Don't put full frame lenses on your aps-c camera? Why not? There are many benefits to putting full frame glass on the smaller sensor but there are some cons of doing this also.
Be very selective with what you do as you may save quite a lot of money by buying aps-c glass.

The Tamron 17-70mm F2.8 APSC E-mount lens is a really good all rounder for the FX30 if you haven't previously invested in full frame or don't want to. Pair it with the 11mm 1.8 and it can compete with the FX3 in 90% of use cases. For those two lenses plus the FX30 it will cost less than the FX3 body only and at that point it's really just low light performance that sets them apart.

Great info! Just a quick question, if you use a full frame lens on a APS-C sensor, don’t you loose some aperture of the lens?
@TannerGwaltney
@TannerGwaltney Жыл бұрын
Not in the way you're thinking. A 35mm f/2 lens designed for full frame would look exactly the same as a 35mm f/2 designed for APS-C, when used on the same camera. The focal length (35mm) and aperture (f/2) are physical, optical qualities that are consistent no matter what sensor size the lens was designed for. The only difference is how big of an image circle is projected out the back of the lens. The objects in the projected image, however, are the same size for two lenses of the same focal length, and the depth of field is therefore the same too. The difference comes in the fact that to get the same shot on APS-C, you have to shoot wider or farther away from your subject, so to get the same shot your depth of field would be deeper. The amount of light is the same because the lens is projecting the same image with the same optical qualities no matter the sensor size, but your depth of field ends up being one f-stop deeper because you had to widen out or move back. So f/2 on an APS-C will look like f/2.8 on a full-frame after accounting for framing. Hopefully that makes sense. It's a fairly simple concept, but does take a while to wrap your head around it.

Hey Jason, Thank you for the good and informative video! Could you also make a video about Full Frame and Super35 in the future? Nowadays the industry tells you that full frame is the better sensor and that super35 only has a "crop". The crop is perceived as bad, which I can't agree with... Almost no cinema films are shot with Full Frame and Full Frame comes from photography. If you look at the big cinema cameras, like Arri and RED, they also work with a Super35 sensor. Full Frame is a special look, which in most cases has in my opinion a much too large depth of field, but then everyone is saying it’s "cinematic". Of course, full frame cameras have advantages, such as low light performance, but as a filmmaker, do you want the full frame look in every video? I am using the Sony A7 iv at the moment, but almost always use Super35 mode for videos and Full Frame for stills. Thanks for reading and best regards, Manos Aronis

while i agree with super35 being a brilliant format RED and Arri are designing more Large Format sensors (Full Frame). Considering I've been shooting with cinema cameras for a long enough time that have Super 35 sensors I'd say there is no issue using a Full Frame lens on it. In fact my PL glass now is either made for Super 35 or VistaVision coverage. The Zooms I have are S35 and the Primes are VV. Either way, I still think in cinema terms with S35 because that's the standard. You wouldn't go to the biggest filmmakers and say to them "oh you shot this in S35? But that's not Full Frame." Someone like Spielberg who famously loves the 21mm on 3-Perf 35mm Motion Picture Film would only think of that 21 in terms of S35. They wouldn't be saying because it's a crop it is equivalent to this in Full Frame. Why? Because the standard of cinema has never been Full Frame 135 still photography size. That was more like VistaVision, which was more rare and primarily used for VFX over the last 50+ years. 70-years ago they did experiment with VistaVision for full features, but it was not cost effective. Even going to IMAX 1570 film, you end up with essentially VistaVision 70mm Film in the form of 15-perf 70mm film. And, it's only used for select sequences. The closest we come to that in photography is Medium Format. So, to sum up it's time to stop this Full Frame argument BS with regards to video.

There isn't anything wrong with using FF lenses. As long as you are aware of what you're getting. You have to multiply the focal length AND THE APERTURE to understand what image you're going to get crapped. Lens makers love that most of the time people only convert focal length. The DoF will not be the same on APS-C without conversion. The other thing is the whole notion that a FF lens uses the sharpest part of the lens on APS-C has been debunked. Super sharp lenses can look about as good cropped, but almost always you will have a worse image than a native lens of similar quality. That's not saying it's always bad, as many times there isn't an APS-C version (or they are trash quality). That being said. I'm popping the 16-35 f/4 PZ on my Fx30. Works for what I do on KZfaq and I love having the aperture ring.

It is lens to lens basis on every single lens you use. Some lenses perform different due to manufacturing copies. I have done almost 50 lens review videos to see the difference
@hbp_
@hbp_ Жыл бұрын
It really depends. If you have a high quality lens and you crop in you are going to magnify its manufacturing defects and flaws. You can observe this effect with tele converters (or doublers in ENG). On the other hand, poor quality lenses might have really bad edges that might look worse than cropping in. IMHO this was mostly an issue on cheap lenses up to maybe 2010s. Nowadays even the cheapest lenses from well known brands are pretty decent compared to what they used to sell us.

3 minutes in where you say there's a difference between using FF glass or APS-C glass. There isn't a difference. A 50mm FF lens will look exactly the same as a 50mm APS-C lens on an APS-C sensor. Only difference is the size of the physical lens as you mentioned earlier. This is why I never do 'equivalent' focal lengths. A 50mm lens is always a 50mm lens. If I shoot on an s35 camera, I know my FOV for any given lens. Nobody is shooting on an Alexa 35 and calling a 50mm lens an 85mm 'equivalent'. This should have stopped a long, long time ago. If you're referring to an APS-C lens by what focal length is written on the side, but then saying you need to multiply a FF lens by 1.5x then your logic is flawed. They're both the exact same! Simple question - When you stick that 18-135 (APS-C) lens on your FX30, are you multiplying it by 1.5x? Have they put the wrong numbers on the side? No? Then why would you do it with a FF lens?

A difference by saying it uses a slightly different part of the glass as I mentioned. The fact that Large Format (full frame) is becoming a norm people understand what a 50mm is like on LF sensors and don’t understand it’s like using a 75mm on their full frame camera. This should have been explained enough for everyone to understand. I am a filmmaker and I understand how crop factors work my friend
