Spot On Review. I toiled many hours wondering if an RX10iv had a place in my line-up: A6300, A7Riii and A7R....already a strong arsenal. After reading Jay's review, I spent the money yesterday, and, took it to an island off the coast of Clearwater, Florida. How pleased I was to have this amazing grad-and-go camera, walking and hiking, being ready for literally any picture opportunity to arise, and all for a nice light weight (considering you're toting a 600MM capability.) I am a huge fan of my A7R series, and just got back from Yellowstone/Tetons carrying an A7Riii with my 100-400 and my A7iii with my 18-36 G-Master...both amazing lenses. But, I also had to carry a hand towel to control perspiration on my forehead. So, coming from a person who has the best Sony offers, this camera makes you want to get out there and be creative. And, Jay's right....Sony should put the HFR mode on its Pro A7 series....but did not. After reading Jay's tutorial on HFR, I nailed a great slo-mo of 100's of birds taking to flight on the shoreline. What great contributions Jay has made to our hobby.

Thanks for this video. I had the RX10 III and loved it, but this one sounded even that much better. So, I sold the III and bought the IV. I've had it for almost two months now and I'm on overload. There's so much to learn, but it has been fun doing so. Anyway, you bet I want the RX10 V. I'm sure they'll come out with that model, but I hope they'll wait for a couple of years so I can save up. Your suggestions for that new model are spot on. I appreciate your helpful videos.

My RX10IV didn't leave my hands on safari through South Africa, Zimbabwe, Botswana and Zambia. It captured so many great/keeper shots that picking the best of the best is a challenge. Shot mostly in Program mode with adjustments to iso/shutter speed. Also, got amazing night safari shots using the motion deblur mode. All the cell phone shooters wanted copies of the night time leopard shots that they couldn't get! The RX10IV is a big camera, but much smaller/lighter than my mirrorless kit with multiple lenses. The weather/dust proof feature really got tested on safari. Overall, the RX10IV earned a place in my travel kit. The only the that would make my RX10IV travel kit better will be adding the Sony Zv-1 for a tny, point-shoot companion! Another great video. Thanks for your work!👍

Great video! We are still waiting for MarkV! I bought MarkIII 3 months before IV came out. Have loved III and have persuaded many shooters to buy III and IV. My lens is incredible! Will not let go of this camera until I get a MKV with equal lens. Apparently there are some defective lenses out there. I have tried many other smaller Sonys like HX99 for a smaller lighter travel package. However although quality is similar (other than noise) it is hard to keep small camera still for long shots. Weight/ ergonomics of RX is better for long shots. Clear image zoom is great.

Jay, your vids are always informative and you provide great image samples. Way back when I watched your vid on the a99Mii and eventually became a proud owner of it since I decided to stick with a-mount in my upgrade. I am guessing Sony owes you a rep fee for that. Lol. Well, I rented a Tamron 150-600 not to long ago and even though I loved it, I didn't enjoy wrestling with the lens and the tripod with it. But this RX10 is looking like it could be the one where I need that zoom versatility. The Tamron costs about the same, but with this they throw in an attached camera with the lens. Perhaps my tripod and camera bag will thank me later by choosing the RX10-IV!

Hi Jay, I am a professional photographer and also own a Sony RX10 III. The RX10 III has been great bridge camera, considering it's limitations in focusing, and it has produced some great photos and outstanding video. Last month I purchased the Sony RX10 IV but my experience with the RX10 IV want not enjoyable. That said I may have received a defective camera. First of all, 75% to 80% of the time the camera indicated the subject was in focus it ended up being out of focus when viewed on a computer. It always focused well right of the subject even when I tapped on the screen to select focus. Next was the ISO noise, anything above ISO 800 was not usable. I spent consider time wanting to love the camera but ended up returning it. I hope my copy of the camera was a fluke and the camera performs as you indicated

I agree with you, this camera has added a fun factor I've never have before. I actually own this camera and the weight alone is worth considering. This has taken the place of several lenses. I actually liked this so much that I ended up selling most of my gear. The low light factor does not bother me since I usually don't go past 3200 anyhow.

Since buying a new Sony RX10 IV, I have learned tons by reading your previous tutorials on focusing, metering, menu options, video shooting, etc. To that end, thank you so much! What would really help me out the most, and I suspect myriads of others, is how you set your memory functions, and in what buttons, and why? If I missed this video in one of your prior postings, I apologize. But if not, can you please discuss your favorite memory function settings, or steer me to a good discussion about this. I’m looking how to optimize my efficiency in switching from one shooting mode to another, and/or adding functions that you feel are necessary. In retro-spect, I think a better way to do this would be to make a several different videos wherein you focus on each button and memory recall, and how it works, and why you assigned it, etc. Thanks again!
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Tony and thank you for the comments and excellent feedback/ future video suggestions!! I have not made a video on memory recall and how to optimize the camera using the custom buttons. I have showed you how to program the custom buttons though, so you can put your favorite feature here or there. I have resisted this, because everybody is different, and everybody seems to have their way of doing things when it comes to customization. I don't own any of these cameras so I don't really have them long enough to actually take the time to set them up for my personal optimized use. In addition, I can't really record a basic video for new users with the camera set-up that way without causing confusion to those who have the camera at factory settings, which turns out to be most of my viewers. All that being said, I totally hear what you're saying and I will try my best to make a few new How-To style videos covering those specific topics/ features next time I get a RX10 or RX100 series camera. You are not the first person to ask about memory recall in particular ;) Thanks again, Jay

Thank you for this review. I watched this one and your video on the mark III. This video answers some questions I have had but have been struggling to find the answers for including what the differences are between the III and the IV. One of the reasons I am considering this camera is that my current camera doesn't focus well in some situations, especially when I am doing ship photography and the ship is perpendicular to me (I can provide examples) and am hoping this would do better. Looking at your photos it looks like both quality and chromatic aberrations are not a problem at the corners.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 жыл бұрын
I'm surprised to hear the camera is struggling with focus on a ship at sea like that? But to answer your question, the RX10 IV is significantly better with tracking moving subjects. The lens is exactly the same, so no changes there.

No one will believe me, but in a few years there will about 10 ads preceding each video. Thanks for the video. My RX10 iv is arriving tomorrow. I call it more of a discovery camera rather than a bridge camera. It's only a bridge camera if it inspires me to buy a more advanced camera. If it turns out I like the RX10iv as it is, then it's not a bridge to anything. At this point, however, not even having the camera yet, I have no idea what it will turn out to be. I hope to discover what if offers. It's a discovery camera!

thanks for your feeling Jay. I'm travelling a lot for my job and using my RX100M3 has been a pleasure, but sometimes it is too short in focal lenght and has no 4k video. So the RX10 M4 is a real improvement to my gear. It will not replace the A7/A7s I already have, but all in one, 80% of my images can be done with this sole RX10 and the aim of the photo is to have the equipment at the right moment. This bridge gives this freedom without real limitation to creativity....
@Coldgecko
@Coldgecko 6 жыл бұрын
Jay, I have watched your videos for years. You do great work. Most important -- I trust your opinion. Anyway... I am traveling on a motorcycle ride to South America for 3 months in a couple of weeks. Typically I have taken a A7rii with 35/2.8 and a 55/1.8 -- and a rx100v when traveling to cool places -- and I now have a iPhone X. Issues with riding is space -- lack of space as you can well imagine -- logistics of carrying lenses and changing lenses and other gear when riding (I have lots of lenses but on a bike forget it -- got to go small and limiting). Reality is that i have very little time to change lenses unless its night time and walk around a village with a 55/1.8. Otherwise I have to pick a lens and just hope it works for me that night or day. Daytime would likely be a 35/2.8 or a rx100v. I'm always on the run when traveling and if I stop -- its only for a minute or two. So that said, I do take large format pictures and hang them in my home -- swap them out after each trip. Background: I am worried about low light and image quality for large format pictures with RX10 iv. But I love the idea of convenience of a 24-600 (no swapping of lenses and also long reach of the lens so I can creep shots of locals without pissing them off :) ). That said, would I tell the difference in image quality when compared with the a7rii at a printed image 30x40? At night, would you say the rx100v is better given the lens speed at 1.8-2.8? Now for the question: Given my information above, what 2 cameras would you bring given unlimited budget but limited space?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 6 жыл бұрын
Hi again Phil and thanks for the kind comments and question! I think you have a killer set-up as is. If I were to change anything, it would be more for my style of photography I would say. The RX100V is better for low light, because the lens as you pointed out, plus it's really small and easy to carry. Way better than the iPhone X. As far as print quality goes, yes you will see a difference in the depth of field that the full frame format offers over the 1" sensor and the resolution difference between the cameras. For your purposes however, I could see the RX10 IV and RX100V being a fantastic combo. Everything would be covered and the quality is fantastic. Everything is a compromise though. If I were traveling to exotic places, I would definitely want the full frame format and wide-angle lens :) I could see compromising on the FE 24-105mm f/4 G Lens. I would also want s low light super fast lens like the FE 50mm f/1.4 Z Lens or 55 f/1.8 for the weight savings. You have limited stop time for shots, so a point and shoot might make more sense sometimes. The RX10 IV might be the way to go for you and the IQ is good enough for large prints, but the images will not have quite the same detail as the 42mp sensor a7r II images. I hope that helps, Jay

Great review! I’ve lashed out and bought one. Had my first day with it today. Totally amazing little camera....well it’s not little. But compared to my 1DX and a 300F2.8 and a 2x converter it is. The image quality and focus is awesome! I’d even say it’s as good if not better than my 1DX and way better than my 5D3 The exposure bracketing is something I have never seen before 9 shots at 1ev ! To be able to fire that sort of bracketing while handheld is cool as! Took me a day to get my head around the HFR though. Cheers

If anyone in Sony reads this, all I want in RX10 V (not necessarily for Cristmass) is (in order of priority): -UHS-II card slot -Focus point joystick -Improved IS -Improved weather-sealing -Their best AF in all non-HFR modes -Dual gain ISO -USB C for power, charging and data transfer -fully articulated touchscreen -bigger battery with longer battery life -tripod screw mount closer to the lens and not near the edge -5/6K30p 8-bit 4.2.0 (10-bit would be awsome) - internal -4K30p 10-bit 4.2.2 full width, oversampled (60p would be awsome) - internal -HFR same as RX10 IV but at slightly better quality -24-bit audio without XLR adapter? I would pay any money!
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 3 жыл бұрын
Wishful thinking and that would be awesome if Sony did that! I think they are marketing the Sony A7S III for more hardcore video users though unfortunately... If anything it will probably have a new sensor, better AF, 180 flip screen, USH II slot, and a few other minor things. A larger battery would really be fantastic though and I really hope they give us that!
@przybylskipawel
@przybylskipawel 3 жыл бұрын
@@Jason_Hermann Of course it is wishful thnking, however video specs are not high on my wishful list. 4K30p is what RX10 already have. 10-bit would be just a small bonus. Dual ISO is good not only for video. RX10 IV/V is no competition to A7S III. It has three sizes smaller sensor. If they make it an ultimate allarounder, it would be both very compelling and no threat to A7 line. I guess improved cloud conectivity for instant sharing might also be crucial. Also 3-stop built ND would be awsome. That is my list, but many consumers wish same thing. What they implement is up to them and we will decide then.

I don't have a FZ2500 but the lens on the FZ1000 is crazy sharp. The only reason not to choose the Panasonic is crazy camera noise from the OIS (you defo need an off camera mic) and the sensor is cropped effectively you're filming 4k in 37-592mm equivalent.

Hey Jay Thank you for the great video, I am still on the fence with this one. I like it, but $1700.00 and loss of Sony Apps almost makes me just say go A7r iii or a6500. But being one unit is great, no added lenses. I found this video through a Google Survey. I gave it 5 stars on there as it was worthy since I started watching it.

Hi Jay, great review as always! Im not having time for my hobbies lately because of the work, but when I have I try to carry my RX100. I love full frame but lot of time I think a 1 inch sensor is more than enough for most of occasions. Sometimes we only care about our camera, lenses and settings and forget about the fun of the photography... The range of the RX100 is a bit limited, may I go look for some deals on the RX10 :)

Thanks for the comments and I totally hear ya! I barely ever use my full frame gear anymore, because it's so heavy and just not worth the hassle I feel like. However, when I do use it, I immediately go "Oh Yeah", that is why the full frame gear is so much better.... You can't get something for nothing, and that huge sensor requires monster lenses for any kind of quality zoom.... The 1" Sensor is a perfect compromise for a super zoom style camera and very high quality combined.

Jay, thanks for another very informative video on the RX10IV, I have watched most of your others but just came across this one today. I do have 1 question, the RM-VPR1 remote that you mentioned in the video, does it work well for shooting regular video and also for end trigger in HFR?
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 жыл бұрын
Hello, yes it works great for regular video, but I'm not 100% sure about the high frame rate mode end trigger. I think it should work, because once in standby mode, you still need to press the record button. So, my best guess would be yes, it will work for that as well, because your still pressing record. It's possible it doesn't work for that, but I can't really see why it wouldn't.

I would love to get one of these cameras if it had 4k still frame capture, fully articulating viewfinder, built in ND filter and a touch screen that did more than just focus. I have a Panasonic fz2500 that has these features at a much lower cost. If the Panasonic was weather sealed, had a sharper lens, 600mm zoom it would be much better camera than the Sony imo.

Hi Jay, Great job giving us a real feel for what this camera can do. I come from a Nikon D810 ans quality glass, but i am looking for a camera just like the one you are holding to be more of an "all around." I heard you say "back focus" on the video, but i am not sure you meant back button focus or not. I use back button focus almost exclusively, and not being able to do it on the Sony would be a negative for me. Could you expand on that? Once again, terrific video. My compliments!

Thank you very much Duffy and the camera can do back focus via a button, but you must configure it in order to do so. I explain that in detail, as well as a few other focus related features, in this video here: kzfaq.info/get/bejne/bZNgec18vKinn3U.html It should work for you, but definitely watch the video first to see if that solution will be acceptable considering it is a must have...

Nice review Jay. I had Canon DSLR cameras with L lenses, my last Canon being a 5D Mk2. Unfortunately, in 2013 I acquired a disability and found that carrying multiple lenses etc was simply too heavy as a wheelchair user, so got a RX10 Mk3. As a travel camera it was excellent although still noticeably behind the quality of the 5D. From this review, it sounds like the quality & flexibility of the Mk4 is quite a bit more than my Mk3? I've got a big trip coming up, going to Egypt at the end of October. Sony are apparently releasing the Mk5 in October, so I'm thinking of getting that as an upgrade. Part of me is concerned about jumping from a camera that I'm familiar with (Mk3) to something new, so close to the trip, not leaving time to become familiar with it. On the other hand, if it is another incremental improvement, it is probably going to be similar enough, but at better quality? Have you heard anything about potential new features (including your 'wish list') and how soon will you get your hands on a Mk5 after it is released to do a review? Also, if the PlayMemories isn't available, are features such as time lapse now built in, as it used to be through the app? Thanks.
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Keith and thanks for the comments and questions. It's really hard to say when Sony will actually release new models with confidence, because they are so often delayed. However, I would assume it will have the time-lapse feature built in at the very least. I'm not really sure what else it will have though. I'm hoping for a faster 24-400mm f/2.8-f4 lens perhaps, a better battery, or maybe something else. I can't see the image quality being much better, because it's already using the Exmor RS sensor, which is the current best. The most notable improvement the iv has over the III which you have is the Autofocus speed I would say. If you want better images, you would really need to move up in sensor size, which obviously brings along the weight as you know. I also have the 5d mark II w/ L lenses, and it's large and heavy for sure! I will try and get the Mark 5 ASAP, but it's hard to say when that will actually be. I will do a breakdown article on it though, so what you need to know will be covered. I would not worry about a learning curve with a new version of the same camera, it's going to be 95% the same as far as real world use. Sony doesn't make drastic changes when it comes to stuff like that... I hope that helps!!

@@Jason_Hermann Thanks Jay. I've not had time to look at your other videos yet, so apologies if this is covered else where. In terms of image quality, how much of a step up on the Mk3 is the Mk4 with the different sensor? And relative to your 5D Mk2? I mainly found that noise was very noticeable much sooner on the Sony Mk3 vs the Canon, which I think is probably less of a difference with the RX10 Mk4's new sensor? I know the DSLR will remain ahead of the bridge cameras, so need to stop comparing quite as critically! :-)

Hi Jay, love the review, super comprehensive with nice examples, thanks! I'm a newbie wanting to upgrade from my smartphone camera. I was keen looking at the RX10 IV, but the price is a put off. Am also considering the Canon SL2 for a start, but that requires interchangeable lenses. Would that suit me more? It has fully articulated touch screen and a smaller body at half the weight. And supposedly good for Youtubing? But after having bought lenses and all I suppose the Canon package would be more expensive the this all-in-one Sony. Could you shed some light on this? Thanks
@Jason_Hermann
@Jason_Hermann 5 жыл бұрын
Hi Alvin, yeah the Canon SL2 is a great option. That is a DSLR style camera with a larger APS-C sized sensor when compared to the RX10 IV. The RX10 IV is heavier out of the gate, because no lens is attached, and even with the 18-55mm kit lens is going to be lighter. However, once you put a real lens that gets you some serious zoom and quality like the RX10 Zeiss lens, the camera will weigh a lot more and cost way more. Remember, all lenses are not created equal and the image quality is largely dictated by the lens. The RX10 series cameras are specifically for people who want it all in one package, and don't want to ever change lenses. it's heavier, but at the cost of being able to do everything at anytime. You would need a camera bag and several top quality lenses to do what the RX10 IV can do with the Canon SL2. In addition the Canon SL2 is not near as good for video compared to the RX10 IV. The biggest advantage to the Canon would be the larger APS-C sensor I would say, but even that requires high quality lenses to get the most out of it. It really depends if you want invest in lenses and if so, mirrorless cameras are now the future and do not use the same mount as the DSLR style cameras like that Canon. I would consider the Sony A6400 w 18-135mm kit lens which I just reviewed here: www.sonyalphalab.com/my-sony-a6400-review-real-world-content-creators-perspective/ That camera can do everything extremly well, has the larger APS-C sensor and offers a compact lightweight design. You could also go for the 16-50mm power zoom lens instead which is much smaller and lighter weight, but does not have near the zoom range. Then if you wanted to expand your lens options you can check out all the E-Mount Lenses available in my guides here: www.sonyalphalab.com/guides/e-mount-lens-guides/ I hope that helps!

The RX10M3 was the best all round camera I ever had. The focus was a little slow for shooting birds in flight, but still had some superb results. I was hesitant to sell the M3 to buy an M4, but couldn’t resist the promise of fast focus. No regrets, the M4 more than met my expectations, blazing focus and 24 FPS . I have heard some complain that the price is high for a bridge camera, I think it is a bargain for what it does.

Excellent video series on the RX10 Mk.IV, Jay. Sony should really give you a free camera for all of your hard work. I would love one of these cameras, keeping my Sony a6000 and F1.8 lens for low light work. One question Jay: what is the history of the RX10 series letting in dust behind the lens? My 8 year old Sony HX20v now has dust behind the lens and is essentially ruined because it is not worth repairing. I was lucky to get such great use out of it, but this could have easily happened within the first week of owning it. I would be paranoid that the same could happen to the RX10. Any thoughts on this? Thanks.

Thanks for the comments and I wish Sony would be so generous ;) The build quality and weather resistant sealing is pretty darn good on the RX10 series camera, so I don't think it would be an issue. That being said, depending on the environment, I suppose some dust could get in there perhaps? I have never heard of that happening on a RX-Series camera however....
@ForViewingOnly
@ForViewingOnly 6 жыл бұрын
Thanks Jay, that actually does help, knowing that the camera is weather resistant. This text from the Sony website gives me confidence: "High resistance to dust and moisture: Dust resistant, moisture resistant sealant and construction of operating parts allow the camera to withstand rigorous shooting of outdoor nature, sports, and wildlife in rugged environments under rainy, dusty, humid, and other difficult conditions." Nothing is guaranteed, but at least they are advertising dust and moisture resistance as a feature. Thanks again Jay.

Images should be razor blade sharp with this camera! Zeiss optics are awesome so either your shutter speed is to slow, or perhaps you have shaky hands. It's not easy to hand hold at 600mm, you might want to use a tripod and self-timer for the best results. At 24mm you should easily be able to hand hold and get sharp shots with proper steady holding...

I have had this camera for about two weeks now and frankly it's a beast. The quality of the photos is excellent. I do own a Sony a6500 and I find that the RX10 iv focuses faster. I also like the fact it's easier to use and more versatile. Then there's the Leica lens - fabulous. I use this camera for my everyday travels around the city. It allows me to get shots of people and events from a distance that with other cameras I have to be up close which offends a lot of people sometimes. I haven't had the opportunity to try night shooting with it yet but soon. I don't worry about the 12800 ISO limit. I like to keep my ISO as low as possible. When I travel my main camera is the Sony a7iii with Tamron lenses 28-75mm f2.8 and the 17-28mm f2.8. I keep a Sony 35mm f1.8 for night shots. I will take the RX10 iv as my back up the next time I travel. If you want an all around great camera that is dependable, easy to use and versatile buy this beast. You'll thank yourself in the morning.

@@hablemosde1950 I don't shoot a lot of video. I do own a Sony a7iii which I've had good results shooting video with. It depends on your budget. If money isn't an object you could check out the Sony a7Riii. A friend of mine has it and he shoots dance videos with it and gets very good quality videos. I also like the Sony a7III for its low light capability. The a6500 also has better low light quality than RX10iv, I use the RX10 for everyday walking to and from work and for when I know I'm going to need a lens that is longer than the 180mm that I have. The RX10iv is a good camera but I don't think it's what you're looking for. Spend some time Googling and get other people's opinions. If I use set on electronic only, is it ok?
