One thing to note on focus racking speed, you can change that in the G9mii, so if you want it to rack focus faster, you could, or if you want a slower pull you could slow it down.

@@maxkitaev3524 No doubt, fx30 is a great camera. If it allowed for 6K / open gate at 30fps, I am sure I would have bought two of them by now. There was a rumor going around that they would allow open gate through a firmware update, but haven't seen that yet. The other thing is that production companies / agencies want camera operators to shoot on Sony. Don't know why exactly, but most of the jobs offered ask for Sony shooters (even an FS7 will do in many cases), although apparently most agencies want FX6 operators. Not much of a demand by agencies for Panasonic unfortunately :(

What a fascinating comparison!!! Well done and huge thumbs up 👍👍👍👍👍 I would never have pitted these 2 cameras against each other plus the end result was a total surprise!!! You did such a terrific comparison and have me looking at the G92 in a whole new light - wow. The G92 is definitely a sleeper camera, and personally I would go for the IBIS as the lead feature - which is why I have the E1 even with its serious overheating "feature" lol. Sony missed out not putting their Dynamic Active feature in the FX30 and that gives my win to the Panasonic G9 II.

I reckon the next round of Sony cameras will be outstanding. But for now the G9II looks the best to me. And by the time Sony releases the next round, if the past is anything to go by, then (1) the price of the G9II will have dropped a truckload and (2) Panasonic will have rolled out more firmware upgrades, enabling the G9II to retain the title of the ‘best VFM’ in the market like the G9 OG was for many years.

That focus flickering on the FX30 in the backlit scenario is something I haven't noticed with my FX30. I'll have to do some tests to see if that happens with my FX30. If it does, than the G9ii might be something I look at sooner rather than later. Today is Friday, so I will try to run some tests over the weekend. Regarding skin tone/color science, I have to agree. Panasonic captures better skin tones than Sony has for the most part. Although, when shooting in Cine4 on my FX30, the skin tones are quite good. Why Sony can't bring that over to the SLog3 profile I couldn't say. I'll have to try PP1 with my FX30 as you demonstrated does provide good colors straight out of the camera. Stabilization wise, the G9ii is a beast. To be honest, I have been looking at the S5iix as my next upgrade. Not just because of its full frame sensor. But, also because of its ability to record to an SSD, and its own stabilization power. But, also because I can pair it with the Blackmagic 12G monitor to record BRAW. Having owned the BMPCC4K, I really miss working with BRAW because of its film look straight out of the camera. Great comparison overall. If I didn't already own the FX30, I would probably pick up the G9ii. In large part because Panasonic really nails the skin tones. Which with Sony can bring extra work in post at times. Thanks again. Your channel is one of the few that informs my decision making process when it comes to cameras.

I notice it a lot with wide angle lenses it’s always been an issue for me on various tests. Either the AF goes funny or the exposure is all over the place (or both). It’s fine otherwise though the autofocus is excellent in all other scenarios but it’s just my experience with shooting a lot outside.

Thanks for the video, Shane. Panasonic colors looked (subjectively) better in all shots EXCEPT the low light shot. Are you sure you din't have the cameras names swapped? ;) One other benefit for the FX30, at least for those in to hardcore video, would be the timecode in (through the multifunction port). However, that means you can't run it off USB-C power banks :( On the other hand, I am assuming that the G9 II has the better screen (maybe you can comment about that) and that you get a viewfinder for reviewing footage on really bright days. Anyway, thanks to you and Rhiannon for the video.

Great review - thanks. Small suggestion - for focussing tests, perhaps consider using "equivalent" apertures, to equalise the DoF. The relative crop factor in this case is about 1.33, so for example, F1.7 on MFT would be equivalent to about F2.4 on APS-C. But, of course you are correct that matching the absolute apertures matches ISO, which is also a worthwhile test.

It records 4 channels of audio in MOV mode so you need to either remove one of the two stereo tracks or select a single mono track (whichever you like). Turn the preamp of the camera down to about -15 or so and you're laughing. The noise is no doubt related to the additional unused channels. I record a lot of KZfaq videos in MP4 which uses only two channels of audio. It's a handy way of saving some time. :)

hi, I noticed that when you move away a little the g9 ii loses the ability to focus correctly. It can be seen in this video of yours, as well as in your other videos such as the one when you try the various lenses. This is frustrating, it happens to me too. Up close, however, there are no problems. But when you move away you can no longer understand when the image is precisely in focus. Another thing I noticed in g9 is the total lack of reliability of the white balance when it is in automatic mode it changes constantly it is terrible. I hope a firmware arrives soon to fix this. No mention of Sony's biggest handicap? LED light flicker handling, it's incredible how frustrating this can be with 60Hz power and awful LED or fluorescent lighting (I know you're in 50Hz so maybe lights do better?). Sony becomes very difficult to use in many scenarios for this reason especially for live music and shooting like that where you don't control the scene. Pretty sure the G9 II has a shutter angle setting right? Interestingly even the OM System/Olympus has the option to get into slight shutter shifting for getting rid of light flicker. Curious what your experience is with these scenarios. Of course in your studio you've got gear that works correctly and you don't have to struggle with but literally my first attempt with Sony to record a friend of mine, his LED light ruined it immediately. Had to switch to 30fps from 24fps just to try to get some semblance of watchable video and there was still some flicker and waving, just not as bad. Cheers!

The IBIS is crazy on the G9II, but I have worked with way worse than the FX30. Also, I am an amateur filmmaker and do not need the extra resolution, codec/quality options or photo features. So FX30 makes sense.

A big surprise. G92 has no 4k 422 h265. In my gh6 4k 422 is much better than 420.

Sorry i correct. G92 has 4k 422 in h264 just like gh6 and sony. So no difference. All 420 are h265.

Sony looks sharper and crisper all the time. When you are moving back and forth lumix looks soft.

I think the Sony foorage is oversharpened. The G9ll produces more natural video. I also like the better coulour of the Lumix

Much to my surprise I tended (not always) prefer the Sony. Definitely its colors, recognizing that’s somewhat subjective. As far as IBIS, Sony overall is rarely good, but often OK with EIS on. think the Sony would be the better video tool if stationary. My common complaint on the G9ii is that it still too big for a mft, but I said the same about the g9 too. Nicely done, both are good!

interesting and informative... somehow. my problem: beside focus, this comparison only works for cameras with one button (record button) and no settings whatsoever (hardware or software). record or not, and that's it! please give the information, from the start, of picture profile - graded or not - bitrate - color space. unfortunately (or fortunately) these days, there is more than a record button. there is a super-computer inside these cameras who interprets the sensor pixel data according to dozens of settings we choose. so, we understand and need this information, in order to judge what you present to us... video-makers, video-creators, camera assistants, cameramen, directors of photography, video passionate hairdressers, etc. you can forget the lenses info! don't need it. modern lenses have the same super-sharp and boring look (read - No character)! don't forget: focus aside, no mater the images you show us, pair them with the settings you used. except you pull out the camera of the box - put battery in - press record button! but even so: you need to inform us about that! i hope this make sense to you.

I’ve done the deep technical reviews on both cameras. You can see those. This is a quick real world comparison using the same comparable settings. Rock on 🤘

The Panasonic does not have a "micro four thirds " sensor any more than the Sony has a "E" sensor, that is its lens fitting. It has a "four thirds" sensor, and that sensor size is not restricted to MFT cmaeras..
