It's a Sony was their slogan and every Sony device had a little sticker that said that on it. I probably have some sony devices that I left it on. My original KZfaq channel was called technomon, but I changed it so as no confusion with techmoan and have for the past 8 years just used it as a test channel. When this one took off I took the content I had on the other one and put on this one. What I mean by "took off" was became a monetizing eligible channel.

'It's a Sony' - so true back then. Now one needs candle to find equipment that performs equally well. I sort of agree that ever since digital audio perfected itself and became widely spread at home it also killed one of it's biggest inventors.

Thank you ! My machine is working for the 1st time since the 90’s! Great tips , I must have watched this 25 times before I had the confidence too try. The clip part was the make or break moment for me, as well as re soldering the power wire.(not a pro w 30 years experience) but it’s done!. 12 volt vids is the best. Followed to a T even w new tape. I don’t know if it’s a function of the d-5, but mine only FF for a few secs and stops without a tape. But with a tape non stop. I have been playing on battery for the last 2 hours. I am so stoked. Thanks a million.

I always wonder how many people worked on this design, really impressive. It is clear to understand why such serviced device have a price (complexity and knowledge to repair) however there some sellers (mostly merchants) that want to sell these older gear for big bucks only because it is vintage (and not serviced at all), really sad. Nice video and repair, thumbs up.

Nice machine, from time when Sony built really good products not only for Pro Audio/Video sector. Of course time takes toe on mechanism and they all develop problems. I'm really surprised the rubber pieces hold together after 4 decades, unlike the Sony dual deck that was given to me from 1995 (Made in Maleysia). From what I read, it is the tape decks produced by Sony that many recognized as reliable, dependeble high quality equipment that consequently made them one of the best sellers on the North American market. It's a Sony, now mostly in Pro TV Broadcasting equipment. Some of their 1980's and early '90s home audio equipment still very much catches my attention as some of the best made. Also, the portable Sony deck reminds me of Kudelski Nagra portable equipment used by reporters and film industry. I found somewhere technical interview with Stefan Kudelski recorded by Polish TV about his company and work he did with Polish Radio and TV. I would never say that Kudelski lived outside of Poland for most of his life past his childhood. His spoken Polish and technical vocabulary were so perfect, it puts me and many Poles to shame, because we use many borrowed terms instead correct Polish ones. Very interesting man who received a few awards for his contribution to world cinema.

I've got six of those D5s, five of them working (now!) & a donor. biggest mechanical problem was with the pause arrangement- previous mr fixit had re-assembled it wrongly so it worked maybe 50%, & he'd bent the hair-spring. had a bad meter on one, & a bad capstan servo on another. I also tweak the replay eq & record bias. Ohsone & other sony execs used to travel back & forth across the pacific while sony were getting set up in the USA, & would schlepp a D5 with a pair of headphones on the long flights. tiring of this, Ohsone had a mono pressman recorder modified for stereo playback. Morita found out & demanded that the thing be put into production, telling the plant to make 10,000 units in the first run. everyone at sony was astonished at how quickly the "walkman" sold. the TC-D5 led directly to the whole phenomenon. (59:08 I'm like 'no, not that one!' :-) )

Watching this one was I was riveted to the spot. Brilliant video as always. I can believe that it sounds every bit as good as a cassette deck at the time and probably a mid to high end, at that. I had a Uher CR-210, a similar thing and auto-reverse and hooked up to a Pioneer based Hi-Fi and was superior in sound to a CT-F 9191. When the Uher developed a fault, and yes a little clip went ping never to be found again when a latching piece of plastic that looked like a comma broke!

@markanderson350 if it's the d6c, it lacks a speaker, vu meters, and ability to record to type 3 tapes BUT as a tradeoff with the d6c you have a speed adjustment slider, line level output via 3.5mm as well as headphone output via 3.5mm. I know I'm missing some features, but the d5m sounds best out of any tape player I've used. Just my opinion. If its the d5 pro ii, the only difference between the d5m and the pro is that the pro has XLR mic inputs as well as RCA line output, whereas the d5m has RCA line in/out as well as regular L/R mic input. Again I'm sure I'm missing some things but thats all I can think of off the top of my head

I like the propper heavy brassed storage flywheel, i bet there is hardly any fluctuations in speed. Yep i've seen that woven style tape on many devices and yes it won't stick back on once removed. I watched this all the way through and turned up the brightness on my screen so I could see every detail. Why ? Because I have one of these, which I got as a staff bonus when I worked in the Hi Fi trade. I didn't use it very much because the Walkman Pro came out a year latter which had Dolby C. It used to be great when you got paid a yearly bonus in Hi Fi and Video gear. Its as a shame they didn't bring out a Dolby C version of the TCD5

Another reason to 'subscribe' 👍 brilliant vid, I have the smaller 'pocket version - full cassette' unit TCM _ still working that I changed the belts on et Love it cos of its sound and record quality PLUS the leather case and this no doubt would also have had several case options. I was surprised it didn't have an inbuilt mic?/s as my unit does. Also of course these were primarily used for TALK / Conversation et not music though of course the frequency responses on them were pretty damm good. 😎

I did a repair recently on a Sony radio, cassette, cd player - belt replacement et from the late 90s. I was gob smacked to find the amount of cold solder joints from the power supply through, some were just a drip of solder with holes 👀 This unit reminds me of the early transistor sets from Hong Kong (Empire made 😎 UK) Often put together in sweat shops with components so tight together ? ! Also of course the smoke from the soldering processes re the resins used et was toxic. 👀

What timing! I just buttoned up a "fixer" TCD5M last night after replacing two of the belts courtesy of your previous videos. It no longer eats tapes in play mode ! And the speed is much more stable. But the motor makes noise, looks like the metal wheel is jumping a bit on the rubber flywheel. And I also found that one of the mic channels is very low. And Fast Forward isn't nearly as fast as Rewind. So courtesy of this video I've ordered Rubber Renu and I'm going to pull that pulley you yanked and touch up the rubber bumpers/tires. Also going to try the same on mating surface of the motor/flywheel rubber. BTW, why the "E" in the title name? Is that a different model?

Like that kind of blue mat on the workbench,,,with built in magnets to keep metal screws from machines u take apart,,kept in place. What is the actual name of the rubber placemat,,,I need to buy one of these online. Looks to b a well solid built machine,,,a fair bit of work top and bottom with moving the circuit boards and the circlip washer,,,i,ve done that b4,,,and it went flying across the room,,,but very lucky to hear it land on the 4th shelf of my bookcase cabinet,,,and happened to find it again,,and put back in place the 3rd time round,,,nasty tiny thing that is to lose there,,,,to remove the rubber drive pulley to repair the rubber on it for fast forward and playback,and with replacing the belts,,,and freeing up the mechanism,,,and repair the input jack to get the recording working right again as it should,,,and I hope the rca centre pin stays in place. Very nice compact good looking round level indicators,,,and adjustable recording levels,,,with a automatic record level switch built in too.

@@GerardPinzone Both, I use mine mostly for playback. Compact cassette was never the most superior format as far as audio quality goes, but there is something special about deliberately inserting a cassette and pressing play. The hiss, the dropouts, imperfections, and making small tweaks to the deck are all part of the fun. IMO, when the tape is playing well, counter is turning and VU meters dancing, it's mesmerizing. There is a special feel in this physical format that digital just doesn't provide.
@GerardPinzone
@GerardPinzone 4 жыл бұрын
@@the_rubbish_bin I remember traveling to Tower Records to purchase Denon metal blank tapes because they were absolutely the best to use with my Aiwa AD-F660 cassette deck. The combination would yield recorded copies from a CD that were almost indistinguishable to the human ear. I would create a mix of tracks from CDs to play on my Sony walkman connected to my car stereo through an antenna jack passthrough. I remember having to calculate run-times of the tracks to ensure they'd fit on the sides of the cassette. My preferred length was 90 minutes. When the tapes wore out, I'd go back to Tower Records and demand free replacement since they came with a lifetime warranty and Tower would honor it. This would be considered nostalgia. On the TV show Mad Men, they explained: “Nostalgia - it's delicate but potent. Teddy told me that in Greek nostalgia literally means ‘the pain from an old wound.’ It’s a twinge in your heart far more powerful than memory alone.” Nostalgia for me is pain. I don't wish to relive it. If you have given me the technology to have all my audio in FLAC files tagged and organized on nearly infinite digital space in the 80s, I would have done so in a heartbeat.

@@GerardPinzone When I was a kid in the 90's I had a cheapo GPX dual well cassette, radio combo and a Lenoxx Sound personal stereo. I made mixtapes with the GPX and listened to the them on my personal stereo to and from school. I grew up almost Kenny from South Park poor. One Christmas I got a box of Maxell XLIIs and didn't care for them since my GPX only supported type I and the recordings on the XLIIs sounded too bright. Now type IIs are very desirable. I got a Discman in 1999 and didn't like that if I moved it at all, it would skip. I've never liked optical media because of that. Early 2004 I got an mp3 player and loved the convenience of it. It was easy to download music for free then. But Mp3 is lossy compression and when I afforded better headphones, it became more noticeable. A few years ago, I came across the LO-FI jazz hop and Vaporwave genres and remembered that my most positive experience was with tape and went back to it. Now that I can afford decent gear, tape is even more enjoyable to me.

Hey, if you care to take a look at this: I just got a TC-D5M. When I play it with no cassette tape inserted, there is noise coming out of the right channel. It sounds like a white noise, and it does not go away even with pause button pressed. The VU meters do not have any perceivable movement, except for a sudden "jump" of the right-channel needle upon turning on (then it quickly returns to the leftmost position and stays there). This is all under 6V plugged in. Is this normal or do I need some repair? I probably won't be able to send it to you because I live in China but I think it would be great to have your opinion.

Would you please tell me how a normal TC-D5 should behave when you play with no tape or blank tape and turn up the monitoring volume to 8~10? @@12voltvids There is LITERALLY 2 things on the brown side of the board. a light blue little thing that sticks up with tiny legs that says 4.omc TDK99 and the thing next to the ir crystal that lights up, is dark blue and grey and looks like a capacitor but small it's got 2 legs going inyo a + and - sign, it says 00 and a sign that looks like a uF together 6.3v 100. there is NOTHING else on that side only the contacts for the batteries, on the green side, nothing sticks out.

Tell you what when the guy that sent it gets it back he can open the top and confirm that the bypass cap is indeed grounded. It was not a ground it was a 10pf cap on the mic input to bypass any RF that might be picked up by the mic. It is on, trust me, but even if it wasn't it wouldn't affect operation unless you were recording with a mic standing at the base of transmitter towers.

Hi Dave. These screwdrivers work pretty good and don't cost much. You could black out the name on the handle easy enough. Great fix www.homedepot.com/p/Husky-Precision-Screwdriver-Set-7-Piece-67123H/302435926

The ones I got are great, just the silicone grip slips so I removed it. They are actually JIS not philips so they fit the Japanese micro screws perfectly. I bought them out of a Japanese site.

Yes some stores have batteries with their own name on them. Radio shack for example had there own. I was given a box and would rather not have KZfaq come up with a reason to demonetize my video as that could considered a sponsored video. It was actually a battery vendor that will print your own store name on it. These ones had my channel name on them and of course the company name.
