Hey everyone! Today I am sharing my review of the new Sony G 24-50mm f2.8 lens. After lots of GM lens releases, it's exciting we are getting some G lenses from Sony now! I am taking photos on the Sony A7IV and testing it for video on the A7sIII. We are taking a look at the autofocus performance of this lens, image quality, bokeh, video and more. Since there is a lot of competition within the midrange lens genre, I have also included a bunch of comparisons to similar lenses throughout the video. Thank you to Sony Australia for loaning me this lens, all thoughts and opinons are my own. Here are some of my reviews for the lenses I mentioned:
Sony 24-70mm f2.8 GMII: • Sony GM 24-70mm f2.8 m...
Tamron 28-75mm G2: • Tamron 28-75mm f2.8 G2...

Sigma 45mm, 35mm and 24mm: • Sigma 45mm f2.8, 35mm ...
Sony 20-70mm f4: • Sony G 20-70mm f4 Hand...
That's going to keep you busy! haha

Wow, this video is so well done. Thank you Julia and your team for all the hard work you put in to show us these new lenses. Yasmin is so stunning, I love her styling and her presence in front of the camera. Your portrait examples sold me on this lens. I love the bokeh. I think I'll be getting it to substitute my GM35 when I occasionally need zooming.

Thanks for the review For video, I like the smaller/lighter size of the lens and probably wouldn't be too concerned about losing a few millimeters on the wide end. Loved all the pictures with your model. No bad ones there.

I'm impressed, & do like the softer look of this G lens compared to the GM sharpness, only negative is the bokeh full body shots. I'd love to see you try the Sigma 18-50mm F2.8 DC DN apsc lens on both apsc & full frame as this is the zoom im looking to add for both fashion/portrait work in stills & video too

16-50 would have been stellar.. But no... Sonys weird focal length game, like the 16-25...25 has no reach. I just bought the a7cii and starting to regret it because I can't find an all in one lens like the apsc variant, 16-50mm.

Well, in some ways this is really an attractive new lens. Speaking as somehow who tends to like 35 and 50mm the most, this covers my mainly used focal lengths. For a user of a 7R body, additionally, having 24mm is very nice because you can use APS-C crop mode for 4K recording to get full pixel readout, effectively ending at a focal length of 36mm. What I really like about it is the minimum focus distance for 50mm. Most of the lenses I know are 40/45 cm + x, so having 50mm + f2.8 and a mfd of 30cm is quite a nice compromise for people who like to be able to expose subjects in close up shots a bit more without feeling any necessity for f1.4 or something alike. However, yet again, I have to say that I don't really consider its price to be reasonable. Especially looking at Tamron's very good 28-75, there is only size and weight which really favour this new Sony. In Europe, it's supposed to be sold at 1299€ which is the same as the 24-105 G and the latter isn't on par with that Tamron, too, but costs 500-600€ more. So in terms of "value for money" this would have been a lot more attractive if it was priced around 1050 or something. But as even the old Zeiss 24-70 f4 is still sold at above 700€, you can't really expect Sony to price anything reasonably. :D

@juliatrotti
@juliatrotti 3 ай бұрын
Yeah, I can definitely seeing this being a street heavy lens. Both lenses have great image quality and solid performance, the differences will come down to your use case scenario. If you need more light, want more bokeh then the 2.8 is the way to go. If you don't shoot wide open or you prefer being able to zoom to 70 rather than just 50, then the f4 is a good option!

The 20mm wide on Tamron 20-40 is more useful for gimbal work for me, at 50mm I prefer the F1.4 on that range. If Sony make it 20-50mm is more ideal.

Love this review. Thanks. I think you hit the nail on the head with one of your comments: IF you want to retain Sony colours, Sony lens quality and share filters....you can get this Sony lens and save €1000 compared to a 24-70 2.8 (which then lets you buy a Sony 20mm lens for €999 with the savings you make.) The 24-70 f2.8 GM is sometimes overkill (in price AND in weight) for certain photography jobs.

It's a tough sell as a 24-70 GM II user. That lens is already lightweight as is and I don't have front heavy issues like I did the Mark I. However the fact that this lens is even lighter than the 35mm 1.4 GM is insane. You can probably mount this on a tiny gimbal for a low profile setup. Plus it can work well for Super 35 mode video as it's just a 35-75mm.

How is sharpnest compared to sony fe 24mm 2.8, 40mm and 50mm f2.5? Do you prefer have 2 of mini primes or this one zoom lenses? Im thinking to get 2 of mini primes but this lens made me change my mind

50mm f2.5 is a superb small lens. Based on the samples in the video, seems 50mm has better bokeh. Not sure about sharpness and contrast, seems 50mm is still slightly better. However the convenience to use one lens for everything is a big plus when traveling.

Problem with 20-40 is harder to pair a wide angle lens with it. Do you get a 16-28 and have overlap, a prime but not be able to take filters (unless it’s viltrox 16mm but heavy). This 24-50 will pair nicely with their 16-25 2.5 G
@DDHDTV
@DDHDTV 3 ай бұрын
that said, 20mm is very wide and should be enough for many (especially since most are happy with 24mm), and for video active stabilisation you end at around 22mm, which is perfect for vlogging to. its much easier to pack combine with a longer lens. 55 1.8 or 75, 85mm

So if I have a Sony and just want to take pictures of my kids and maybe get out and do some street photography and you could only have one lens what would it be? Likely I would have that one lens for a while until I could stomach shelling out for another one. I know I saw a video where you said 35mm. I’m still working with my Nikon D5300 and 35mm is what I use on that. Sometimes I miss the zoom option, but love the bokeh of the prime. I’m looking into the A7 line. I would love the A7iv but also prefer the tilt screen on the back which it doesn’t have. Looks like the A7V is bringing that back but don’t want to wait for the non-R A7V lol. Also I’m terrible about making decisions

@juliatrotti Uh oh. I think you've given me a case of Gear Acquisition Syndrome (GAS)! Fortunately, I've been inoculated by my 24-70 GMII. ;-) Seriously though, you mentioned something really interesting about lens sharpness, and about some lenses being *too* sharp for portraits. I've been thinking about that quite a lot lately. I've been watching videos of cinema lenses, trying to figure out how films get the look that they do. Almost no cinema lenses are really sharp. They are soft, and intentionally so. So I've been thinking about whether I would want to shoot with some softer lenses sometimes. So far, I'm still really happy with my super sharp Sony lenses. But maybe at my next fun shoot, I'll use a softer lens just to experiment. Thanks as always for the amazing review. :)

Horrendous distortion (given such a small focal range that makes it even poorer), vignetting, Sony’s slower autofocus motor, sharpness just good. I feel this is really overpriced for what it is and it’ll only appear to those with GAS. They should have made this an F2 zoom at this focal range, stick a GM label on it, their faster focus motors and they could have sold it at whatever price they want and it would sell well.
