Typically love your content. This is a vlogging camera. No one is vlogging for 40 mins straight. This camera isn’t geared toward what you are using it for. It’s a known problem. Mine has never overheated. Most people aren’t live streaming with it. Also some people have had success opening the side doors for cooling in case you want to try that. Others have literally just aimed a fan at it. This camera is unbelievable for the price. Totally worth it for 90% of the people who use it. You shouldn’t discourage people from buying it. I almost didn’t buy it but so glad I did.

I don't have this camera. But your video DID get me searching (successfully) for way to beat this 4K overheat issue with a Sony a99II. So indirectly, you helped!

Love my ZVE1 and don’t have overheat issues, but I have a significant hot pixel issue. The camera, it seems when it warms up, has hot pixels develop on the sensor. The pixel mapping runs often and gets rid of them, but these hot pixels can appear, suddenly, after say 15 mins of shooting. They are only visible in very low light at ISOs. But I just got back from Disney World and was upset to see three hot pixels on some of my dark ride footage. Then later in the footage on different days, it disappears, obviously when pixel mapping has run. I did a test recently where I ran pixel mapping and no hot pixels. I then shot at 30fps for 15 mins, then did a few mins of 120fps. Then I went in a dark room to crank the ISO, and yep, another hot pixel appeared which is only visible on a full sized computer monitor. Try the test yourself, it is the only real flaw I’ve seen in this fantastic camera which I love. Sony must know this is an issue given the auto pixel mapping runs very often at startup, at least on mine. I have not seen a single reviewer mention this but when I’ve asked around the ZVE1 community others have noticed it also, including another British guy who has been to Disney World!

Thanks for this rant @glyndewis. I am only guessing within your circles of expertise, similar to your interviews at BenQ, you would have access to camera design engineers who can explain the challenges of creating a perfect camera. I am guessing for some that means a camera that will not overheat. I am chuckling here. Sony seemed to have escaped the heat challenges Canon struggled with for years. I am curious if we photographers / videographers are expecting too much for too little of a price tag. We (certainly I) would like one camera to do it all. Yet as the technologies advance we in essence are carrying around sophisticated pieces of complex electronics and mechanical devices. More demand means more energy. More energy means more heat. Every device to compensate for heat dispersal also adds to accumulated weight. Almost as though the heat demands we place on our tiny handheld devices have reached a technological physical boundary.

What do you plug the fan into? The usb-c cannot connect to the camera because those batteries are not strong enough.

Its made for short use content, Sony have the FX30 and FX3 for small camera long term content, so it kind of makes sense. but the ulanzi fan is another option and its a lot cheaper.

would a metal body help with the heat dissipation?

With this cooling system, can you now actually use it as a 10bit / 4k webcam for longer sessions?

of you've already bought the camera and are within the 1 yr warranty, send it back and wait for mkii

And we thought Canon had cornered the market on hot cameras ! There is no doubt that there has been a lot of innovation with the camera bodies coming out from all manufacturers, but you do wonder if the pace of change is is taking precedence over quality. Kind of like the Boeing of cameras.

You could have used a 3euro usb fan and a powerbank to fix the issue. Powerbank can also supply dummy battery or even battery in camera

Great video, mate! You're spot on - Sony should have identified and addressed this overheating issue during the product development phase. While it's great that 3rd party accessory manufacturers are stepping up to the place by releasing hardware to rectify this issue, it's unfortunate that you have to shell out additional money for it. With that said, I can confirm that I did not hear the fan at all during this video, and I was listening intently for it.

Well done Glyn. Sony need to address this - and urgently - AND with a view to swopping out the faulty kit for purchasers of same (!) when the issue is addressed. £2+K is NOT to be dismissed after all.

This sound like click bite advertisement for Tilta (coincidentally or not;) Camera will not overheat if Auto Power Off is set to HIGH (on top of screen being open etc). This is the most important point which you mention only at the very very end of the video. Not cool.

that's a latent manufacturing defect, I'd write a letter of complaint to Sony and CC who you bought it from. They should repair/replace/refund or if you're happy with the fan, pay for that too. Excessive heat will shorten the lifespan on any electronic device. It's not as if this is a £299 camera.......

I think for your usage a fx30 makes much better buy.

Wow Sony once again clueless about testing their own products, Everyone who vlogs/streams on Twitch goes way over an hour. I go on as a casual streamer and its minimum 2 hours. If this camera was not intended to stream then why include the option. I bet the Sony ZV E2 with a built in fan is right around the corner. Dang I was about to get this cam. I’m not spending $4K for a FX3 for a fan 😂

I like sony.. But i go to lumix s5ii, fan in body.. Never overheat.

it doesn't overheat. If you want something to record forever the buy the FX3. The ZVE1 is superb, you don't need a fan.

It's a Sony, that's what they do.

For a camera at the price level there should not be issues like that. If we except lack of quality at those prices companies will just keep doing it. Should not need to spend extra money to keep a camera going.
