I just acquired a Sony WM-AF64 with a fully-functional radio but a broken tape deck. I replaced the belt with one supplied by a Slovakian dealer mihokm on eBay (type Sony WM-AF64 belt). Unlike the fat belt you used as a replacement, this belt is much thinner but a nearly-perfect replica of the original belt (which, on mine, turned to tar). This OEM-like belt does not flop around and transmit wow and flutter to the capstan (and, of course, to the tape) and has absolutely no chance of rubbing against the capacitors. Additionally, these belts are factory-fresh; no belts from this vendor are over two years old.

The AF-64's mechanism is definitely of better quality than that of the WM-F2085 (released in 1990), with many more metal parts. The WM-F2085's mechanism has all-plastic belt pulleys, with the only metal parts being the capstans and springs.

Hi, I very appreciate your shearing. It’s so helpful. I have the same model as this one. It got the same problem as you showed here. However I have not see the processing of disassembly the device like how to open the back cover and separate the PCB from the body. You may teach me how to do it. Thank you so much!

Your video will help me to fix my Sony WM-DD11, which also has that capacitor issue. I didn't know that SMD looked that easy.
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 5 жыл бұрын
Hehe yeah. this is still the "big stuff" when it comes to SMD so its fairly okay to solder. when you get down to components that are smaller than a millimeter it really is not easy to solder by hand

I realize it's been 4 yrs since you made this video. Great video. I have 2 WM-AF64's with no volume. I'm going to do the repairs. Question how did you determine the UF value of the capacitors? and are they all the same value?
@HardDiskLover

values can all be found at 17:50 but they are also written on the capacitors themselves

Hi! Great video. Now I know why my unit won't work properly.. My model looks almost exactly the same, but it has recording ability as well. It's called WM-BF67. Mine probably has the same issues (broken belt and barely audible audio). Maybe I'll challenge myself and try fixing it :) Anyway, thanks for sharing your knowledge 👍🏼

Hey man. Amazing channel! Thanks for doing it. I have a question. My Walkman is also very quite. Does this always mean the capcitors are bad? What else could it be? If it is the capictors do I have to replace all of them?
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 7 жыл бұрын
Could be. It's always good idea to replace SMD electrolytic capacitors from old equipment. Some more tings you could do would be cleaning things like switches, Tape heads, connectors, Potentiometers, ect. with isopropanol or even better with contact cleaner

Hi! I wonder which measurements the new belt has? Especially which length? Maybe you remember where you got your belt from and can send a link? And I heard you are german? :) Nice Video!

I just picked up the same model with the same issues (melted belt, bad capacitors) but I have an extra problem in that the ceramic capacitor next to the A on your board is missing. Do you know what the specs for those capacitors are so I can buy a proper replacement? I can't figure out how to ID them.

Capacitors may have leaked because the polarity for the connector is negative on the center, which is reverse of almost everything else using those connectors. I just found one cleaning out an old drawer. AM/FM works but the belt is probably broken.
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 2 жыл бұрын
The polarity issue here isn't the cause and would only affect the capacitors on the power rail. The capacitors used here are known to leak regardless. A lot of devices manufactured during this time frame need a full recap, because they just start to leak due to the chemicals used and the way they are constructed. The sega game gear is another device that has an issue like this.

I'm at a loss here. So I swapped the capacitors (99%sure they're right), but right now I'm getting no sound (as I was before). Now, the ribbon cable leading to the radio I have unplugged (the radio didn't work before but I think I extra broke it. I think I shorted/over currented something in it when I plugged a cable from my computer usb port to the DC in...) because when it's plugged in the motor won't run when I press play (in tape mode). As for the headphone out, with the earphones plugged in, I tested the R, L, and G to the + side of the battery and they are all read just over 2V difference. Is this right? I thought the R and L would be different from the G. Can the jack be bad? I mean it's only 3 connections. Also I hear a tick in the earphones when testing the battery + to the L and R. Another weird thing is if its in radio mode and I plug a cable from the DC in to the usb port, it spins up the motor and I can hear the motor through the earphones. Any ideas?
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 8 жыл бұрын
have you made sure if the capacitors are soldered on with the correct polatity? also some could not be soldered on fully... there shouldn't really be any voltage on the audio output that high.. in a worst case scenario one of the ic's could be broken aswell...
@xxuncexx
@xxuncexx 8 жыл бұрын
HardDiskLover Yeah I made sure they were all correctly oriented and I pressed them down when I soldered them. I'm not sure if this problem existed before as the belt was broken and I couldn't use it.
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 8 жыл бұрын
that doesn't soud too good :( do you have a scope? You could trace all voltages and signals to find the issue like a drop in voltage or so... it could also be that one of the Ic's or something else is broken or the leaked electrolyte has corroded the traces on the board. Getting replacements ic's is still possible but a bit expensive and fixing corrosion issues is very challenging...
@xxuncexx
@xxuncexx 8 жыл бұрын
HardDiskLover There's a variety of things I can think of. I don't think its corroded. Maybe an ic got fried. Maybe pushing down on the capacitors mashed the solder together and is creating a short. I could try re soldering but if that doesn't work then I'm not sure. I'd be nice to have a schematic so then I can trace it better. But I'm not too fond of how the headphone jack works so I'd also have trouble knowing the proper voltages to look for.

Wished you'd shown how you got it apart. I took three screws out of the back and I can't get the back off to see if my belt is broken. Mine is just making the same motor sound as yours did. Anything I'm missing in disassembling this thing? I really don't want to break it.
@somerslats

I agree, it would have been nice to see that. I just got mine off, and found that it helped to use a couple credit cards to gently pry of the back starting at the top of the unit and working down around the perimeter. The bottom was tricky, and I had success using a small screwdriver to gently lift two tabs located in the battery compartment.

A nearly-perfect replacement for the OEM belt (which is much thinner) can be bought on eBay from a Slovakian dealer mihokm (type Sony WM-AF64 belt on the search engine). This belt fits and works much better than the American thick replacement belts.

Your dad had good taste in this Sony WM AF64 player... it too was my 90's favorite too; riding my bike, touring our city daily, and listening to tapes and the radio - good times. Before that, in the 80's, I used a Sanyo M-G10 personal cassette player; played it all through my teen years until I lost it in storage - both good and bad times. I just bought a few used Sanyo's; a M-G30 and an M-G31 - both need some repairs. And I still have my old Sony WM AF64 too; but like yours, I too believe the belts are melted and one or two capacitors are toast. OK, I watched your video on the repair... forget it; I am sure I cannot do it... I removed both screws from the back, but it appears there are clips holding the back plate on tightly. My experience is, I always break a clip. So, how much would you charge me to repair m Sony WM AF64 Mega Bass?
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 6 жыл бұрын
Sorry I can not really offer repairs. I assume you are in USA. I'm in Germany. The shipping cost alone would already be really high +80€ with tracking. I'd recomend you to get a set of spudgers and make sure that all screws that hold the back pannel on are removed. with a bit of patience and a spudger the back plate should come off without breaking any clips. At around 6:32 you can see where the clips are. Or you could ask at a local hackerspace if someone can help you out ;3

Hi, good advice; thanks. I watched your video closely and I believe I can do the job just as you did your; albeit, with some patience. Actually, I thought of buying a soldering kit & tools off of ebay and try the repair myself. It looks like the repair on the Sony WM AF64 is pretty straight forward, and an relatively easy repair - all the parts are on ebay. However, the Sanyo M-G30 & MG31 are a bit more tricky, and the parts seem to be a bit harder to find. Maybe you can do a Sanyo M-G10, M-G30 or M-G31 repair, I believe they were Sony's early 80's top rival from Japan and still worth collecting and repairing. I have both M-G30 and M-G31 now... both are very nice, but both have issue; one has a headphone static/cut-off issue, and both need new belts. Any helpful hints would be greatly appreciated. Again, thanks so much for the reply. Cheers from SoCal

There are a few clips around the sides. I'd recommend to use a spudger tool. Its a bit tricky and requires patience so that the plastic doesn't get damaged. took me around 15min to open the thing. wanted to make sure i'm not gonna break anything on the thin plastic

I managed to open it and changed the belt, but there was another challenge: the tape has no sound, only the radio ... :( Do you have any idea what it might be?
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 6 жыл бұрын
Could be contact issues from the switch or what I'd think bad caps. every walkman behaves a little different when something goes bad but usually its the capacitors. The caps are pretty cheap so swapping them is defintaley worth the effort. If you have Access to an oscilloscope you could probe if there is any signal coming from the tape head and going into the amp

2 Questions! How are you removing the circuit board. And what do you use to clean up the melted rubber? It's everywhere!
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 6 жыл бұрын
The circuit board is held in with a few screws and clips. Its quite a bit of effort to remove so patience is needed. It only comes out of the case with the tape mechanism. if you have the whole assembly removed from the case then you can remove the PCB from the tame mechanism To clean up the rubber I use Isopropanol with some q-tips and paper towels. *Don't use something like acetone because that may dissolve the plastic wheels!*

Are bad capacitors common?
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 5 жыл бұрын
Yes and no. Usually its the first thing to break in a circuit. But these SMD capacitors that were used in the 90's had a bit of an odd chemistry to them wich caused them to leak, wich is what happened in this walkman. Yet I still have hifi equipment thats almost 60 years old and the capacitors are still fine.

Usually you can find belt kits on ebay. If not you could go for a belt bundle. It includes 50 to 60 belts of all different sizes also on ebay and from china. These Bundles cost usually less than 3$ including shipping (I'd recommend a belt bundle. They are a lot cheaper than a kit and you have a ton of spare belts wich you can use to fix even more Tape drives than just one ;) )

Retroreviews Plus, the culprit is possibly either a dirty read head, the amplifier chip may be dead, or it could be a bad capacitor or other similar component. The difficulty of those repairs range from just using some IPA solvent and a cotton swab to having to do possibly TQFP or even BGA chip repairs
@palemacaroon4836

Retroreviews Plus, the amplifier is probably a DIP package of some kind most likely, you will need to definitely do some trouble shooting with a multimeter.

Hello, I just found my dads old walkman (WM-F59/F69) and I just have some questions about the capacitors since they leak and I plan on changing them out (also I'm only somewhat familiar with electornics). I plan on ordering from here: www.mouser.com/Passive-Components/Capacitors/Aluminum-Electrolytic-Capacitors/Aluminum-Electrolytic-Capacitors-SMD/_/N-75hqx Are these the correct type of capacitors? I'm also noticing on the walkman that some capacitors bottleneck at the bottom while some don't. Can I replace them with all the same type (aluminum electrolytic)? Also I notice the capacitors are 3 different diameters and all the same height, what are the correct dimensions? Anything else I'm missing? Thank you for posting and for any help you may provide.
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 8 жыл бұрын
those capacitors should work. measure them with calipers before ordering so you get the correct diameter. If you need some practice with swapping, an old pc Motherboard could help.
@xxuncexx
@xxuncexx 8 жыл бұрын
Cool thanks. One more thing for now, what;s that stuff leaking out of the capacitors and is that bad for you?
@HardDiskLover
@HardDiskLover 8 жыл бұрын
The stuff leaking out of them is electrolyte. I not exactly sure if it is dangerous, but you should watch out to not rub your eyes or for whatever reason stick your finger in your mouth while doing this repair, just so that nothing of that stuff gets inside or in contact with sensitive regions of your body. When you're done replacing or take a break wash your hands thoroughly with soap. And one last thing: if you have issues finding a capacitor with the same Voltage as the one you want to replace you can use one with a higher voltage with no problem. Only *don't* select one with a lower voltage. If you use a lower voltage one it could explode!
@xxuncexx
@xxuncexx 8 жыл бұрын
HardDiskLover Alright, thanks for the advice. Hopefully the capacitors I ordered come as specified and that slight length and height variations don't matter too much. The diameters I'm preeeetty sure are the exact same though.

It depends. Normally capacitors are not the first component to fail. Often there are issues with the power rails or other components. In this case the SMD capacitors used here are known to leak due to the chemistry in them. When troubleshooting you must check the voltages of the device at first, then the individual components
