Sony S-VHS Model SLV-R5 has a hifi audio problem with 2 root causes. It threw me for a loop there for awhile, as after fixing the obvious problem, there was still no audio. Yes it is capacitor problems, and more. This one was a challenge.

Never ceases to amaze me the quality of electrolytic caps from different brands and different eras. Ive seen Commodore 64 capacitors from early 80's that have been sitting in a hot shed for years and they still have low ESR probably almost that of when they were new and check out perfectly. Commodore were known for their penny pinching and saving every cent possible too. Then I've seen PC motherboards from 2006 or so and nearly all electrolytics on the board have leaked their guts all over the place. Another great repair on that unit by the way.

When I was in the repair business I would have walked. However since now I work in telecom, so this is more of a hobby, and since I am not under pressure to make quotas and get stuff out the door that is piling up I can take my time, and figure out what went wrong. I enjoy the challenge.

I am assuming it is a hi-fi model being that it is a DVD.VCR combo. Could be anything, tracking problem, the hifi heads are still dirty. If it isn't a hifi model the linear audio head could be dirty.

Yes sir, I allways enjoy your tech videos :-), ive done electronic repair work so i really enjoy your fault finding and vast knowlege, i also get a chance to see equipment that never made it into the uk. That machine put up a good fight lol, didnt stand a chance against you :-D. A nice machine though, well worth the fight :-). The odd thing is when i used to repair c.b radios (long time ago), elna capacitors didnt cause much trouble, but they were just general purpose types, never leaked. Ive never seen the crap purple dura ones (thank god), i will remember them now. My hated capacitors are Tantalum beads, they would allways go short or shatter, not forgiving at all, i replaced them with ordinary electrolitics, never a problem again :-).

The machine is only worth what the client want's to spend on it. If a customer wants it bad enough they'll pay out the oozle to have you fix it. You're right, if the customer decides not to pay the high in cost the the machine is doomed. Hopefully they donate it to you for salvage reasons. Being yours, it does kind of smooth out the decision to work on it. I've noticed that you have lot's of patience, too. That's what it takes and that's time and patients and good thinking. The more troubles you acquire from the machine better your increased knowledge. A lot of folks would be lost by now. So keep on trouble shooting. We're enjoying it, the biggest part of us anyway.

This machine is mine. I had a few given to me. I sold one off for parts, and repaired the other one. Usually people with SVHS machines are more than willing to spend money to repair because if they bought an SVHS machine they didn't do it to rent movies. They bought it to record in higher quality, or edit their home videos on. Now they have their home videos, recorded in SVHS mode, and they need an SVHS machine to play those tape on so they can digitize them. SVHS machines sell for quite a bit on Ebay these days because they are rare compared to regular VHS, and people that have working machines know what they are worth. Because of this people that have broken machines are willing to pay more to fix them because they can't just walk into value village and but one for 15.00. I have looked at Value Village many times. They have plenty of regular VHS machines for 10-15.00 in working condition. One time I did find an SVHS-ET machine by JVC for 15.00. You bet I grabbed that one quick. Not that I need another one, but it is always good to have spares considering that I am in the video archiving business.

@@12voltvids Wow! Thanks for come back. I can see that the machine was a jewel in it's time. Now you've made it a jewel again for you archiving hobby. I wish I'd became an electrical engineer, but I settled for the Aircraft Electrical Field in the Air Force. I was satisfied with that and electrical gadgets always have interested me. Video machines have always fascinated me. My first RCA VCR Selectavision 650 was a top load and I reenlisted in the Air Force at Williams Air Force Base, AZ. just so I could buy this machine. The very first Master tape was, "Superman," starring Christopher Reeves. I've still got that first VHS tape to remind me how expensive they were. You don't have to answer back.

What happens with those lines on either the plasma and crt is Moiré artifacts, this happens with high pixel count image sensors, can occur especially with 4k cameras recording in 1080p
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
Correct. The sensor is down sampled to record in 1080p. I could shoot these videos in 4K, but my monitor will not display the live output in 4K.I should get another cheap HD camera for the videos. My son took my CX220 and now he doesn't even know where he left it. The problem is new cameras have changed battery types again and with the exception of shooting the monitor the 4K unit looks great.
8 жыл бұрын
You could record them in 4K and downscale the footage to 1080p in editing, since the editor software would do a better job of downscaling than the sensor in itself does, the picture quality would be a bit better, and without Moiré.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
The problem is my large LCD monitor that I use for framing, focus ect will not display a picture when the camera is set to 4K. In 4K mode, as soon as I enter record the HDMI output switches to 4K, for those that record onto an external HDD in 4K. So I would be limited to using the little 3" flip out monitor, and that wouldn't be any good, as I can't see it as the camera is over my shoulder. If I were to shoot in 4K, I would post in 4K. I shoot my road trip and scenery films in 4K, but do these in HD only because of the monitor issue. I did a video in 4K recently, and shot the monitor in a demo, and it looked the same. You could see every pixel on he screen.

The SILMICS have the oxygen free copper leads whereas the Duorex do not. Here's the low down on the Duorex II: Higher C/P value then ELNA Cerafine series use of latest materials for separator OFC copper wire lead very low distortions and high sound resolutions, tone with details and clarity, smooth and sweet sound a good choice for cost / performance. I would say these caps served their purpose quite well. They probably surpassed their life span.

If that would be me, when I got any Chinese Made VCRs that failed me when the chassis had been broken, timing mark (with Plastic) that had an error, or when it's failing to operate to playback the video, then VCR chassis will be scrapped and the Capacitors will be salvaged which it's cheaper than to try repairing the Chinese Made VCRs. I do love the vintage VCRs that are design to be serviced which it's very awesome. =)

Question for you - I have a Sony VX-515 DVD Recorder / VCR that (right now) operates intermittently - it's the power supply, which is built into the mainboard. Sometimes (when it's cold), the fan twitches, like on an AT computer when I used to accidently plug the 2 PSU connectors that's how I'd know they were backwards (I was 12). Anyway, taking a heatgun to the board for a half sec, or when it's 75 outside it starts and no problems. It appears that outside the "Danger" area (120v) there is a Zener diode and a few transistors with scorch marks on the board - clear indicator. Switching PSU's I still have a hard time troubleshooting - especially since if the oscillator doesn't oscillate, the fuse and/or mosfet blows (I've had bad control chips and buy the mosfets, only to have a "BAM" and need both again). How would you go about troubleshooting this? Test voltage across the Zener when it's working and when it's not?

How does VHS HI-Fi audio work? I always thought a VHS tape had (from top to bottom) an audio track, a control track, helical video (analog) track, and then another audio track. I cleaned my control/audio head and now no hi-fi playback. Re-aligned control/audio to exactly how it looked (locktite) and it worked, then I noticed the ribbon cable is bad. There are 6 conductors - correct me if I'm wrong - 2 audio channels (+/- Ground), and control/ground?

Leaking caps are a real pain - and one thing I've learned is not to try to clean the resulting mess with isoprop - it can lift the mask off the board leaving the bare copper to the elements. I pretty much ruined a set top box board this way and ended up nothing a couple of caps and flowing solder over the copper in a vain attempt to save the unit (it does still work but it's UGLY). BTW it's one thing to use audio grade capacitors on high-end 'audiophool' stuff, but really, a VHS machine? One step up from a cassette deck for audio quality?

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
One step up? Really? With all that noise from the head switching warble, and companding. Its better than AM radio, but I know of many cassette decks that sound better than vhs hifi. As far as cleaning the traces, nothing works better than Freon TF solvent, but you can't buy that anymore because it burns the ozone layer, and causes global warming. So even if I did have a stockpile of it, I wouldn't publicly admit to using it because I don't want tree huggers protesting my channel, or picketing in front of my house.
@jasejj
@jasejj 8 жыл бұрын
+12voltvids I was being kind ;-) I could see that theoretically a helical-scan tape could be better than cassette but yeah in practice there has never been a true hi-fi VHS machine. Either way, using audio caps seems silly - was it used as a marketing gimmick? As for solvents - whatever works; you're only using a tiny amount and it evaporates so I don't see a problem.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 жыл бұрын
The problem with helical scan for audio is the switching point when used in an analog system. In video, the switching point takes place just before vertical sync and the switch point was off the screen at the bottom unless someone had an underscan monitor. DAT get away with helical scan because it is just bits. They are written much faster than needed, and read back faster than real time, so the data is read to ram, and clocked out at a constant rate. The brief period of no data during head switching is already in the buffer. WIth FM audio, there is a brief pause during head switching, and the audio needs to be muted during that switching point, but you can still hear it on sharp sounds like breaking glass. A warbling sound is the best way to describe it.
@jasejj
@jasejj 8 жыл бұрын
+12voltvids Thank you for taking the time to explain that. I tried using VHS as a long recording time 'hifi' recorder device a few times and experienced the kind of poor sound you describe. i just put it down to the machine not being designed for the task, but now I can see that it was always going to be thus - just as well I decided not to buy that £600 Sharp unit 20 years ago! I'll have to read up on the theory of this - seems more interesting than I gave it credit for.

I had to lower the volume for that period of time because a test tone is very annoying when mixed with dialog you want to hear. Are you immune to the sound any more? Sorry about that. Myself I have tinnitus from too many years of shredding on my guitar cranked to 11, and racing dirt bikes. I have a constant buzz in my ears, and certain things make the hair stand up on my neck. The sound that gets me is when a small child lets out a screech. That sound just about sends me over the deep end. Usually it is in a restaurant, where the parent should have the common sense that a small child should not be there in the first place, but it happens all the time.

I really enjoy watching your video's, however you could have saved yourself a whole heap of hassle by removing every cap & thoroughly cleaning it with ipa / fibre pen before fitting the new caps, new solder doesn't take well to corrosion. The Elna durex II are audio caps & certain batches leaked terribly, not necessarily a crappy cap, they just like many other manufacturers got stung by that dodgy electrolyte formula in the late 80's early 90's, I still have durex II's fitted in a vcr from 1992 & they are good.

I dont have a scope, just a meter. Should I swap the whole audio head from the 575 to the R5? Other than connections and solder joints, what am I missing??
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
Audio noise / distortion on a single channel could be a couple if things. The audio is fm modulated on 4 carriers, 2 for each head. The left channel frequencies are 1380 and 1680 khz, and the right 1530 and 1830khz. Notice something here? 3 of them are in the AM broadcast band. If you have a local am station broadcasting around 1380 or 1680 khz it is going to get into the head preamp and cause noise on the left channel. If there is one around 1530 it will affect the right channel. This is why the head drum has metal shielding over it, to reduce interference. Head wear will also cause noise problems. You can't put a standard VHS head on a svhs machine and expect it to work in svhs. The head gap is smaller on svhs head drums so they can handle the higher frequencies recorded by the high band recording on svhs. If one will physically fit standard recordings will look fine but svhs recordings will look like bad heads as they won't work at the frequencies required for svhs.

@12voltvids
@12voltvids 4 жыл бұрын
The AFM deviation is the frequency deviation of the audio fm carrier. Both the video and audio signals are recorded as fm signals just like fm radio signals. Don't mess with the deviation. This is a record setting. Too low and the signal will be quiet, too high and you will over modulate and cause severe distortion on playback. You need a deviation meter to set up. Also these units use a form of Dbx companding. Crackling sound usually indicates an alignment problem or worn AFM heads. Look at the rf envelope from the audio preamp.

I do wash down the board with isopropanol, I just didn't show it. I do cut quite a bit out to save time. I also replaced the caps in the head preamp, and put the original one back in, and I didn't show that either.

i bought a Sony deck that looks very simliar to this one as a non runner paid 10 notes for it, took the lid off and every single cap had leaked and leaked they did every where most of the boards were shot it's the worst machine ive seen regarding bad caps, the cost of recapping and time repairing the boards would of out weighed what i could of sold it for, now used as a donner machine

The SLV-555, 757, and R5 were horrible machines as far as pissing capacitors go.

"audio grade caps"... Stupid marketing! BTW my JVC VCRs use ELNA caps and still work..

you're lucky. I have seen many elna caps fail in jvc VCRs.

In fact all JVC VCRs from the 80s use ELNAs...Oh, and I see a Matsushita (Panasonic) IC in that HiFi board...

You need to buy caps direct from china on EBay. I pay a nickel a cap and no duty in the USA for power supply motherboard caps for instance.

So then what you are saying is that 10 caps for 1.00 is too much? I picked up more different values than I needed for this one. Bought a bunch of spares. I don't buy on eBay because shipping to Canada is too costly. I won a bid on a dat recorder for 5 bucks and and shipping was going to be 95.00 so I walked.

+12voltvids You have to be very careful buying caps on ebay, AliExpress etc anyway as. there are a lot of fakes around. What's the point in buying quality low esr Japanese caps for 10 cents each if they're the very low grade ones rehashed? that said I know a good Chinese seller on Ali who I buy from if I'm in no rush and am spending less than Farnell's minimum spend for free delivery.

Yes you are right., Sometimes I just get a deal. I went back and they are gone. Here is one I bought. I bought 100 TIP 122 transistors for $15 once I use them to fix pinball games. All were good so far. Are these junk? So far so good. 50pcs NCC 6.3V 3300uF 105°C Motherboard Electrolytic Capacitors 10mm×25mm ( 170875064432 ) Delete item Add note ITEM PRICE: US $8.94

Yes well I do work per hour for people. I do not warranty my work as its just labour. However, if I leave and the same problem happens again. I don't charge just to keep on good terms. So if the part wont last 30 days, I am not happy. Often the new parts don't even last 5 years, what are you talking about. LOL

You want the Croks too?Didn't think so. I'll just stick to my 5 cent Chinese capacitors. They sound good enough for my old ears that I abused back in the day I thought I was going to be a rock star,

Nothing wrong with that. I generally stick to high quality 105C ones when I'm replacing caps on switch mode power supply outputs because of the loads that they have to handle, and they last longer in my experience. Most everything else gets cheap ones.

KZfaq places the ads, not me. I just check monetize the video. When a video is popular, they place more frequent ads. That is the way it works.Yes I do make a little money from the ads. Sorry if you don't understand how it works. I make perhaps 2 cents for a video like this, but if there was no revenue flowing I wouldn't be doing it.
