I am by NO means mechanically inclined, but I just needed to thank you for putting this video up. My old SONY VCR just broke a tape and ejected some of its parts, and I was able to find where the parts went and put the machine back together by watching your video and paying attention to where things were inside. Thank you so much for this incredibly informative and well done video. It was invaluable in figuring out what to do.

I have a few old tapes like the one you showed from the very early 80s. They were my dad's tapes. Amazing how much heavier those older tapes were compared to tapes made years later.

That robotic sound ... Specially woith older mechanisms which in STOP mode had the tape inside the cassete and when pressing PLAY the whole system had to pull tape around drum. Later thet only kept tape milimetrical from drum.

Ugh, I've owned a few Sony VHS decks. An SVO-160, an SLV-575UC, an SLV-750HF, and an SLV-R1000 (a Super VHS). Great picture and sound, but fairly complex machines with some plastic parts that would break (such as one of the spring-loaded gears you've pointed out that drives one of the guidepost shuttles). Then you've got problems with the advance motor and the loading carriage motor; the plastic universal joints develop splits, which cause them to slip on the motor shafts, keeping them from driving the mechanisms. And, yeah, the infamous sticking take-up arm. And, with the SVO-160, I had to replace the capstan bearing as it was causing the capstan rotor to scrape against the motor coils. Fortunately, the coils didn't get damaged badly enough to cause the affected coils to short. And, mentioning the SVO-160, it was also fun cleaning up and recapping the SMPS power supply. Elna "Longlife" caps. Yeah, right... When I was in the room with that thing plugged in, I suddenly started smelling rotten fish and I knew something developed bad caps. Then there's the ubiquitous mode switch problems that plagues so many VCRs of many different makes. I've truly enjoyed your videos. Absolutely superlative repair skills.

Thanks for your informative videos! I just aligned my VCR tape posts by watching the picture improve or get worse as a tape played since I don't have an audio scope but it worked! I really enjoy watching your videos even though most of this is foreign to me and I have little mechanical ability. I guess I am just very impressed with people like you who have such a vast knowledge of electronics and seem to be able to fix things with such ease.

Actually I incorrectly said all Sony's were the same. This is not true. Some of the late model units used a different chassis, as they were made by different manufactures. All the Sony made machines used this chassis.

There are 2 optical reel sensors on the circuit board under the reel tables.If you look @ 30:45 you will see them. One is under my thumb and the other one just above it. These measure the reel rotation so the machine knows the tape position especially during rewind so it can slow down as the tape gets to closer to the end. These are a fairly common failure.W will probably di a video showing that failure at some point in the not too distant future when I do another series on VCRs.

I have a cheap JVC and a Sony VCRs both from 2002. The JVC still works, the Sony doesn't have sound (bad capacitors). These are decent units with decent image. You don't need a high end fancy VCR to enjoy a movie. I think an unit from early 2000s is a good choice if it still works, chances are it has seen little useage and will be in good shape. Just be sure to keep it unplugged unless you are watching a video. This way the capacitors will last longer.

I love your videos! I had a SONY HiFi VHS machine that was eating tapes because one of the arms was sticking thanks to the lubricant. This also happens in all their audio recorders, and the ones from the 1960's can get so bad that some metal parts get fused together! We call it "Glubricant". It is a nightmare to fix on the audio units because you have to take almost every part out and clean and re-lube it. Fortunately, there are no problems with timing gears! I love how you explain every step of the repair process and show the machines as they thread the tape and so on. Fascinating stuff. Also looking at the torturous tape path, it is no wonder that VHS tapes wear out so quickly. Thanks for posting this video.

Fantastic video! Best one on Sony VHS VCRs on KZfaq. I actually had an SLV-555 I bought back in 1989. I was a workhorse before it bit the dust nearly a decade later. Now I have a problem I hope you might be able help me with. I'm currently using SLV-920HF, a much later model than the 555, but which still has the Sony made mechanism. I've just started having a problem with it. During playback after a few minutes the tape will start to slow down and speed up. With the cover off you can actually see the reels in the cassette slowing then surging. If I press Stop then Play again, it plays normally for a while before starting the behavior again. The problem is worse when recording. After anywhere from 2 to 15 minutes, the VCR just simply stops and the code L 20 01 appears on the screen and the display on the front of the unit. The 01 is the code for "Abnormal Take-up reel rotation." Despite all this, FF, RW, forward search, and reverse search still work fine. Do you possibly have any insight into these problems? It's difficult to find anyone with experience troubleshooting these units anymore and I don't know where else to turn at this point. Thanks!

KneeBittenNymphs Could be the capstan motor.Many of those sony machines, the capstan motor bushing would bend from the pinch roller pressure and cause the rotor to drag slightly on the stator. This causes the drive IC to overheat and then ou get the speed fluctuation and eventually it stalls out.

I just replaced that bue glear (part number 3-736-147-01) on the loading arm recently on a Sony VCR that has this mechanism, lubbed all critical parts as you mentioned only to find afterwards that more 2 gears and the slide mode plate had slightly damaged teeths that cause the deck to go out of aligment within 2 to 3 tape loadings. What a bummer. The parts numbers are 3-736-177-01, 3-736-176-01 and 3-736-143-01, being the latest the hardest to find for a reasonable price. I hate to see this vcr going to waste, i guess i'll wait for someone to list cheaper parts on ebay or something. Fixing and even wasting money on VCRs today is pointless for many, but i find it to be a great mind exercise and also by doing it we're somewhat preserving history.

Hi ! Nice and useful video. I have a Sony SLV 777 who had a problem with that leaver that pull the tape to audio head , was stuck. Buy it like this. Take it out clean it and now is ok. But now I have a clean image but no sound. If I use the manual tracking I get sound but the image get worse. Some tapes play with intermittent sound. Trying to adjust the audio head but without success, I got either just image with no sound or sound with poor image or very bad - noisy image with very bad sound ( like you play SP tapes on LP - slower ). Any advices , please if is not to much trouble. Thank you.

Do you know anything about the Sony VCR SLV-N77 I had this thing since around 1998 and it finally stopped working. What it does it has trouble taking the tape, but once it goes it it feeds it normally and you can see the tape go around the head an d the head does spin. However the tape doesn't move. It sits there and it tries to eject the tape but doesn't eject all the way. I wonder if it is a motor or capacitor issue? I wish I had access to maintenance manuals so I have a better idea what is going on.

i don't know what it is but the Picture is somtimes with small white dropouts. Maybe it come's from the recording that is from a analog Satellite Signal and the dropouts are from the original Signal recorded or the Recorder loos the track (sometimes tracking problem).
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 жыл бұрын
Volker King Small white or black dropouts is usually the head grounding contact is not making a good connection and allowing static charges to be picked up by the drum. This comes, of course from the heads flying around, and running an insulator, in this case plastic (the tape) This is why some tape manufactures like 3M but that black back coating on their tapes. That was to dissipate static charges.The head grounding contact will be either on the top sine, or on t he bottom side of the drum, and is typically a copper strip, with a carbon ground rod making contact with the drum motor shaft.

Hi 12voltvids,Great tutorial, it was of much use to get the first issues fixed on my VCR SONY SLV-835 that was the broken blue gear which I glued and one of the loading levers. After some years of non-use I want to get the VCR back to work in order to digitalize some home made tapes. So after having the gear issue fixed I was happy when the tape was properly loaded again. However, the tape is not going to play at all. When pressing "Play" button it tries to do something but the tape is not moving forward and after 3 or 4 seconds the VCR stops the process and releases the tape from the head drum without ejecting it. Fast forward, fast backward, eject, pause and even jog backwards pic by pic is working but not pic by pic forward and no normal play. So, I was wondering if there is any trouble with the sensors on the sensors plate but I am not quite sure. Do you have any clue about such failure? Any advice how to clean the sensors? Any comment, help, explanation is much appreciated. I have carefully checked all the holes to be aligned in reset position when I did the repair of the gear. So I am sure that the issue is not due to a wrong reset position. Is there anything I can test, check to localize the issue. Could it be another gear that is hidden in the chassis and not properly working? Sorry to bother you but I am helpless.Cheers!Martin

Check the capstan bearing housing. They bend and allow the rotor of the capstan motor to run the stator coil. If the top of the bearing is copper colored then it is the old type that bends. If it is silver it is the newer style but they still eventually bend and need to be straightened.

I just grabbed that one as I figured that youtube wouldn't complain about copyright if the image was shown on the TV. I got popped last year for a copyright violation because a 10 second shot of the screen was in the shot, and that really pissed me off, as there was no intend to violate, I was repairing a TV, and had an antenna on it when I was testing, and the fox show just happened to be on the air at the time. About 10 seconds showed, and I was blocked world wide and got a copyright strike. I re-edited it, blurred the screen and sent a nasty message to youtube about it. (see the panasonic TV flickering screen repair and you will see what I mean)

what size hex wrench is that for the set screw on the guide post? I also have the 676UC where the machine acts "strange", doesn't obey the commander remote, pause causes the capstan/pinch roller to engage but PLAY causes them to disengage, and then the machine just STOPS - have to turn off the machine and then turn back on to get it to do anything (but it never plays). Any ideas? Could an encoder switch problem account for this? I don't think the switch has ever been cleaned. Thanks for any input.
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 9 жыл бұрын
drcoolit Yes that sounds like the encoder switch. Could also be dried grease on the pinch arm assembly, or possibly a broken plastic piece of the pinch roller that broke when grease dried out and jammed it from moving up and out of the way during an eject cycle.The hex key is I believe 1.5mm or 2mm.

12voltvids First, thank you for such a prompt reply. I have found your videos on VCR repair to be superb and I applaud your efforts and work. For some reason, despite all my attempts to get this SVL-676UC to return to a working condition (strangely it was working but had the broken blue gear when it came in but otherwise all the controls, etc. worked - now NOTHING works - it loads the tape but then it just either sits there or tries to retract the tape but doesn't do that entirely and then just shuts off - and this is AFTER I cleaned the encoder switch (but the performance was the same before I cleaned the switch)). I keep wondering if there is something ELSE that needs to be done after removing the circuit board to gain access to the blue gear to "reset" something but for the life of me, this has me puzzled. The transport is otherwise exactly the same as the 555, 315, and some other models (595, maybe others). This HAS to be something electronic. Also, for some reason, the slide is now shifted out of alignment and it won't move -- it meshes w/ a red gear (maybe others) but I can't find a way to turn a gear and get the slide to re-align w/ the holes in the plate. I have two of these 676 models but one has a shot (frozen) capstan motor. Can the motor be replaced w/o having specialized equipment to realign the A/C head? (I know that exact positioning that head is a critical assembly point) Thank you again for your reply and maybe some day if you get your hands on the 676 you may be able to do a video on that too since maybe there are some points re that machine that are unique and could help others. I think it's a great machine -- if only I could get it to work! Kind regards -- Phil

@@12voltvids have you got any tips on a dim display on a Sony SLV 715 Vidro recorder. I have exchanged the complete filament from a doner unit which is better but could be better. Do you put a small AC voltage across the filiment terminals to burn off bad deposits or is there a capacitor which needs changing on that detachable board as there is 3 under the display itself
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 8 ай бұрын
@@johnny1408 if the supply viktage us correct and the display is dim then it's the display tube. No you can't burn anyyhing off the filaments. There is nothing to burn. Burning requires oxygen and the tube is under vacuum. Most likely the vacuum is slowly failing and when gas gets in the tube stops working.

I'm sorry to bother you again, I've got an identical unit to the previous one (Panasonic AG-7350) with a control head issue (it seems). Tracking control on the front inoperable, tracking is unstable and goes all over the place (good-> bad-> good -> etc.). Tape counter doesn't run (Pretty sure I've seen this symptom even on your channel before). Tape path is good. RF packets decrease and increase in amplitude very evenly. Not an issue with PSU or video modules for sure. Anything I could try that isn't AC head replacement? :/
@12voltvids
@12voltvids 7 жыл бұрын
Scope the output of the AC head amplifier. Just follow the wires from the AC head and see where they plug into the board. There is usually a test point around there to give you the output of the ctrl head.

I checked on my scope and compared it to my working unit. My working unit has a nice steady pulse to low that goes with the head switching signal, while the broken one has absolutely nothing, it's stuck on high.... Going to trace that signal and see where it comes from. Thank you.

From what I understand, he's just using a pre-recorded tape so any official movie you can buy on VHS will work.

Yes it is 31 years old now. I bought it is 1984 when I first entered the electronics repair business. Paid 1500.00 for it, and it still works as well as it did when new. Comes in handy for some repairs.

Where did you get that? Sony has been making VCRs since the early 70s. They invented the VCR. It was the u-mstic 3/4". Sony has been making half inch video recorders since 1965 I have one it's real to real. Their first consumer VCR was introduced in I think it was 1975 it was a betamax. They were also one of the three companies working to develop VHS along with JVC and Matsushita. It actually when Sony was working with the other two on a home video format the early designs were cast off as not good enough by Sony standards and Sony thought everyone was on board with beta when they launched it and then JVC stuck a knife in their back and launched VHS which was one of the formats that Sony had worked on with them and had been cast off early as being inferior as far as picture quality went. Sony changed the VHS in the late 80s when they finally admit that beta was dead.

@@buretehudesi yes correct Sony made only betamax until they released the slv555. They tried hard with beta I did have a better picture the VHS and it did have at one point over 40% market share here in Canada but in the end there were a few factors that killed beta one was video stores not stocking movies in beta format that was the biggest nail in the coffin was video stores only stocking VHS. In areas where independent stores carried both beta and VHS beta recorders did quite well but in areas that video chains set up and only stocked VHS that was a death sentence for beta. Beta did however become the de facto broadcast standard and all the TV stations we're using the professional beta not the professional VHS and the pro market is where Sony made their money where they could sell a VCR for $30,000 or more and a camera for 40 Grand or more so beta did make Sony tons of money the consumer version was there for the purest that wanted the best at home recording picture quality but in the end VHS won out. People wanted long recording times and just didn't care about the picture quality which is too bad because beta did have a better picture it always did and had it not being bad marketing initially by Sony they could have stopped VHS dead in his tracks.

A 1730 with a noisy drum. Bearing failure is the problem. You cab open that top and remove an e clip which will allow you to lift the entire cylinder off to reveal a big rotor magnet and stationary stator coils on the bottom. You can oil the bearing shaft and it will work for awhile. I did this with thus one when I first got it but it eventually seized up and I had to bite the bullet and change it.
