-mount plate so i can support it against my chest while handheld shooting, which makes the rig quite big and heavy. Fx6 pretty much has usable form factor right out of the box.
@thegagankhaira2 жыл бұрын
which one did you end up buying?
@Siimkristjanpariis2 жыл бұрын
@@thegagankhaira neither yet. I'll just keep renting them depending on project until i decide. I did rent fx6 recently for interview project and i had mixed feelings. Love the form factor, love that footage matches perfectly with a7siii, really love the variable nd. I like that its usable right out of the box(my bmpcc needs lot of rigging) But pretty much hated everything else. Menus and settings are quite cumbersome to use compared to bmpcc4k and a7siii. There is no long gop 10bit 4k option like a7siii does. Bmpcc has lots of compression options. Its good to have them for long interviews. No stereo 3.5mm input (i use rode wireless go 2 for quick projects and it would be nice to have separate L and R. Xlr ports are mono)
