Sony RX100 V: Still My Favorite Compact Camera in 2021

The Sony RX100 V was released in 2016. Back in those days, it was the go-to compact camera for KZfaqrs and photographers alike. Two years ago I got the RX100 V for $800 in preparation for a trip abroad since I didn't wanted to carry my full T3i kit. Since then I've been using it as my primary travel (when I was still traveling) + KZfaq camera. Many years later, this tiny camera is still my favorite compact camera to carry with me wherever I go.

I just bumbled onto one of these really (really!) cheap in a junk lot, and it seemed pretty impressive. I wanted to see what people who have had experience using one are saying about it. Thanks for the great video. I have been using the Canon S100 as my pocket travel camera, but maybe I'll think about carrying this.

I have a Sony RX100v. I took it to Spain 3 years ago and was extremely pleased with the photos I took. Made some 13x19 and 17x22 prints that are simply amazing. Very happy. 10 months later bought the RX100vi and though focusing is improved, I still prefer the f1.8 lens.

Just got a 5. Sold a 4 a few years ago and regretted it. I took so many pics with me. It even did long trips across Indonesia, Australia, and Bali. I've recently tried the Fujifilm XF10 which is great, but just can't get comfortable with a single focal length camera, so I'm back. I picked the 5 up for around £430 in the UK.

Got the camera and agree with your points. I mainly leave it on 24fps, shutter speed priority at 1/50th, auto ISO and WB, and sometimes I gotta turn on the ND filter. What settings do you use to take photos?

I just bought a good used RX100VA for a great price and immediately put the grip on and ordered another battery and the travel adapter. I hope I enjoy mine as much as you did (still do?) and this was a very helpful video. It looks as though you used a Peak Design strap with your camera? Greetings in mid 2023!

I just got an RX100 V for about $400 here in Brazil, for comparison an brand new ZV-1 goes about $1050. Im pretty happy with the deal

Really excellent breakdown of this camera for real world use! Just bought a Mark V for $360 including underwater case and special water macro lens. Hoping to sell the water gear to mitigate camera cost. Steep learning curve with Sony menu system, so I have that to face, lol. But so far I'm super impressed with all this thing can do. Thanks again! :)

Very good price, in my country Bulgaria it cost 800 us dollars new🙁too expensive, bought rx100 mark 1, even older model it produces very good picture quality and video quality 🤔🙂

I love Love LOVE that this camera doesn’t have a crappy flip out screen. I hate those awful flip out screens. They get in the way, are very obvious when shooting candids or street photography, and it always feels like it’s going to snap off. Tilting screen ftw. Second, I absolutely love that the grip is optional and not built into the camera. No way I would want that. I want this camera to be as small as possible. By making it optional everyone wins.

same, had mine for 5 years now after a 3 year hiatus from point and clicks after my beloved MK1 RX100 had the dreaded lens seizure. RX100 MK5 is easily the best of the line, the ones after it were too concerned with Zoom at the expense of everything else; and the ones before were a bit 'raw' in a bad way, be it reliability or performance. Forgive my pun.

I maybe will buy for edc. an rx100vii for wildlife and far objects, i like shooting my cats other cats birds, worms.. no. no worms i just kidding :D. and for portraits i would like an a 6600 with 16-55 f2.8 or tamron 17-70 to cover all portrait focal ranges in one, or maybe the new full frame a7c with a tamron 28-75 for the same reason? What do you think? maybe i'm better of with an a7r3-a the updated, because of 80 percent more megapixel and 3 times better viewfinder, for everyday video i would use iphone 13 pro, handheld and if i need a gimbal, maybe the dji osmo pocket 2, if sit down to a table in a restourant, or if i need more low light, and stabilazition, in a car. What do you think? - what would you change? Greetings from Hungary! :D

My Samsung NX Mini is a much better camera and has a much better battery life and while it only records in 1080p 30fps is takes better video and better photos. That’s why I bought 2 of them. The Samsung is much smaller and much more affordable as well. You can get one with a lens and battery for about $200 while a Sony RX100 is still selling for about $600 to 1200 for RX100 V or newer. Last but definitely not least is that the Samsung NX Mini never overheats ever.

Hi Khanh! I notice you've got Peak Design anchor connectors on your RX100 V. How in the world were you able to get them through its small "hooks"? Been trying, but have been unsuccessful. Pls advise. Thanks.

Easy. Put something thru that easily goes through then use that to pull the anchor line thru. A thin strong wire for example.

about the 4k in RX100v you need a faster sd card [170MB/s Read Speed] for it, it can record 4K 3-5min without heating issue

The videos won't show show up on my PC. Tried taking the card out and putting it in a card reader. Nothing. The videos can be viewed on the camera.

Final Cut Pro! Tried using Premiere Pro for a little while, but my poor 2013 Macbook couldn't take it :) iMove is a great place to start, that's how I learned to edit!

Just bought one for $190 plus tax from a local pawn shop. Think the battery is shot. Can’t wait to get home tomorrow to take the battery out of my m1 and see if it’s only a dead battery. I was able to take a few pics and video in the store but can’t get it to charge. Hoping it’s just needs a new battery.

It has good bur not great lowlight ability because the lens has a 1.8 aperture (at the wide end).

It's a 1" sensor so don't expect any miracles lol. It's serviceable though depending on the low light available

is it possible to download the extras from play memories anymore? such as the timelapse feature? Pretty sure play memories isn't supported any longer by Sony. I am able to get all the way to the end of the purchasing process when I press "agree and continue with purchase" nothing happens. Tried to do it on my computer but I'm running Big Sur on my Mac (of course it won't run on Big Sur) Phone app does won't even connect to the Camera, cant even transfer a photo (samsung S21 Ultra) I think all my tech is to new. Any suggestions? thanks in advance

I'm not totally sure tbh, the only "app" I had purchased was the timelapse one ~2ish years ago. Haven't tried to download any other apps since then. I'm able to transfer photos to my 12 mini via the Imagine Edge Mobile app, though.

realistically, how often did you use the viewfinder for stills? I generally avoid cameras without a viewfinder but if stills shooters hardly use the viewfinder on this I'm wondering if I might as well get the zv-1 for my compact...

I own this camera and have tried to use the viewfinder twice. I wear glasses and find it way too small. I prefer a viewfinder for photography but do not mind not using the one on this camera.

Super camera is mark 5,but in my country Bulgaria its very expensive - 800 euro, i canot afford it, for that reason i bought Sony rx 100 mark 1, and very much like quality pictures and video also. 🤔👍

I just wish the 4k didn’t come with a 5 minute limit & also you have to wait along time for it to cool down to record in 4k again…the 1080p video looks horrible & kinda looks more like 720p or 480p

Varies a lot. Usually 1080p, 1/50 f/2.8 and adjust ISO based on the environment. Sometimes I'll go slow mo 120 fps so I'll bump my shutter speed up to 1/250 and adjust the ISO accordingly. Once in a while I'll shoot in 4k for b-roll.

We bought this for our archery club to get our members take more, and better pictures during training, lessons and competitions. It was by far our worst buy ever. The camera is amazing if you look at the specs, but the usability is horrible. It’s by far the worst camera I ever used. It’s awful. And I work as a photographer. I always end up shooting with my huge Nikon D850, iPhone or iPad instead. I really want to like it, but every time I try to use it, or try to show others how to use it, I kind of scream and want to throw it at someone. I’m really angry at Sony for releasing a camera with so poor menu system and user interface.

3:24 because not everyone is like you that wants the grip... so it's kinda genius that they offer a 15 dollar grip you can put on it. I for one bought an RX100 that had the grip and I took it off because I took the camera in and out of my pocket a lot and it got in the way. And yes, it looks better without it. So that's why.
