I have had this radio in for repair now for quite some time. The reason being that it needs a new 6.275MHz crystal and they aren't available any more. This is an appeal for anyone that has a Sony ICF-2001D or ICF-2010 for spares. This video contains a few clips showing the story so far. There will be a full series on this soon. www.paypal.com...

I would just like to say a BIG THANK YOU!! To Radiocruncher and all of you whose comment's are very much appreciated. I have my 2001D back with me and she sounds amazing. I have not heard classical music sound so clear on any radio. Yet this one that Graham has repaired, recapped, re crystaled and over all made to sound the way it does is mind blowing. I cannot emphasise how happy i am with it. All your helpful hints and advice are testament to the result i have in front of me,. No person deserves more credit than you Graham as you certainly crunched your way through this one with help from overseas Spanish influences, Manuel. I am one lucky subscriber of you channel mate. May all your radio crunching digest well and energise you forever more. Best wishes, Lee near Liverpool, 73's!

Wow Lee amazing feedback thank you. I'm so glad that I was able to sort the radio for you and thanks for trusting me with it. It was certainly touch and go at times and thanks to Manuel I managed to get it going once more. It certainly performed better than both my 2001D's. Thanks again and have fun using it but try not to drop it again. 73 Graham

I had to buy a 2nd drive to back up the corrupt one Lee. I have now copied all the files over and formatted the old Drive so looks like I managed to save all the footage. I have edited part one but am struggling to transfer it from iMovie to KZfaq.

Don't worry about it Graham, the footage that is. I have the set back in brilliant working order, so for me, that is all the conformation i need mate. I understand you have your finger's in many pie's so to speak, so worry not. I know from experience from watching your footage. Your faced with some near impossible task's. Most people would give up but i know its all about having the patients of a saint. You have, so! Let's just see what happens. Good luck from me and have a nice weekend off! In the meanwhile , before you find a replacement, you could try to heat the crystal terminal slightly with your soldering iron , like if you were soldering the crystal pins from the factory. It might fix the temporary contact inside by melting the solder and making continuity without having to tear it apart. Good luck !

Hello Graham. There's a Sony parts dealer called Encompass Parts. As a last resort you can get one from them but they really hold you hostage. They want $29 US which is around 22 pounds UK. plus shipping. Hope you can find one elsewhere for a lot less but their stuff is original Sony NOS as I say a last resort. Good luck with it. ATB Doug.

Wow, that's a bit much isn't it. They aren't a very customer friendly bunch to deal with and they charge what they want because they are the only show in town if you want original Sony parts. . That radio is certainly worth fixing particularly now that you have re-capped it. The synch detection tuning makes it one of the best shortwave portables ever made in my opinion. I'll keep my eyes open for you. There will be a few Ham Radio swap meets upcoming in my area, You never know if a suitable parts donor will show up. ATB Doug.

You could try removing the crystal and putting it on longish temporary flexible flying leads. Tapping the board would show up pcb trace cracks, if any and would prove the crystal is defective by tapping it directly. Good luck and hope this helps
@Radiocruncher
@Radiocruncher 7 жыл бұрын
Hi Colin. I'm not sure if you have watched all the video as I took the crystal out and made up an oscillator circuit to test it. I was able to prove that it was indeed faulty. Thanks for the tip though as it would have saved me a bit of time making up the oscillator if I had put it on flying leads first. Regards Graham

It might not be any help, but there is an electronics company in Kasson, Minnesota, Kiwa Electronics; (Kiwa dot com) that sells different performance upgrade kits for the ICF 2010/2001D. I picked up an ICF-2010 in April for all of $4 I think and was considering sending it to them to do the upgrades since I got scared just trying to look inside - past my skill level. Maybe they have spare parts for you? I hope you get it fixed; it is a great radio.

What about using a frequency synthesizer programmed to output 6.275MHZ using something like a MC145151 synthesizer chip not sure if you want to go that route using the 10.240MHZ as the synthesizer clock provided that there is enough room for a addin synthesizer board.
@Radiocruncher

Radiocruncher Yes. But what makes you think finding a crystal will be any easier, or, less expensive. I'm not kidding, a replacement unit would be much more practical- not in any way being flip or glib here.

Good luck with your quest, I have a 2001D which needs some TLC, seems to have lost sensitivity, audio a bit muffled. I know there it a fet that can blow and that the capacitor on the audio c161? often needs changing out. Have you done any guides for this please?
@Radiocruncher
@Radiocruncher 6 жыл бұрын
The fet is easy enough to get to as it’s on the Jack board. This is aparantly due to static build up on external aerials. I have not had any experience changing these as all the sets I have worked on have been fine. You will need to get the board out to replace the capacitors but beware of the flat film cables which are very delicate. This is all in my videos so good luck. Graham

Here's a guy who makes crystals and has a 6275 crystal for about $16. They are in a rather large FT243 case with 1/2" pin spacing though. af4k.com/FT243crystals6000-6499khz.htm You can also have them custom made by Andy in Germany. www.andyquarz.de/
