I think specs wise, a lot of phone cameras are better than the iPhone. They're even better if you know what you're doing. However, when it comes to ease of use and reliability, I'm giving it to the iPhone.

I mean it costs more than the pocket 4k. You might as well just invest in a camera with interchangeable lenses. I mean you could get two used a7s’s for less or 4 used a6300’s for that. It is awesome to see a phone producing these images but I’m not going to drop $1500 on a phone.

@@mrwashur1991 While I agree phones prices are crazy nowadays, I finally took the bite and ordered one. Over the years I went from carrying my DSLR + lens everywhere to seeking the comfort of the smallest possible stuff I could carry since I move a lot. Even microphones, can't bother with big bulky or it might just stay home. Smallest stuff so far I found to my liking were the DJI Pocket with couple accessories and ND filters + my phone + if I need that extra audio quality, Zoom H1n / a lavalier microphone. The more I get from what I can put in my pockets the better !

It is. Xperia 1 III user here, the colors from screen are incredibly accurate, it is now the external display of my DSLR system for its large viewscreen and control.

@@mrwashur1991 Think this as not just a solid mobile camera but also a media player, with expandable memory storage which can replace ok the fly, 3.5mm headphone jack that also supports high def music, I have a habit of listening to music from my phone, in low volume, whenever I do landscape photoshoot to get into the mood and looking for inspiration. Each tool has its unique and distinct function.

Sony phones are always so underrated. I think it's because they make phones for a niche audience and hence, it lacks the mass appeal that brands like Apple and Samsung have. Nonetheless, it's a beautiful phone.

They lack mass appeal because they aren’t willing to do carrier deals. In the US, most people still get their phones through carriers rather than direct from the company.

@@bubbledoubletrouble Well I don't live in the US, so I'm talking from a general perspective. In most other places, people just stick to bigger brands like iPhone or Samsung because they are made and marketed as all-rounders fit for everyone. Sony phones seem to be more for tech nerds

I really wanna get the Sony IV but my trusted carrier doesn't offer it. I also find it a hassle now to buy a phone directly from the company as I have to change my mobile no.

@@bubbledoubletrouble Even if Sony went back to doing carrier deals, the carrier game is rigged to Apple and Samsung. The sales reps on the floor carry either an iPhone or Samsung, so that's what they'll sell to customers. Sony would have to play a major long game with selling incentives and massive marketing campaigns, which may or may not even succeed. I honestly think Sony is doing it right with the niche market strategy. Once Sony builds a strong niche market, then they can use that to open up to the larger consumer base. I have no idea what their strategy is, but I'm guessing that's what they're trying to do. There's no sense in going in cold against Apple and Samsung in the North American carrier game. That's a giant wall to climb.

At this point, if you buy a Sony Xperia, it's really for their camera and the manual settings. Which like you said, makes it really niche. The average Joe isn't going to shoot RAW or LOG stuff and manually post process it, so this phone is just gonna whizz by them like nothing. The auto mode from this phone doesn't perform as well as iPhones, Pixels or Samsungs, so it'll never gain traction on the mainstream market. The average Joe just wants to shoot a photo and instantly upload it

Did you use any ND filters on these videos? I have the Xperia 1 III and I always loved the quality videos and pictures Sony puts out For those struggling with overheating, put your phone on airplane mode while recording video and you'll be golden.

@@taviluci It does get hot, but for me it has not overheated once. I must say I live in North of Scotland so temperatures doesn't get as warm here. Depending on where You live it might affect You differently. When I tested it I did take it out of the case I have on it as well. Just a precaution. Have it since launch date and have not had any issues.

I'm a Xperia fan, because of the camera and Cinema pro app, so I'm bias. But I know there is problems with the niche approach Sony have. The phone will never appeal to the broad mass and therefore, for example, Moment will never make a case-filter solution for a Sony phone. I’m not sure I’m right but I think the difference between Cinema pro and Videography pro is the approach where Cinema Pro have aspect ratio 21:9 and a focus on 180-degree shutter speed. Videography pro is a 16:9 aspect ratio and ISO control of light and shutter speed to be what ever to give the right brightness to the picture. Videography pro also have digital zoom in the interface. I use Cinema pro on my Sony Xperia 5 II and always with a variable ND filter for bright day time shooting. I miss a good tutorial how to post produce the HDR video content in for example Da Vinci Resolve.

which tutorial did you watch? I'm a long time beginner on resolve, but I don't know how to post produce cinema pro clips. I'm using 5 ii so I don't have video pro. It always looks good on my phone and then washed out when I share or transfer. Could you tell me what actually happened and how do I fix this in davinci resolve. Is it hdr problem? I thought I had to color grade so I actually tried messing around before (with my poor color grading skill) but I really messed up the clip

Fantastic device - I have it but I'm lost in the settings. I would love more tips on how to use manual settings. Yes I have an iPhone but I can see the camera the technology on the Sony is incomparable. The shots of a sunset, that I somehow managed to master was stunning. However my shots at the moment are very hit and miss, so I need more guidance in the way of settings. It's a phone I have to keep hold of, especially as I only paid £770 almost new.

Their manual settings are actually pretty similar to their mirrorless cameras. I think you can watch some beginner's guide videos into photography to understand the trifecta (ISO, shutter speed and aperture) and you'll understand how manual settings work on the phone. Of course, phones have limitations because there's a fixed aperture size and can't match an APS-C or full frame in terms of letting in enough light for night photography. Hope this helps!

Iam Not Sure why but i Like the fact that this is more Like a DSLR even tho iam Not good at taking Pictures or Videos. I can see why people look at the camera comparisons between the Xperia 1 mkIV and other phones with really intense post-processing effects and they say that the S22 Ultra or Pixel 6 have better pictures but they still love the output from the Xperia. It's because it is eminently true to life. The Galaxy and Pixel and iPhone have fantastic post-processing effects, but they tend to end up blowing out the contrast just a bit too much and the sharpness can be a bit exaggerated because of it. It lends itself well to Instagram posts and other social media, but if you like old film cameras and how your DSLR shoots images, then the Xperia will be not just up your alley, it will be the alley up which you are. Now I'm just curious how long it'll take for someone to hack the gcam apk to add in the necessary extensions to let you use the Xperia's suite of cameras with the Google software post-processing. It'll have to be based on one of the older versions, so it'll be slightly less sophisticated, since you'll need to rely on compatibility with the SnapDragon image DSP chip instead of Google's latest in-house module, but I suspect that it'll happen at some point. I've used such hacked gcam versions in the past on other phones and found that it seems to work pretty well, assuming your camera is a relatively standard resolution.

Thanks for the info! Did you have any problems with recording audio on external mic while filming? I'm using a rode video micro+sc7 cable and my audio levels are way low than I would like to have at the maximum volume input settings (they are 2 times lower than on internal mic).

This phone isn't released to the public yet so nobody can be complaining about overheating. I have the mark 3, and it definitely gets hot, but I understood that the 8 Gen 1 chip, in the mark 4, runs cooler. I might be wrong, though.

I don't have the phone, but I am guessing that all those focal lengths, meaning you can zoom in an out, achieved optically will need a little bit of lens length and thus a non-slim body. So I am pretty sure this review uses the regular not slim version. The latter may lack the ability to zoom in and out optically (i.e. using a glass lens not by cropping the digital image).

No integrated cooling solution is the only problem, its overheating will stop the camera apps. Or can they just let the camera apps run even overheating? I mean other phone is much more hotter, but no warning sign and still can continue recording/capturing

You can film 21:9 cinematic on the cinema pro app. I was considering buying an anamorphic lens for mine but your only going to end up squeezing the same picture into the smaller 16:9 ratio and stretching it back out to 21:9. Better off getting the 58mm tele lens if any, because it already does super wide and 85+mm zoom in 4k 120fps so you dont need a wide lens. The macro or fisheyes optional

Many KZfaqrs reviewing sony phone: It has so many issue. Camera is lacking behind. Iphone is better. When professional photographer/videographer review and use it in real world: This phone is like dslr camera. They took video n photos that looks unbelievablely good to be taken from a phone.

Try putting the phone in airplane mode temporarily while filming and shooting pictures. It helps

why didnt you talk about heating issue like everyone else ? it's a mayor concern! As it is right now i would not buy this phone since it lacks a good heatzink and overheats alot.
