This is soo interesting! I was expecting a glowing review of these being that they should be the bigger, badder sounding sibling of the SSC5 bookshelves. As always, I really enjoy the way you describe things and look forward to more great videos! Still loving the heck out of my SSC5 bookshelves. Every time I turn them on they put a big smile on my face! Happy Holidays!

I'm surprised that you did not have a better experience! I have both the CS3s and the CS5s. I use them with the CS Subwoofer, SC center channel , and the CS Atmos upshooters. I drive then with the STR DN1080 and get a really nice soundstage!

I used the str-dn1080 with the same sony core series setup as you for 3 yrs. I agree they do sound very good. I upgraded the str-dn1080 to the sony STR-ZA3100ES and the speakers sound better. Its a great setup and I don't know why people don't give them a try. Sound is subjective and we all have different taste in sound and music

Thanks for the review. I purchased the CS5 bookshelf speakers and I couldn't be happier. Great sound, I'm actually blown away by the sound coming out of these things with the Sony 2 channel receiver and an audio-technics turntable. Even my wife has shed a few tears over the amazing sound - hearing some of our favorite vinyl again is extremely nostalgic. Terrific speakers, way better than a pair of polk audio bookshelf speakers I had years ago.

Theyre a bit harsh at 1KHz though, shame you need £100 worth of crossover components to fix this problem
@chriscuthbertson
@chriscuthbertson 3 жыл бұрын
The extra volume of midrange and bass frequencies caused by the additional driver makes the tweeters sound quieter at the same volume level. they would need to adjust the crossover to increase the output of the tweeter to balance with the extra output from the mid/bass drivers... I'm guessing they are just using the same crossover in both.

You can't go wrong with a sub. Just don't get the wrong sub. My Emotiva SE8 works well with my Sony SS-CS8 bookshelf speakers. After tuning, of course. The SE8 is down firing so you may want to look at SVS sealed SB1000. However, most powered subs will help greatly. Even a 50 watt Parts Express powered sub is better than nothing.
@cheapaudioman
@cheapaudioman 3 жыл бұрын
Couldn't agree more. I've got the 50 watt parts express sub at work and I have a sub in my office where I test speakers I just don't turn it on unless I'm listening for pleasure so I can measure things better. There is a Sonance sub that best buy sells for $500 which goes on sale for $350 and it's a sealed 10" with about a 300 watt amp that goes down to 27hz and is fast and accurate and it's awesome. Never even heard of that brand until I came across it. It's tiny too and perfect for music and good for movies.

You really need a sub anyway. Most towers/ bookshelves have very little bass, until you start getting into larger drivers or higher end stuff. That sscs9 is a decent little sub, especially for the price. It would match well with your bookshelves.

I have two set of the bookshelf’s and the center channel with two Klipsch 8inch subs. Was looking to add the towers since their $200 for both but the more reviews I hear the more I think twice about them. I was think about upgrading them with GR- Research, but I feel I should just buy a better tower for what the cost of the speaker and upgrade would come out to.

Suggestion for a cheap tower speaker to review: Dayton Audio MK442T They are $240 shipped (last I saw) and there are restocks available for like $110/pr. They have gold plated binding posts, and a "real" (2nd order?) crossover. A pair of 4" paper cone woofers, and a 3/4" soft dome tweeter. Oh, they are a transmission line design. With two woofers, they will have some vertical comb filtering - at the height right between the 2 woofers, you will hear even dispersion. But above and below this height you will have limited midrange. If done in an MTM (midrange-tweeter-midrange) then it could help the sound by minimizing the floor bounce cancellation. Bigger speakers are harder to do right. Maybe, the impedance drops because they wired the woofers in parallel? This will tap out the amp, and you'll get anemic bass.

Subbed! I have the Core towers and the bookshelves and my experience with the towers has been really good. I love them. Granted, I do have them elevated about a foot(I like my tweeters high). Mine sound like the bookshelves but "bigger". More bass, a bit more mids and highs are crisp. I like them a little better than the bookshelves. I do have an 8" sub just to add some low low end but they do fine without it on. I listen at a low to medium volume typically so maybe if you crank them they get sloppy? I've had nothing but excellence so far though. I've had them about a year or so. Sorry your experience was so poor with them!

I think the bookshelf’s sound better because it is a 2 way (sort of) vs a 3 way. Think of how everyone loves the kef coaxial speaker design. One driver with the tweeter in the center allows for no phase issue because there’s only one place the sound is coming from. Also some fancy 3 way speakers (like klipsch heresy or focal aria) are tilted back so that the sound from the driver reaches you ear the same time as the tweeter. The crossover causes that delay.
@brucegarethgeorge
@brucegarethgeorge Жыл бұрын
The bookshelf is also a 3 way. Small changes in port location, height at where the drivers are located and possibly, and changes to the cross-over could be the difference.
@popularzero
@popularzero Жыл бұрын
So I think some of the sound stage and mid-range issue might come down to if you're setting a more aggressive crossover on the low end. I got quite a bit more sound stage after I moved the crossover from 80hz to 50hz. I have the bookshelves as my rears in my setup. That being said I would say for value the Bookshelves are the better speaker overall. I wouldn't return the towers, but if I had to do it over again I'd buy another set of the bookshelves. I do have to say if I didn't have these paired with a subwoofer I wouldn't be as happy. I think that they work well in a home theater setup with a good toe-in and some height adjustment if you have the full set including the subwoofer, but I think you're spot on about the bookshelves being a better overall set of speakers.

Bought the bookies used for only $80. Sound good for rears in a HT set up. Ran into the towers later and was excited to buy them on the spot ( used) for only $40 total. Hooked em up and was immediately unhappy. Wish I had taken the time to find this old review and slept on purchasing but was a rare moment of FOMO. Was convinced someone else would scoop them up if I waited. Lessons learned: go outside of a store to get better internet on your phone to read reviews, and don't assume anything about speakers in the same " series".

I think Jamo has a nice set up and when it's on sale I think it's only $240.amzn.to/38ecGO3 That's a heck of a value. Just add a sub and you're done. Otherwise I'd go sony SSCS5's in the front. I've heard their center isn't a good as the bookshelves though. You can use really whatever you want in the rear channels. I've never been one to believe that the surrounds need to match the fronts. Gavin, Unfortunately, I just don't have enough experience with towers to speak to them confidently. Even towers need a subwoofer most of the time and because of this I have a hard time finding the value to invest in them when a pair of bookshelves with a sub actually have a more complete frequency range and also being cheaper and have more freedom of placement. This channel is really just an extension of how I choose speakers and systems for myself. Fortunately, it seems to resonate with the a lot of folks here on youtube. I, for sure, want to get some towers in to review but from a purely economic standpoint it's hard for me to make that investment while I'm still bringing all of these components in personally. Hopefully I'll be able to get some companies that would like my take on their products and I will have the opportunity to start diving into towers much more. Thanks so much for watching and I really appreciate you taking the time to comment and watch the videos.

@@cheapaudioman No Worries, I understand. Towers are so darn expensive unless you get cheapies like the Sony's you reviewed and we all see the end result. I always thought of towers as the complete package when it came to audio, but that just shows my lack of knowledge and understanding, not to mention I don't think I have the audiophile ear to distinguish between $500 bookshelf speakers with a sub vs a tower. I agree, I'm more of a "what am I getting for my money" kind of person and your reviews help out tremendously. My Mission 732 speakers are a good 25 years old, still work well but looking to upgrade. I believe the Missions were entry level back in the day and I don't know how much they cost (I inherited them from my father). Anyway, love your videos, great insight and I'm sure I'll pull the trigger at some point on a pair of stand speakers in that $500 range, just don't which pair.

Poor Polk T-15s can't get no love and have been relegated to speaker display stands. ;-) Thank you for the honest review and really, tower setup instructions. Would you recommend going with four bookshelves and a sub instead of getting the towers if I am setting up an entry level home theater? Would it make sense to use the bookshelves as right and lefts in a home theater? Should I mix brands? I really want to get the bookshelves and use them in an atmos setup, but I was told that mixing brands was not a good idea. I was also wondering about the core center channel. I have heard that it was not as good as the bookshelves either, but I really don't want to use another bookshelf as the center. Any thoughts? For what it's worth, the Pioneer BS-22 bookshelf loudspeaker used to go on sale for ~$50-$75/pr. With my music and listening room and gear (and ears), the BS-22 is/was a better choice for two-channel audio. I would question paying the current MSRP for the fading BS-22, though. I think, (I haven't heard or measured them, so this is just a guess, but), most likely what's happenning with the towers vs. the bookshelf ones, is that that extra (bottom) woofer, being (most likely) crossed over pretty high or not at all, (maybe even being driven "full range"?), it is so far away (relatively) from the top midwoofer and tweeter(s) that you are hearing the effects of phase cancellation at certain frequencies, making the towers seem less "coherent"... That plus the extra added baffle step diffractions from the larger front baffle of the towers, those too are probably what is making the towers seem "muddy" and/or "veiled" in comparison to the bookshelfs. I honestly don't think that the towers just simply having the front port vs. the rear port (of the bookshelfs) is negatively affecting the sound as much as just the phase cancellation anomalies between the drivers and the added baffle step diffractions probably are, because front ports can be just as effective as rear ports if they are tuned reasonably well. (Maybe the front port does have *something* to do with the relatively weak bass in THIS specific speaker's design, because maybe it wasn't quite implemented properly with these towers, but without being able to measure them or even hear them for myself, I'm just guessing here, based on my experiences with other speakers of a very similar design over the years.) I kinda wonder if Danny Richie from the GR Research channel could do anything with those towers to make them actually sound any *better* than the bookshelfs... OR that it would even be worth even trying to improve them at all, given their relatively cheap parts and build quality... My guess would be that the towers are probably NOT even worth messing with, just get the bookshelfs instead in the first place, (along with the matching sub if desired), and just be happier to begin with!
@tybera1114
@tybera1114 2 жыл бұрын
These aren't rated for good bass sadly, I mean at 45hz it isn't great to "feel" bass that and the single small bass tuned woofer is not enough to really move air. The floor standing speakers were designed to be paired with their core series subwoofer while the bookshelves were designed to be standalone 2.0 or surround speakers. The lack of balance really comes from their need of a subwoofer and not being able to drive down into those lower ranges. However, these speakers with a supporting sub down at those 28-200hz and you have a GREAT frequency range and great volume with plenty of well rounded bassy air movement. If they had designed the towers with full bass, you would need to really cut it back to pair it properly with the woofer, but they are already designed cut back with the woofer in mind, it's almost like when they designed them and tuned them they always had that configuration in mind and never tuned them without a sub. I really wish they would advertise these more as home theater speakers to be paired with the woofer or if they just sold them as a kit. I think the towers are worth messing with *ONLY* if you plan on making a 5.1 or 7.1 system with them. The bookshelves as fronts for something like a home theater aren't quite enough and really get overpowered by the sub, you have to turn the sub way down, that's where these fit.

I appreciate your review. This system has been around for a while now. Currently at the time of writing this, Best Buy has the CS3s on sale for $150 each and the CS5 priced around $130 for the pair i think, i dont fully recall, but upon listening to the demo at the store they sounded very lack luster. Ive read reviews where people love these towers and im no audiophile and cant describe all of the subtle nuances as one would, but in the store, the sony cs setup sounded muddy and dull. But then i came across a demo on YT. I know YT compresses audio and all of that but I was impressed by what i heard. Maybe it has something to do with that person's equipment? Tharbamar made a couple of great vids showcasing the towers. So maybe its the audio equipment. It may also be some things were changed with the components used in initial construction to cheaper more inferior components. That in turn may have affected the sound quality from the time Tharbamar made his review til the time you created this video up until what they have in the store on display now.

It's a shame about these. If they just had the same sound signature as the bookshelves with some added sensitivity and bass extension they would be awesome. I have a feeling the cheap cabinet construction is causing some problems with the larger cabinets. There may also be some phasing issues with the added woofer cancelling out certain frequencies. I've always liked speakers of this design with a 2.5 way, or in this case a 3.5 way crossover. Then you can place the second woofer in its own separate enclosure and cross it over real low.

Thanks for giving them a review and your honest opinion. After your review I had to go get my fluance Rt85 for my main listening space to my living room where my home theater is and my now 4 Sony sc3 are and two sc5 to make up my 7.1.4 home theater setup. I removed my home receiver from the equation and plugged the player into my fosi phono amp to my fosi amp to just two sc3. In this setup as a stand alone 2ch setup I sadly agree my favorite records lost everything I came to enjoy again listen on my sc5. I then tried running my fluance to my receivers phono preamp and did the same test on pure sound out from the receiver, about the same, maybe the bass was a little heavier.. Then I listened with my audyssey setup with the receiver running my person room calibration through the app and it all became clear!! And why they seemed so much better replacing the sc5 in this setup “Home Theater” not 2ch music without heavy tone mapping These have been great at adding surrounding bass and effects to our movie watching as far as height I agree the on the shorter side but for our movie watching with reclining seats I never thought about making them higher. But as far as my fluance and my main music listening with be going back to its main room with a pair of sc5s! I’m sorry you were as disappointed as I for this review as a I am. Before moving my record player back around I did remember my front 2 sc3 are at most two weeks old and my rear 2 have almost 2years of daily sound played through them. I decided to run the same test through the older sc3 in the same order. On the fosi amp setup were I was finding my newer sc3 trying to be overly bright borderline harsh only to be muddled by the bass the older ones are almost creepying towards warm while playing the higher notes cleanly. But they still are as lively as the sc5. When I played them with through the receiver with correction everything was smooth and balanced (yes you must be on point with we’re they are angled) So I’m not sure what to take from the sc3. Yes they played better with heavy room correction and it leads me to think they are really only meant to be used in a receiver movie view setup. But As far as sound differences from my new to old this a case of brake in or cheap manufacturing were some will sound better than others?!? I still agree with your conclusions that as a main source of audio listen the sc5 are what you should by one for price and two maybe for consistency in manufacturing (I now have 3 pairs of the sc5 throughout my house and they have all sounded the same out of the box and paired in the same room with an older pair) I am truly puzzled and will need to dig into this further. Maybe ill tear both old and new apart and see if there is any difference to the cross over or internal dampening materials, etc. Now you have given me something to do! How the tides have turned!! Lol. Thanks for given us all something to watch and good luck on your way to 1k

@@timgrande6332 I think these live as a home theater tool. From what both you and I have experienced I don't see these for music. As far as room correction goes, I normally bypass the fronts to maintain the "flavor" of the speakers but in a strictly home theater application room correction and automatic EQ settings are a godsend with speakers with limitations. Thanks for the deeper dive into these. Very interesting for sure. Just something special about the SSCS5's

@@timgrande6332 very good. Another interesting option for this speaker is to take a look at the crossover and then even start to tweak the crossover to bring the bass more inline with the treble. Could be a fun intro to crossover design for DIYers. I would imagine there isn't much there and probably a simple one at that to keep the costs down. As well as bracing, port length, and even dampening material. I bet this thing could really be brought up significantly with a bit of work on the inside. Heck, I bet moving the port from the front to the back may do wonders.

Thanks for the review and other videos Cheapaudiman! For other people looking at this video: I got the bookshelf version of those speakers. Let me tell you, they have the best sound quality I ever heard. Good treble, good midrange, and good mid-bass (Range of mid-bass: From 75hz to 130hz) and good low bass. The bass is enough for stereo. However if you want more LOWER and more powerful bass. Then just add a powered subwoofer with built in low pass filter. The best audio balance 30hz to 20kz I ever heard came from these speakers + subwoofer. If you guys want a very high sound quality system for the money, use a these bookshelf version speakers + Klipsch 10 inch powered subwoofer with a good amp. I guarantee, that the sound quality is way way better than JBL Partybox speakers and also better than large bookshelf speakers with 6.5 to 8 inch woofers in them. :)

Hi Cheapaudioman, I can only think of 3 possible culprits. I'm assuming they have identical drivers. 1. Towers probably need more break in time; 2. Crossover used is better on bookshelves: 3. Internal volume and dampening is better on bookshelves. Just my opinion.

I have a pair of cs5s in my theater setup, and found a pair of cs3s locally on FB marketplace for $75 for the pair, for a price that low I had to see for myself the difference. I got them just before work tonight so I haven't had very long to listen to them yet, but from the short time I got with them I got the impression of a "bigger" sound from them than the cs5, which makes sense, bigger tower. And I do feel that they go louder than the cs5s just a tiny bit, and more safely, for example with my older Onkyo HT RC370 I sometimes enjoy me some loud metal, with the cs5s hooked, after a couple hours of running them at 78/100 volume the speakers start to sound like they're struggling, I can hear some background scratchiness that has me worried so I back off the volume to about 69/100 where they seem happier The cs3s after a couple hours were louder at 74/100, and were perfectly comfortable cranking out 80/100 for a similar 2 hour runtime without any scratchiness that lead me to believe any damage might occur. I hope it just comes down to them being picky about amplifier, or you possibly had a bad pair, but if not, I can just swap back, after all, $75 is actually less than I paid for my cs5s, so I can live with this little experiment Edit: after a couple months with these I can agree that the cs3's do not sound as good as the cs5s. At a higher listening volume (particularly in metal music) I find them to be harsh on my ears, I lowered the midrange frequencies in the equalizer so my eardrums wouldn't feel like they were being stabbed. I'm not sure how to describe it, these cs3s sound decent with stuff like pop music, but metal music (almost all music really) was handled better by the cs5s imo.

Replaced it with two Klipsch R-12SWs that were $150 from Costco.) And picked up the STRDN1080. Sweet first AVR. I'd like to say, yes it's my first HT setup, but watching Whiplash, Howl's Moving Castle, and other movies where the music is not just background. the 5.1.2 set up from the Sony lineup I purchase is well worth it to me. Now I watched a few of your videos, love them, I thumbs up when I remember and congrats on the subscriber count, anyways, now I want some Emotivas. Some possible explanations: 1) You could have gotten a lemon. You only tried 1 pair. 2) The sides are longer, allowing for different resonant modes in the cabinets. 3) The crossover network may be sub-optimal when adding another woofer. 4) Lobing, polar lobing and frequency cancellations from the woofer pair not accounted for in the crossover network. 5) While they may look the same, they may be using different parts, or even built in different factories, on different equipment. *6) Maybe the new ones aren't broken in, and you're comparing them to your old pair which are. (Maybe not the most likely, but possible). You would really need to test 3 pairs of each to get a good idea if this is indicative to the line, or just outliers. ....still.... I bought the bookshelf version. I can use them as rear or side or upstairs bedroom speakers. This makes them more versatile. Btw, i really am impressed with their midrange pace, and the well-defined leading edge of notes. Good timbre and tone on these. Bass is lacking, and rear ports are not ideal as the signal output switches front-back near the tuning frequency. Front ports, in general, are superior. But then all are inferior to sealed, so it's relative. Passive radiators are a good compromise. Overall, the little bookshelves were a good buy, and sonically impressive. I can recommend the stand-mount version. Curious about the tower performance differences; would require further investigation. Definitely an answerable question, however. Could be as simple as unhooking one of the midbase drivers. Maybe their frequency range is too high for a driver pair coupling. I would start there, once cabinet damping and positioning has been done.

@@MasterofPlay7 The midrange is surprisingly nimble and clean on the bookshelf version, and the entire tweeter response is rather impressive. With the towers using the same drivers, it's likely to expect they perform in a similar way. Which leads me to suspect room interactions on the bass may be the issue for his pair. Every room is different, and not every speaker sounds good in every room. The room-driver is kinda a system, in my view. So we would need a bigger sample size before applying his experience as a generalization. It's hard to imagine those towers aren't a good performer for that price category, but it's rather interesting the experience was so different for his setup. Makes me want to buy the towers and compare for myself, actually. Maybe take some measurements too. The one's i do have, the bookshelf, are really very impressive tweeter and mids. I haven't seen any overwhelming number of negative reviews for the towers on amazon either, suggesting there may be some unusual factors at play. If they sound good to you, they are good sounding. Guess the reverse could be true too. Thanks for giving your experience with them. Enjoy the music.

@@MasterofPlay7 Interesting point. Maybe old amps have larger capacitors, so have more stable energy discharge. Maybe that makes the quick transients of the nimble Sony more persistent and realistic. Perhaps some amps "flutter" more, adding two rapidly changing responses together, and smearing the signal. I've also tried a Tripath digital chip amp on these Sony's, and it sounded fantastic. Haven't tried the Texas Instruments chip sets yet. Tripath were known for being smooth and "tube like". Could be similar to your experience. These speakers did need a bit more power from the dial, though, compared to similar size 6.5" woofer bookshelfs. Maybe they just need that inertia so they can respond quickly, but smoothly. The sustain and decay on notes is fantastic with these Sony's. That's not something all speakers can do well: Quick attack, smooth sustained decay. Really impressive enjoyable speaker.

Are the towers 3way or 4way? Is there another crossover at 100Hz for example so the second woofer can concentrate on 100Hz and below? What residual high frequencies are coming out of the front port? Cancelation occurring because of the front port? What happens if you place the bookshelf speakers on top the towers and add another stereo amp driving the additional 2 speakers? Then we have cabinet size, a large enclosure with little bracing but supporting 2 woofers now? Interesting they don't sound the same....

I live in a small apartment so I can appreciate a speaker that doesn't blast my movie into my neighbors bedroom. These speakers open up those possibilities, If I go behind the Sony tower speakers to plug in an hdmi cable It is unbelievable, I thought the speakers were off. If you want speakers that don't wake your kids or you neighbor or roommate... These speakers open up a chance for you to have your music on without someone rushing into your man cave and telling you to turn that down. I cannot guarantee that your acoustics in your man cave would allow you to finally play music without being told to turn it down, but these speakers seem to be designed in a way that doesn't blast music into a bed room behind your speakers... I haven't tried out blasting music through the walls in front of the sony towers yet, but the fact that I might be able to play my music without starting a speaker battle is a plus to me. Do you have a large area where you can listen to music as loud as you want for as long as you want or are you picking up a set of towers that are going into room with a shared wall. Face these speaker away from that wall and It should cut down some noise complaints. At the very least I believe that these reason why they towers focus the sound in such a laser focused sweet spot is for those of us that live very close to other people , roomates, spouses, kids... that don't allow us to watch a movie or listen to music whenever. As I stated before it might offer the possibility of not causing a noise complaint. If you want to blast music through the walls behind your speakers These are not for you.

I think these towers are designed for a full home theater system to operate with given limitations. Each of the speakers in that theater system responds to it's position in the sound stage with more or less performance compared to other speakers. There is a balance between speaker design characteristics and what the audio sound stage creates in the media being listened to. There are a lot of factors to balance in order to create a near perfect listening experience that satisfies broad public taste.

I'm kind of building my home theater I have my center speaker and my surround speakers I just need the front. By the way the towers are on sale right now a Best Buy also for a $150 each. What do you recommend one pair or 2 pairs thank you very much in advance and once again thank you for sharing all your knowledge on all these speakers and order stuff that you review thank you again a happy holidays... happy Thanksgiving !!!
