This might actually be my least favorite "audiophile" grade headphone. EQ is not really that effective on this thing, but if you want to try to tame it, play with pulling down 10k and 3.5k.
These are so familiar that even Wikipedia has a whole page on the Sony pro headphone series: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sony_MD...

For starting, nice review again! Concise, informative and detailed. You mention something important in your video, which is very often overlooked by audiophiles. Professional audio gear is made with special purposes, and they are generally not intended for the consumers! I have the same impression with my ATH-M70x, which I wrote already down at Z's review. It is hissy and splashy and produces tons of sibilance, but it is my only headphone that has the same sound signature as a pair of 18k$ mastering speakers in the studio where I study. You get every annoying detail right into your face, because it has an elevated - though according to the Harman curve I would more say not subdued - 2-10k region. You would hate it :D I would NEVER recommend it to anyone for pure pleasure listening, unless you really know what you want. But as a flawfinding tool it is flawless. The most stupid advice a beginner in the audiophile world can get is to buy a pair of "studio monitors", because "they are flat". No! Go with a good consumer can, which is reasonably flat, but all the annyoing stuff from a real pro gear are removed (like your beloved and really very good HD600). You don't buy military vehicles just for having fun in the mountains!
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
Good to hear that this is actually true. It was really more of a guess from my perspective as to how the engineers who designed this headphone said "okay, that's correct" to this particular sound signature when it ruins my hearing every time I put this thing on lol. Makes a lot of sense now, and yeah I did see Zeos be very disappointed in the 70X, which also is now expected. Interestingly, the HD 600 also is supposedly marketed as a reference headphone and it sounds very close to neutral to me unlike these purpose-made professional headphones. Your advice would also apply to the regular HD 800, which has an annoying sibilance spike that audiophiles have chalked up to a minor design flaw. Maybe it was intentional to a degree as those are also marketed now as the pro version, whereas the smoothed put HD800S is the consumer version.
@andrasnelhiebel6726
@andrasnelhiebel6726 7 жыл бұрын
Well from what I have experienced in the audio field - and I am quite new I have to admit - I couldn't say if "reference" and "neutral" really exists. Today I was in an audio store and I heard several smaller monitors which had far more engaging sound than the aforementioned 18k$ PMC monitors. And I am pretty sure they do not cost that much because Dr. Dre is marketing it... Much like Tyll, I also quite believe in the Harman curve. From that perspective the M70x is neutral - apart from some dips and peaks. But I find the Harman curve is not finished yet. When I listen to the M70x I reduce the treble linearly by 6dB from 3k to 10k. And it improves those headphones massively. Which means that the ideal frequency response in this particularly annoying area should be somewhat different. Most headphone manufacturers know that and put massive dips here - even AT uses other frequency response on other models, including the M50x. The HD800 may suffer from the same problem, that it wants to be to close to the Harman curve in this area. As for the HD600, I think it was never really marketed as a reference headphone, but it is such a damn good one, that it established itself as a hifi reference point. And rightly so. It has a very well balanced sound. But from an audio engineering standpoint I don't think it would be "the" reference. "A" reference maybe. However, many pros swear by the beyerdynamic ones, which are truly a polar opposite to them. By the way, you should listen to the SRH840. They are the closed back HD600 (no wonder why Zeos likes them), even their frequency response fit very well. You would love them.
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
I think my personal reference is the Olive Welti curve. This compensation example from Tyll seems to show after compensation what my ears hear in general as well www.innerfidelity.com/content/first-test-estimated-harman-target-response-curve-various-headphones#vOyvAgoIcEfPtdBd.97
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
You might also want to check out my EQ on my HD 600 if you ever have an HD 600 lying around and a desire to dial in some parametric EQ to hear what I currently called "neutral". It's definitely a softer lusher neutral than what you're probably used to.
@andrasnelhiebel6726
@andrasnelhiebel6726 7 жыл бұрын
This is the curve, what I meant under Harman curve. But you can see, that most headphones have a dip between 3k and 10k, while the M70x doesn't. In fact it has a 6dB peak at 10k. It is not a flawless headphone for sure, but it follows the Harman curve better than anything I know, except for the Oppo PM-3 (which loses a lot of treble over 4k) and the Ether C (which costs 1500 $). I may play with your settings, but I have no issues with the HD600 to begin with. Maybe adding a little air to it. I like mild v-shape, which explains my love for the M50x.

I own a set of their predecessors the MDR-V600, although they accentuate the bass slightly, I am aware of this and adjust for that fact when I use them for Monitoring headphones..I wanted the best usability for a "higher end set of headphones". I've owned this set for over 20 years and literally beat the crap outta them, and they are still going strong. What surprised me was I've never had a problem with the cable going bad either.. I'll be buying their second set of replacement earcups witch you can still buy on amazon.. I will be buying the 7506 version soon, as I am doing more and more studio work at home..Great review.

Been a long time there metal571, good to see you back. Bought equivalent Audio Technica M30 ( foldable M35 were harder to find ) just to compare with my 7506. Straightaway the M30 sounded warmer and had a bit more sound stage while 7506 was more forward ( not as forward sounding as M50 ) and also more dynamic. Wouldn't really recommend Beyerdynamic velour ear pad replacement for 7506, V6, M30/M35 ( sound leakage ) when you can get genuine sheep skin ear pads from Auray.
@metal571
@metal571 7 жыл бұрын
Interesting - I haven't heard about those pads before, but I know there are other replacements out there. The M50's upper mids were also bothersome to me, maybe even moreso with distorted guitar than the 7506. The treble is what really killed me this time around buying these cans though. I heard an M40fs once and it was way smoother than the 7506 but also very "canny" sounding and cavernous like a cheap closed back. Never did give those entry level AT M series headphones a go.

Nice work again! Focal Spirit Pro might be a good modern hp for the same pro-uses. They also have strong upper mids (very easy to hear voices, drum transients etc.) but they are surprisingly neutral for a very closed can. I know I'm nearly five years late, but great review. The MDR-V6 was the first "high-end" headphone I ever bought (and also the first thing I ever ordered on Amazon, back in 2012, along with the Beyerdynamic EDT 250 velour earpads), and I was always confused why, despite being so hyped, I never enjoyed the sound of them. This review encapsulates the disconnect between acknowledging their greatness as studio monitors and recommending them to consumers for music listening. I've always been sad I sold them, because I love how they look and feel. I just didn't like how they sound (for enjoying music). I've long contemplated buying them again just to have a pair around, but I guess there are better ways to spend my money...
@metal571
@metal571 3 жыл бұрын
Hah I had the same thoughts, I owned the MDR-V6 first then sold them because of the upper mid and treble harshness, then made the mistake of buying the 7506 which was just about the same experience all over again. They're iconic... but then you actually try to use them for music and it's not particularly enjoyable.

I recently got into the headphone amp craze and have an iFi micro iDSDm Schiit Valhalla and HD 600's. Just out of curiosity I plugged the 7506 in and have to say. The 7506 is a more colorful and punchy sound and was surprised to like them for music. I purchased new pads for my 7506 after swapping them the sound was harsh, thin, and sibilant. Honestly, a kind of sound that nobody can like, useless even for a pro. The 7506 is not supposed to sound this way, and this was clearly a result of a poor seal. I gave the pads some day of break-in, pushing them against my ears and they start to loosen and seal much better. No more harsh-thin sound. I am pretty sure all the bad impressions about the 7506 are seal dependent.

i own v6s have no issues with their sound quality at all, sounded quite bright when i first got them but after about 100hrs of use they mellowed out now they sound awesome. the grain you are talking about is indicative of the type of dac you are using not the headphones in my opinion. i use a decent headphone amp dac combo running coax digital from my pc and they sound really clear. i will be getting another pair of v6s from amazon was checking out your review to compare these with the v6s, there are so many different opinions from reviewers online about them. too much bass, no bass too much treble etc etc. thanks for posting your opinion.

You need to try other headphones, a DAC or amp can't fix an inherently old and underperforming driver. I've heard these over and over again and all of them sound the same no matter what they're plugged into.

One thing you will notice about the MDR 7506 is when listening to mp3 it will reveal the low bit rate and dirty mids and treble. Try listening to 96/24 and they perform very good. Sound quality on these headphones is not consistent as I have several and sound tends to vary.

Because everybody's ears are different, there's lots of choices regarding cans. The MDRs have high gain for sure, but EQ can always fix that. Decent flat response. My ears are still happy after 20+ years. I've replaced the cups as the thin vinyl shreds after awhile. Personally, I love 'em.

7506s are revelations. They are meant to reveal everything. If you have buzz or rumble anywhere in your system, you'll hear it on these. They are not flattering, they are honest and flat for critical listening. This is why you find them on every film set, and in every recording studio. Everything else in the headphone world is compared to the 7506. The only justified complaint in my humble opinion is the build. The latest versions are a little light and floppy. If you want the same performance and accuracy, but a better build with a little better fit and a bit better bass, try the Mackie MC 250. Also $100.

in my mind most reviews go to much into their "sound".. which actually does not matter. What matters is: does their output translate well to other platforms and speakers: mobile phones, car, kitchen stereo, TV and so forth. That they DO very well. For "listening" to music and smooth music.. no.. they are NOT meant for that. We NEED the grainy partly hyped midrange and treble. Thats the most important part of the "studio monitor" role :-)

+metal571 Ok my fault. I actually have the MDR-V900HD. They're the first pair of headphones I bought in recent years ....2010.....and I don't use them much. But they actually sound VERY good. They're more laid back than the M50x and while the bottom end is slightly rolled off...but NOT LIMITED... along with a slightly reduced upper treble...but again not limited..... they have a very familiar sound to me since I always had Sony headphones in the 90's. MDR-V900HD I believe are the upgrade to the MDR- V6 and while I've never listened to a 7506 I have read the reviews that compare this family. I really like the V900HD with stuff like Hiromi and Alex Skolnick Trio but on albums like the new Opeth which is a bit murky in the final master not so great. The new Lady Gaga sounds great on the V900HD.

ATH 50mx sounded more dynamic but they are uncomfortable and get hot in 10 minutes. MDR 7506 are light and you forget about them when wearing them. So to all watching here they are very good for the price to listen to music but maybe not the kind of electronica dj crap.real music with human voices.
